Penn & Teller: Bull****: Old People - 07/29/10

Showtime, 9:00pm CDT.

According to Penn and Teller, America's seniors are stripped of their dignity thanks to ongoing stereotypes about old people. They investigate the widespread beliefs that old people can't drive, don't have sex, and smell bad.
Wow P&T sound like they're going to be pro old people. Well, since I'm 63 and I'm going to be an old person in about 20 years () I just might like this!

PS: I don't smell bad. At least most of the time.

I wonder if they point out that they are the wealthiest segment of the population.

That's the problem. They have the most money but refuse to spend it.

I'm glad they touched on euthanasia. They could've done a whole show on that topic alone.

I had no idea Maddox was such a loser douchebag. Man what a pathetic creep. He should have said no to participating.

You were expecting more from somebody who gained notoriety from complaining about things on the Internet he doesn't agree with? Sure, at times he's funny, but I hardly check out his site. It's more annoying than useful.

Re: Penn & Teller: Bull****: Old People - 07/29/10

Gosh, what a boring and pointless episode. Respect old people. Ok, I agree with that, but sheesh. That test about how old people smell was nonsense... many old people smell because they start skimping out on the personal hygiene. Not showering for days and wearing unclean clothes is the "old person" smell.

They also kind of didn't mention the issue of old people driving into farmer's markets and killing a bunch of pedestrians. There IS a case to be made that people lose their facilities and coordination. It's not at a universal age, but it is something that needs to be considered for each individual as he/she ages. Showing the one old guy who is still in good shape and drives race cars proves nothing.

Finally, as a previous poster mentioned, yes the issue of choice in regards to the end of life is definitely worthy of an entire episode, instead of just crowbarring it into this silly pointless excuse for a Bullshit! episode. Are they running out of ideas?

That should have been the show, but I guess they didn't feel like they could be lighthearted with it. As it was, that was the only bright spot of the ep.

Its not like that happens that much. Of course, when it does happen, the media run the story like big news.

Re: Penn & Teller: Bull****: Old People - 07/29/10

This was another case where I liked the topic, but thought the execution could be better.

There's certain elements of truth to the elderly stereotypes. I agree with Lamphorn that there's a good case for re-evaluating whether a senior citizen can operate their car safely. As far as smell is concerned, I'm not sure that's an issue of poor hygiene per se. It may have more to do with illnesses and medications that can cause an unpleasant odor.

Regardless of whether they fit the stereotype or not, we ought to give our elders a little more respect and dignity. I was glad that they discussed euthanasia as well. I understood why the one doctor was against it, but it bothered me the way he described it as dying for vanity. I'm sure it's true that no one wants to die looking sickly and deteriorated, but I imagine that those seeking the right to die are more concerned with actual pain and suffering.

IMO this is the weakest ep of the season so far

Re: Penn & Teller: Bull****: Old People - 07/29/10

Probably the weakest episode of BS that I've seen. It seemed like they had to make one more episode and grabbed stuff off the cutting room floor.

And the whole inclusion of Maddox was pointless. It's not like he's some famous anti-old person crusader. He's an "Anti-everything I don't like" crusader. I didn't even realize his page still existed or was getting updated I don't think I've even looked at it in 5 years...

I had totally forgotten about him myself. Went to his page and it's barely been updated in 5 years.
