Last season was a real step up from the abysmal season 4. Hopefully that trend continues.

Four out of four stars from USAToday. Some minor spoilers contained therein, but man this is sounding GREAT...

Whew. That was a great opener and some of those scenes will leave you cold.
Lighting a cigarette with a church candle...bad ass.

This show used to have a good 50/50 balance of comedy to drama, now it's about 80/20 stacked in favor of drama, and it's getting tedious.

Agreed. Lots about this episode that just seemed off to me. I was starting to tank on it last season and this isn't a good start for me. Regardless I'm in till the end, but I hope I can enjoy it more as it goes on.

I knew about the final season being next year, but I had no idea until yesterday that they actually filmed it all at once and are done.

Me too, but I'm really glad they're no longer both fawning all over him. THAT got ultra-tedious for me. Now it actually seems where it should be: Lots of people just can't stand Tommy, and he's reaping what he's sewn. I'm good with that.

They did the same with the fire at Shiela's beach house. They use the cliffhanger plot device to keep you thinking about the show during the hiatus, and then don't address directly and immediately it in the new season episode. A pet peeve with me...

I really hope this episode was all about Tommy walking around in some sort of bizarre dreamlike state, due to scenes like Mick overacting badly while driving directly into traffic, Sheila suddenly turning up at the firehouse (how did she know he was even there?), Tommy's family being way too nonchalant about drinking, and Teddy all of a sudden showing up at the bar--not to mention the fact that nobody seems to be concerned that he shot Tommy with the purpose of murdering him, and not to mention the other fact that the bar is wildly popular because it's apparently the only bar where a man was shot.
Because if it's not...man, that is some hideously bad writing.
