Sad that it didn't work out (I liked the premise), but I'd much rather have them cancel a project if the story simply doesn't work than rush out a mediocre product just because. I'm sure it wasn't something they decided upon willy nilly, but date rape

Wow. Never heard of this 'til now. Sounded promising albeit risqué for Disney/Pixar.

Maybe it's because, based on the plot setup, I already know EXACTLY how that movie will end. Sounds sitcom-y and formulaic to me.

I really hope this doesn't mark a change in Pixar's philosophy or anything.
To date they've released one sequel and it was arguably better than the orginal--Toy Story 2. Now, like Blu Man said, 2 more sequels are coming out very soon and they cancelled a new, seemingly promising idea.
Pixar is one of the few companies out there that consistently releases good and creative movies. 2 sequels, both to movies that are fairly down on my personal list of Pixar movies, isn't what I was hoping for from Pixar.

I want to see Pixar do something like 300 or SIN CITY. Or GHOST IN THE SHELL.
Just a thought.

You should know the ending of any traditional Hollywood film after the first couple of scenes... Even the well liked ones such as Back to the Future. It's all about how the film gets you there.

Put simply, you cannot predict, from watching the first Act (from credits to arrival in 1955) that the ending will involve Marty having to successfully initiate a romance between his parents to preserve his own future existance. Even with all their dinner table talk about the dance.

I don't disagree with what you've said in a general sense, but BTTF is a bad example. It isn't until the diner scene where Marty sees his young dad that the audience really gets the "hook" of the film, that he's going to encounter young versions of everyone he knows and be forced to deal with his parents adolescent problems. I've even heard Zemekis interviewed where he's said that peview audiences (who hadn't been primed w/ any commercials about the film) were lost until that scene. As tight as BTTF's script is, it has a lot of seemingly inessential set up that pays off big in the second act.

There's so much unnecessary exposition and foreshadowing going on in the first 20 minutes ("THIRTY YEARS AGO LIGHTNING STRUCK OUR CLOCKTOWER!!!...", the dinner table story of how Mom met Dad) that, unless you missed the First Act entirely or are one of the intellectually-deficient slobs for whom Zemeckis films his trailers (Not a single plot development or twist untouched!), it's really easy to spot where the film is going.
Doesn't make it any less entertaining though. The sequels, on the other hand...
