The Merry Gentleman (Keaton, 2008)
I am surprised there wasn't a thread on this one already.
Synopsis:
A woman who leaves an abusive relationship to begin a new life in a new city, where she forms an unlikely and ironic relationship with a suicidal hit man (unbeknownst to her). Enter a worn, alcoholic detective to form the third party in a very unusual triangle as this story begins to unfold.
My mini-Review:
It is dour, but sweet, subtle and not wholly original, but this was Keaton's directorial debut and while it got mixed reviews I remember hearing good things, i think, on At the Movies and always meant to check it out.
Finally, rented the Blu-ray. Very affecting. Keaton was real good and while I usually don't like Kelly MacDonald, i thought she was sublime. Always liked Bobby Cannavale, but thought he was a little off here (but that could be the character he was playing).
Some problems, thought the ending should have went a drastically different way and that last shot seemed to be Keaton being arty for its sake and didn't work at all, very The Third Man influenced and didn't belong.
But on a whole very good movie.
Loved this line:
