Under the Touchtone and Hollywood Pictures umbrella, Disney has a ton of movies sitting on a shelf that should be released on Blu-Ray. What is taking so long???

Most of the titles you listed probably wouldn't break even, let alone be a profitable use of resources best used on GOOD MOVIES...

Fantasia is on the way and Dumbo can be imported. My only other truly essential Disney (not counting Pixar) is Bambi, so I'm pretty much covered.

Each studio's different, but Disney's especially stingy when it comes to their catalog titles, best bet is maybe next yr for some. I guess the only one left I'm really wanting is Ransom. (next yr's it's 15th anniversary so maybe...) Looks like Disney's about to finalize buying the Miramax library, so hopefully we start getting some of those next yr.

These. FWIW, Dick Tracy looks pretty fantastic on DVD in anamorphic widescreen with a DTS soundtrack. Still I'd buy a Blu-ray edition in a heartbeat - there are a lot of fantastic aspects about this film that an HD treatment would seriously enhance. It is a shame it didn't do better in theaters.

As it is, most of the titles you mentioned were only released on DVD as "budget" titles in the first place. You should be happy we have them at all IMHO.

There is the good answer and the bad answer.

The good answer is they are trying to make the titles look as best as possible.

The bad news is catalog titles are selling poorly on Blu-ray (and DVD) and it just does not make sense to invest a ton of money in titles and not make anything off of them (return of investment). It's why Disney has released a whole 12 titles this year on Blu-ray. Plus you have Disney trying to unload Mirimax...

Considering that Disney just released Armageddon and Tombstone, a lot of their catalog stuff is just too far below the radar.

I'd have to agree with that statement based on that particular list. I'm hoping for a Tron blu-ray when Tron Legacy comes out - there is an HD transfer (saw it on HDNet this spring) but it was nothing to write home about.

I personally think that Disney couldn't care less about any of their live action films, and it pisses me off. They have so many good films that they refuse to release on dvd so I know they won't do a blu ray.

A double-feature disc of Encino Man and Son In Law might sell decently if it was priced low enough. I'd buy a few of the listed titles just because they were never issued in 16x9 on DVD- I have Evita on laserdisc and never bothered getting the DVD since it isn't 16x9. BTW did anybody buy The Waterboy on Blu-Ray with its $39.99 list price???

Not to derail the thread, but if catalog titles don't sell, just what criteria did Universal use to decide what to release on HD-DVD? I have every title they put out on that format, and a few are just baffling, like Mobsters?? I worked at a theater when that was out and it wasn't exactly a big hit, and it's not like it's become a classic since then either. I was glad they put out The War as it's a personal favorite but that also did horribly theatrically and I don't think too many people remember it. Seems like these 2 HD-DVDs have the most unsold copies out there- Ebay sellers can't even get rid of them for a buck.

It is quite clear we will not be getting many catalog Blu-rays out of Disney. They are now releasing less titles than any other major studio on Blu-ray. I have given up hope that a majority of their excellent live-action catalog will ever see U.S. release, including some semi-major movies.

I guess my hopes for An American Werewolf in Paris on Blu-Ray are going to be dashed forever I have alot of the Buena Vista titles I want on DVD and to be honest I barely watch them. I would upgrade some to BR but most I wouldn't. I am more interested in Disney Animation than anything else from The House of Mouse

Oh, YES!!! I love this movie. And it would look GREAT on BD (if they give it the proper treatment).

I hope that Criterion can get some of the Miramax titles like the Three Colors trilogy and The English Patient.

The Three Color Trilogy (hopefully) will look spectacular on BD. I can't wait.
And hopefully "The English Patient" will get a better treatment than the
Canadian release. One of the top 5 worst transfers I've ever seen.

What about Cool Runnings which is probably getting renewed interest because of the return of the Jamaican team at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics?

The DVD came out in 1999 during the birth of DVDs.

I thought Mill creek had a bunch of these titles for an eventual release. I would love to see Cool Runnings on blu, along with Encino Man, Son in Law, and Ernest Saves Christmas

Haven't seen any new Buena Vista titles from Mill Creek in a while. Though after buying "Camp Nowhere" and finding that they messed up the sound (it's entirely in mono!), I'm not sure if I can trust them enough to buy any more of their releases.

I think Mill Creek has pulled back from releasing those licensed movies on Blu-ray. They seem to have lost interest or sales were disappointing.
