A Greek film that won the Un Certain Regard award at 2009 Cannes as well as a number of other 2009/2010 festival awards. It looks like it may soon be getting a U.S. release outside of festivals. The trailer is so deliciously odd I might have to check it out.

The movie is fair. The acting is excellent. It's NC-17, but sort of tame. The movie is definitely entertaining though. There's one actress in this film which is pretty amazing. You'll know the one when you see it....

i felt it was like a very less-dialogue based version of a Todd Solondz film, but more surreal. i liked it quite a bit, though i'm unsure exactly of its message altogether.

a combination of the two. Besides the wacky scenarios, there's some simulated sex (softcore) scenes and there is a shot of someone watching a blowjob porno on the tv (hardcore).

I saw this tonight and I thought it was excellent. This is easily one of the best films I've seen in a while. It's like a David Lynch film and a Todd Solondz film made love and the product of their lovemaking is Dogtooth.

The film is very strange but not really all that hard to follow once you figure out what's going on. The acting is really great and the characters have a very real feeling to them which makes things even more frightening. There is almost no music in the film which adds to the overall eeriness of it. I loved, loved, loved the visuals in the film. It's shot exceptionally well. The film just has a very disturbing feel to it without even taking into account what it's about. It's also very funny. I found myself laughing more than I thought I would.

One of the scariest things about the film is that it doesn't really feel all that removed from reality. Just about everything in the film seems highly plausible in the right circumstances.

I highly recommend Dogtooth to anyone who loves weird-fucked up films. I hate this saying but it's not really for the faint of heart. I found myself cringing on multiple occasions.

Dogtooth received two "See It" recommendations from the At the Movies guys this week, although A.O. Scott's "See It" seemed to be borderline.

Agustí ('In A Glass Cage') Villaronga's films also come to mind. I thought the dance scene recalled 'Napolean Dynamite' to a tee - I was cracking up. If this wins best Foreign Film I'll eat my hat ( ). It's not a bad film, but I'd expect alot of the Academy members who have to watch this to cast their votes might be completely revulsed by this film.

The Academy is notoriously prohibitive of NC-17 ratings when it comes to winning major award categories. Does that apply to Best Foreign Film?

Yes. Typically, foreign film is given to a more "traditional" picture - although that is not to say that the "traditional" film is inferior or bad (sometimes the case is that it's just as good or even better; subjective of course) - in the past decade the award has gone to the likes of The Barbarian Invasions over Evil, The Sea Inside over Downfall, The Lives of Others over Pan's Labyrinth, Departures over Waltz with Bashir, The Secret in Their Eyes over White Ribbon for example.

I think this year will be another one of those cases.

Dogtooth is an amazing film that is hilariously eerie. I wouldn't mind it winning but it's content hinders it for this award.

I streamed this from Netflix early on for the Academy Awards Challenge and wasn't terribly impressed. I get the commentary on authority figures controlling us through education and monitoring our communication with the outside world, etc. (a timely enough message, what with all that has taken place in Egypt), and I dig all that. Where the film lost me, though, was the actual execution. I felt it largely meandered from point to point without ever really establishing that it was going anywhere, until the last say, 10-15 minutes. The pace wasn't the issue; I don't mind films that take their time.

Also, I will say that while this may not win Best Foreign Language Film, it should definitely win Most Insidious Use of a Sinatra Recording. Ever.

I totally agree with all that has been posted here so far. I wasn't as impressed as some were, but I did like the film. I thought the eldest girl had only watched two films, but her dance looked like she was doing the audition scene from Flashdance. The ending is definitely left open to interpretation.
