Weekend Box Office (6/4-6/6): Another mediogre weekend
1. Shrek Forever After 3D (DWA/Par) Week 3 [4,386 Theaters]

6. Marmaduke (Fox) NEW [3,213]
Friday $3.5M, Estimated Weekend $11M
7. Iron Man 2 (Marvel/Paramount) Week 5 [3,007]

8. Splice (Dark Castle/WB) NEW [2,450]
Friday $2.5M, Estimated Weekend $7M
9. Robin Hood (Universal) Week 4 [2,599]
Friday $1.6M, Estimated Weekend $4.5M, Estimated Cume $94.6M
10. Letters To Juliet (Summit) Week 4 [1,962]

****************************************
No surprises here... I didn't think any of the 4 new releases had a shot at cracking $20m.
IM2 might limp up next to IM1, but it's not likely to pass it.
Too bad Splice bombed. Whether it's good or not, an original horror film failing only tells studios that people would rather pay for remade properties.

I wish I understood why Greek's marketing didn't work. The movie is riotously funny at times, and I wish the trailers and TV spots had been more effective.

I don't think it sold the importance of story so much as it just featured scenes of hilarity. I'll only compare it to The Hangover because that was another comedy that was sold without any real leading actors, but the story of trying to recall a drunken weekend in Vegas (obviously) appeals to lots of people. Greek was sold on the hijinks of Brand and Hill, neither of whom can open a movie on their name alone.

^Not to mention there are lots of people out there who can't stand either Jonah Hill or Russell Brand. Personally, I am indifferent to Brand but would see anything with Hill in it.

I'm shocked that Killers is going to do as well as it did. I thought for sure it would bomb. I'm thinking that A-Team and Karate Kid should do well next weekend before Toy Story 3 hits, maybe in the $40 to $50 million range at least for A-Team and the $30 range for Kid. I'm thinking that 3 is going to do at least $80 million or more that weekend.

It's another mediocre weekend as nothing but crap is currently sitting in theaters, that's why.
I took my girlfriend to see Get Him to the Greek last night, despite myself seeing it weeks ago at the premiere. Paid $22 and sat through a presentation that sounded like shit because speakers were blown. Went to complain to the manager on duty and he said there was nothing he could do. Obviously, you should inform the customer that there's a dead speaker or two in the auditorium they're about to watch the movie in before they shell out $22. I would've driven as fast as I can to the next possible theater showing the film if I would've known that.
GAME CHANGER: The owner of the theater is a client of ours at work. Someone (ahem, me) might be making a phone call on Monday.

Boo! Shrek can go jump off a cliff and die. Maybe Get Him To The Greek will have good word of mouth.

Trivial though it is, Cinemascore is a pretty decent scale of what joe public thought about a movie, with a B it doesn't seem Greek was particularly well liked. But we'll see.

I think Shrek 4 can probably get to $250 mil, but not more. Iron Man 2 is now only $19 mil ahead of the original at the same release point. I agree that it'll just eek out more than the first one, maybe $320 mil. Still a great take, but the expectations were obviously higher.
I think Robin Hood can maybe get to $110 mil, but it'll be close. And Greek's opening is a little soft. I expected it to earn over $20 mil based on the very positive reviews. Universal can't seem to catch a break. But it could have some legs. Grown Ups and Knight & Day don't open until June 25, so it'll have a bit of time to pull in more of the comedy crowd.
I do hope The A-Team gives a much needed boost next weekend. I think it has a chance to open at $50 mil or more. It looks like a fun action adventure, which we are sorely lacking so far this Summer, aside from IM2.

I am planning on seeing A Team next weekend. It looks like it could be fun. Splice should have been released after the summer movie season. It probably could have done better in late August or September.

I think it'll do well. Fans of the show will be there, but I also think the recent success from Neeson and Cooper with Taken and Hangover will help move a few more tickets. Obviously neither are A-list openers, but Cooper is nearing breakout status, if he's not already.

Beacuse it was marketed as another Apatow-like flick, and (most) moviegoers HATED "Funny People". If they were smarter, ads would have focused on its similarities to "The Hangover".

I agree. The box office is as lame as the movies (so far). Only 2 I've seen are Iron Man 2 & Robin Hood & even Robin Hood was only fair. Hopefully A Team, Toy Story 3 & Knight & Day will make June a good month after a lame first weekend.
