No offense but your thread title is pretty lame since most thought Robin Hood would not even make 30 mill this weekend. So in a sense it is "robin" the box office taking in more than most thought if the estimate of 40 million holds up.

Ouch. That's a huge drop for Iron Man 2, and Shrek only a week away will knock it down even more.

Iron Man 2's weekend drop looks to be around 58%. That's pretty normal nowadays, especially with the huge opening it had, and with Robin Hood stealing some of the thunder. Pirates 2's 2nd weekend drop was 54%, and it still went on to gross over $420 million. I think IM2 will be fine.

Robin Hood actually appears to be doing better than expected. I thought they were predicting around $30 million. And according to Deadline Hollywood, it beat out IM2 overseas with $75.7 million. I think it'll continue to play strong in foreign markets.

What's with the estimated cummulative total after Robin Hood? Are these figures from Biff's Sports Almanac?

Considering it cost $225m to make... I'd say an opening of $40 is low, and that's not taking into account the fact that Nikki's numbers are often overblown.

Plus, I liked how it sounded.

I told my boss I thought Iron Man would keep the top spot this weekend and he said I was crazy. But who's laughing now?!?

I haven't seen Robin Hood, but how in the hell did it cost $225m to make? It has one A-list actor and seemingly no major CGI.

Where do these cost figures come from anyway?

Two A-list actors actually. You forgot Cate Blanchett.

Yeah, that'll be the key. Hoping it plays similarly to Troy, low 100's domestic but than huge overseas. Hopefully that's enough to move forward a lower budgeted sequel.

Maybe it came from a better accent coach than Kevin Costner had.

Re: Weekend Box Office (5/14-5/16) Hood not exactly Robin the box office

I saw Robin Hood yesterday and it was pack with older people whom didn't care to see the "comic book movie next door" as one woman pointed out as we were walking in. I think next week, after seeing both Hood and Iron Man 2, Hood is going to take a nosedive because there is no replay value in my mind, and everyone whom really wanted to see it saw it this weekend. And for the next couple of weeks nothing jumps out at me to run and see, even though I know both Shrek and Prince of Persia are going to open big at the box office. I may go again and see Iron Man 2 since it won't be packed when I saw it last weekend.

I believe it was filmed in England. I think that's much of the cost, even though they got a ton of tax incentives for filming there. I heard the "true" cost was more like $180 million if you factor in the tax incentives they got for filming there.

Older crowds generally don't flock out the first week the way comic fans do, so I would guess it won't dive next week. I could see this opening modestly, but having some legs.

I've gotta wonder what is particularly expensive about filming in this country? A few plane tickets over and then accommodation: not really into the $100million ballpark.

How did they behave? Old fogies are pretty noisy, in my experiences.

The British pound is about 1.5 times stronger than the US dollar for one, and was even stronger than that when Robin Hood was filmed there.

I haven't seen one box-office analyst who predicted this movie would do more than 130-140M in it's entire run. That said, 40M is pretty damn great. We're not talking about how much it's going to lose in the end. And after it's worldwide take, DVD sales, cable, etc, it will make some money back for the studio. Not a lot, but some.

They were good and better than when I saw Nightmare on Elm. Street two weeks ago where just about every teenager had something to say about what was going on in the film. I saw Eyes Wide Shut the first weekend it was out with an older crowd and everyone was very respectful, then went back a couple days latter and a there were some mid 20 somethings that talked through the whole movie.
I don't see Robin Hood lasting at the box office because word is getting around that it's not the movie it could have been. I work with a guy that was really looking forward to it, and now has said he will wait for the blu ray. My parents saw Iron Man 2 today, said it was packed and that it was a mixed crowd of teens and people their age seeing it and having fun. I thought for sure that Iron Man would be the biggest hit of the summer, but more and more I wonder if it's going to be Toy Story 3 that is going to be the biggie.

Yeah but that doesnt make things 50% more expensive. I seriously doubt that estimated budget.

as someone pointed above, the pound to dollar conversion was quite a bit more when this was filmed. it probably was like spending $2 US for every $1 British pound.

no different than something like Lost filmed on Hawaii. stuff is just inherently more expensive when you are on a island like that.

Re: Weekend Box Office (5/14-5/16) Hood not exactly Robin the box office

That only holds true if things are priced at the same numbers but under a different currency. There's already a film industry here with facilities and technicians so the comparison to Hawaii where many things would have to be shipped in simply isn't there. I'd guess that filming here might be slightly more expensive, but it certainly isn't a location shoot. The Bond films certainly haven't been that expensive to shoot here - the bulk of their budget seems to have gone on special effects, saleries and locations such as the Caribbean.
