The Mentalist -- Season Finale -- "Red Sky in the Morning" -- 05/20/10
Synopsis:
Spoiler:
WRITTEN BY: Executive Producer/Creator Bruno Heller
DIRECTED BY: Chris Long
So how many of you are still following this? I haven't done a thread for this show in months since regular procedurals like this don't generate much interest, but they are bringing back the Red John storyline and it's the Finale so why not?
Good to see the finale was penned by Heller.

I watch the show every week, and wondered why there was never a thread for it. I don't enjoy it as much as I used to, as Jane's routine can get a bit dry, but I still think it is a good show and am glad it will come back for another season.
The first season ended with a tense Red John episode, but didn't really have a cliffhanger. I hope they do the same this year.

My husband and I both enjoy this show and are glad it is getting a 3rd season. I have to admit I am a bit puzzled by who Red John could be since my theory was it was gong to turn out to be someone on the force, the police chief was my guess, but since they did away with him at some point this season (I must have missed the episode) and brought in that lady chief, I am at a loss again...

I watch the show weekly, sort of. They seem to take a lot of 2-3 week breaks and then come back with a spurt of 5 episodes, then another break. So, I watch it whenever its on. The Red John plot has, for the most part, been ignored this season. More stand alone episodes than the first season. Which I am actually fine with, but hopefully it's bigger factor next season. Looking forward to the finale, but honestly it would have been better if they would have spent the two episodes leading up to the finale on Red John also.

^^ yeah Greg Itzen was only a recurring character on this show and left to join 24 for it's final episodes. He could be back in some capacity, but I don't think as the boss since they hired that new lady as his replacement.

Really good episode. The ending with Red John was great, and I have a good idea of who Red John is now.

I don't. When "he" first spoke, I thought it kind of sounded like Simon Baker's Jane voice, only disguised. It was also androgynous. I think were are supposed to be suspicious of the psychic lady who disappeared, but I'm not so sure about it being her.

I watch this show casually, like most other procedurals. I'm not a big fan of the reoccurring villain thing on these types of shows and this one is no exception. It's always a master criminal, one step ahead of the usually infallible protagonists, taunting them, blah blah blah.
Still, as an individual episode this one wasn't bad. I really like the psychic chick. In fact I would have liked, and I think this ep would have worked better, if they had given Jane and her an episode or two more to build their relationship.

I got the feeling Red John was a woman this week, but who knows. I also thought maybe it was the psychic lady, but how did she get to Nevada to kill when they had her under guard? Unless she did it before they put her under guard.
Was Brett Partridge the guy who interrupted Jane when he was looking around Miley's room and told him to hurry up so his men could get in?

For all those who think it is a woman, remember how easily he righted Jane's chair, with Jane strapped to it.
By the way, the poem he recited is of course "The Tyger", by William Blake. It asks how a loving God could create such a perfect killing machine, and how reason gives way to the reality of this wonderful and terrible creature.

I have a feeling we may not find out who Red John is until the series finale. He is basically Jane's motivation for helping out the police (if I am remembering correctly), so having Red John caught (or killed because Jane wants to exact revenge) would take that angle away. I actually like the way they have it as a background storyline with the majority of the show being stand alone episodes...

This comment is about the series in general: Does anybody else think the captions of what city they are in to be unnecessary? This city, that city, doesn't really matter. And sometimes they're too obvious. For example, if in one scene Lisbon says "Go check out that woman's house." Then in the next scene the caption says "Woman's residence."

No, that crime scene investigator guy is too much of a dumb jackass to be Red John. If it's someone we've seen, it would be someone who acts more friendly, or at least doesn't so obviously appear to be a cocky douche.

The Mentalist remains one of my favorite shows. All the characters I find well written and acted within the limits of time they are given. Of course "Jane" raises the show a few more notches.
