Post your favorite "unique" movies.
may not be the obvious choice (insert The Matrix here), but i remember reading that Cast Away was very unique for a blockbuster because of the lack of music until almost 1h. 40m in and everytime i watch this movie i am amazed at the lack and then love when it does come on.
the movie is unique in other ways as well, but i am sure has been done in some way in the past (Hanks weight lost in between shooting) with the isolated stranded on an island theme.
i didn't think it was the great movie i do now when i first saw it, but i was just entranced last night when it hit cable and i just sat glued even though i've seen it half a dozen times. there are just so many iconic scenes that i truly love.

Re: Post your favorite "unique" movies.
First thing to come to mind is:
At that time the least dialogue in a major motion picture. Not sure if that's still true. I remember seeing Sydney Pollack discussing how they very nearly didn't get the movie made because no one would fund a movie with so little dialogue, asking 'what the hell kind of movie is this? There's no talking.'
Great, great film.

HArold & Maude
Harold Chasen is a 19-year-old boy obsessed with death. He regularly simulates elaborate suicides, attends funerals, and drives a hearse. Maude is a 79-year-old woman who shares Harold's hobby of attending funerals for fun. He is entranced by her quirky outlook on life, which is bright and excessively carefree in contrast with his own morbidity.

The Matrix really wasn't all that unique, felt like a mash up of Terminator and Ghost in the Shell with some Dark City for good measure.
I dunno what I'd actually consider unique, but these guys kind of stood out:
Requiem for a Dream
Titus (Julie Taymor)
Dark City (sci-fi noir)
Memento (simultaneous forward and reverse storytelling)
Being John Malkovich

A Bollywood kung fu movie. What could be more unique?

Anyway, thanks for saying that we could pick more than one film.
Great attempt at trying to make this look like a "One take only" film.
Where bad filmmaking, bad acting, and an odd storyline becomes a complete artform onto itself.

i think The Matrix was very unique for its time. spawned much discussion and documentaries on the concepts in the film and coined multiple new techniques in film making ("bullet time" for one).

Bullet time was used in a Gap commercial before it showed up in The Matrix.

"She combed her hair but once a year
Ristle-te, rostle-te, now, now, now
With every stroke she shed a tear...
He walked her home by the light of the moon...
She swept up her floor but once a year
Ristle-te, rostle-te, now, now, now"

'Nothing' (2004)
'Tetsuo: The Iron Man'
I can't post pics of the film cause they are 'adult' in nature but there 's a puppet film on the Marquis de Sade that's an utter trip.
