Movie Cells
1st yes I will be selling some of my original movies cells but this is not what this post is about.
Years ago I used to put the movies together for movie theaters. The reels I got were all new most of the time. The new ones when I took them a part I would keep 6 cells. 3 from the front, 3 from the back and trash the tape cell or give it away. They where ok with this.
Right now I am looking at Citizen Kane cells from at the time was only 5 original prints. 1 is the warehouse, the other is him in his room with big fireplace, the 3rd is "Rosebud" burning. Those are and never will be forsale. Yes I can post pictures if anyone wants to see one.
This site is full of movie collectors of one kind or another. I am wondering if anyone else owns any and of what movie. I have over 200 movies cells (3 cells front and back).
If this is in the wrong place sorry I was not sure where to put it. No this is not a for sale ad.
*Front & back means the front part of the reel where I put them together and took them apart if there was 4 reels I have 9 sets of them.

Re: Movie Cells
Ya, its not why I took the job. I started doing it for the free walking anytime and get anything and have dates with me for free. Then one night I put a reel upside down. They came over to my house I fix it. This lead to me watching each movie I put together on Thursday nights all by myself. They where having a Midnight showing of Starwars 1 (Have cells on that one) I was able to watch it 3 times before hand. 1st time by myself. It was a fun job. Oh I was able to order movies posters on their dime (the 2 sided shadow box kind). Still have some left (ex took about 100 or so of them).

Re: Movie Cells
When I worked at a small vfx facility as an apprentice editor, there was a woman who came in to use our kem. She was in the process of restoring 70mm print of Disney's Sleeping Beauty and asked me if I wanted a frame. So I got one of Maleficent, but not for me, for a friend.

I'm sure the theaters that got the prints after you were happy to have 6 frames (NOT 'cells') missing from each reel.

/\ They wouldn't notice, especially when you consider that they would be missing 1/12th of a second at every reel change (1 frame at the head, 1 frame at the tail).

Back in the 90s I got some free cells of Star Trek Insurrection from a guy on an auction site called Haggle Online, I think he was testing the waters to see if he could make a business out of it.

Re: Movie Cells
If they were actual cell paintings used in animation, they're cells.
If they're 8X10 pictures showing scenes from a movie, they're stills.
If what you're holding in your hand was cut and removed from an actual 35mm or 70mm film print, it's a frame.
Any questions?

A few years ago at Comic-Con they had a reel from the movie "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes." For $1 you got one foot of footage. I gave the nice girl $2 and she even made sure my 2 sections had the attacking tomato in them.

Re: Movie Cells
Note to OP: It's called the "head" and "tail" of the reel.
I have a matching set of projector "A", "B", "C" of How the West Was Won from its 2002 restoration....somewhere. About 7 frames each. I wonder what I did with it.
