Danny Elfman's "Batman" Score 2-Disc Edition!

It's finally here! La-La-Land Records is releasing a 2-disc edition of Danny Elfman's 1989 Batman score! Disc One features the film version/mix/edit, and Disc Two features the original album release, supplemented with some outtakes and other bonus tracks...including the Joker's commercial music(!). $29.98, limited to 5000 units. Includes a 20-page booklet with liner notes by Jeff Bond, whose name is familiar to me for having written liner notes for other soundtrack releases. BSX has pulled out quite a lot of scores in the last several months that got me excited, but I think this is the one I'm actually going to purchase. Feel free to buy one of the other 4999 here.

Umm...it's not BSX that released this, it's La-La Land Records.

BATMAN (1989): LIMITED EDITION (2CD-SET) LLLCD 1140
Music by Danny Elfman
Limited Edition of 5000 Units

SHIPPING JULY 27
RETAIL PRICE $29.98

As part of our Expanded Archival Collection, La-La Land Records presents the world premiere release of the film version of Danny Elfman's acclaimed original score to the 1989 Warner Bros. blockbuster BATMAN, starring Jack Nicholson, Michael Keaton and Kim Basinger and directed by Tim Burton. With a running time of 144 minutes, this 2-CD SET, produced by Dan Goldwasser, Neil S. Bulk and MV Gerhard, and remastered by James Nelson, features the previously unreleased film version (mix/edit) of Mr. Elfman's score, as well as a remastered presentation of the 1989 soundtrack album and never-before-released Bonus Tracks. 20 Page CD Booklet features in-depth liner notes by Jeff Bond. Limited Edition of 5000 Units

ABOUT THIS RELEASE: In order to present as much music as possible from Batman in the best possible quality, multiple sources were utilized with the best-quality elements selected for each cue on an individual basis. For disc one and the bonus cues on disc two, three sources were used: Eric Tomlinson's 35mm 4-track mixes, 1/4 inch stereo mixes and a stereo 35mm music only track. The album cues on disc two were sourced from the original digital album master featuring Shawn Murphy's stereo album mix.

La-La Land has really been kicking ass this year with their releases. Hopefully Goldenthal's Batman & Robin isn't too far behind.

There is an Elfman/Burton 14 cd/1 dvd box set coming out sometime this year. Might have to jump on that one.

One of the all-time great movie scores of the past 25 years. I'm still shocked it didn't get an Oscar nom.

Really?! Do you have any other info on this?

I jumped on the expanded Batman minutes after it went on sale. Can't wait for it to arrive!

Someone on Film Score Monthly said they talked to the LaLaLand reps at comic con, and an expanded Batman Returns is coming out later this year.

Hopefully Forever and Batman and Robin will follow.

While this is beyond awesome, I wonder why it's so limited?
5000 copies? I'm sure a title like this was a pretty penny to license out and when you add in the cost of remastering and product production, well that is not much profit I would imagine. 5000 copies at 30 bucks each totals up to 150,000 grand if my math is correct.

Yeah, I saw that mention there as well! It's a good thing MV is really into superhero movies or else I don't think we would be seeing such a steady stream of releases. With that said, I'm most looking forward to their upcoming X-Files release. For me, that's a dream come true.

In the film score world, 5,000 copies is monstrous. Most of the speciality labels products range from 1,200 to 3,000.

Re: Danny Elfman's "Batman" Score 2-Disc Edition!

Thank you for that link cdollaz! I'm hoping I can afford such a huge thing! Also very excited to see "Batman Returns" on the way. It's funny, all my favorite scores of Danny's are all for films in the winter.. "Batman Returns", "Edward Scissorhands", "Nightmare...", and the biggest missing one for me, "Scrooged"!

I would love to have Scrooged! The suite from Music from a Darkened Theater is all I have had to sustain me for all these years.

Re: Danny Elfman's "Batman" Score 2-Disc Edition!

This is a great score I might have to get myself a copy. I really wish I'd have ordered the Batman: The Animated Series release they did a few years ago though. It fetches a pretty hefty price on eBay now ($50 is the lowest I see it at currently) and I really love the music from the series.

Yeah, that's way too high. Hopefully they will put out a regular edition without the bells and whistles.

I'll take Batman Returns. IMO, the best score Elfman ever composed.

Edit: October 19th? When will they be available to order?

All La-La Land releases are made available to order on their official release date at 1PM PST. Originally their releases were available at 12PM PST but they've just changed it to an hour later permanently.

This date for this score is subject to change, since they originally planned on releasing "Alien Resurrection" a few weeks prior to its just-announced date of October 5th, but it was delayed because the discs themselves were still undergoing the manufacturing process.

I placed an order for the Batman soundtrack, along with The Outer Limits and Lost in Space soundtracks. The box set is sharp but way too pricey.

Re: Danny Elfman's "Batman" Score 2-Disc Edition!

So, how's the remastering sound on these? Is it noticeably better than the original release? (Batman for example) I have the original releases of Batman, Returns, A:R, and Terminator 2 (new version out Oct 5th) and am debating whether to get any of the newer versions. I still listen to soundtracks but $20-$30 is a lot for essentially one disc of new material.

Edit: Found a decent review site, sounds like I'll pass on this one.
