Who would have thought the San Diego Padres would have the NL's best record at Mother's Day? Their solid play is going to make it tough on the GM, who I would think was prepared to entertain offers for Gonzalez, Bell, etc by this summer. It will be interesting to see if they can keep it up.

What the hell is Starlin Castro's problem? After Friday I was ready to call him the greatest player of all-time since Jason Heyward, then he turned in two mediocre games. If he doesn't pull his head out soon, I'm off his bandwagon for good.

The bullpen has blown 3 straight games for Tim Lincecum. We'll remember these games when it comes time for Cy Young voting again this year. With Halladay in the NL, I don't see Lincecum pulling out the award again this year if he ends up with a modest victory total.

Can you really blame him? I mean they started the season with Milton Bradley as their clean up hitter. It's not like he has much to work with.

So where will Cliff Lee be pitching after the trade deadline?

davidh777
05-09-10, 04:04 PM
No, I don't think anyone in Marinerland thinks of Cockrell as anything other than a scapegoat, but this is always the first move. It bugs JackZ a little time as the players "adjust" to the new philosophies. If things don't turn around soon, though, then yeah, the Mariners become sellers instead of buyers.

Normally I'd be rooting for the no hitter but Braden is such a whiny bitch. It'll be cool to see anyway. That's why I love baseball, anyone can throw a perfect game at anytime. My dad and I just stopped cold in the middle of dinner to see if this guy can pull it off.

Yeah I realized that ESPN would be showing it right after my last post. It's still different. MLB network showed the post game interview and they're still talking about it. Also, if something like MNF was on ESPN, I doubt they would have cut to the game. It just so happened that Sportscenter was on.

It didn't take the A's announcers long to bring up the Yankees.

Such a historic moment in baseball history (I believe that was only the 19th Perfect Game) and nobody was there to see it today. I think this is a sad state of affairs of certain markets in baseball that you have a Sunday Afternoon game on Mothers day against the best team in Baseball, and a small market team like the A's gets..... 12,000????

That's small market baseball. You can bet that 100x that attendance that will say they were there. I still feel fortunate to have seen a no-hitter (Wilson Alvarez) in my hundreds of games at Memorial Stadium/Camden Yards in the 1990s. Still have my press box scorecard from that one.

Hadn't even turned on the tv yet and see the news about the perfect game here. My first reaction is the irony/shock that it was against the high-flying Rays, who also fell victim to Mark Buehrle last season.

And to add to this note, Braden had given up 6 runs in 4 innings against the Rays late last month.

As much as I love A-rod bashing, he'll probably go 3 for 3 with 2 homeruns and 5 rbi's tonight so... Nice job by Braden, wish the many high priced Sox pitchers could pitch half that well against the Rays.

Don't know how Terry Crowley keeps his hitting coach job with the Orioles. Probably because the owner is too cheap to pay another guy and still pay the fired guy. One reason why they will make the basement their home for a long time. The Detroit Lions have a better chance of winning a play-off game than the Orioles do of having a winning season. It will be interesting to see how many empty seats there will be for the Seattle series.

AJ Burnett (as a Yankee) and Fenway park just don't seem to mix... 6 runs in the first 3 innings. The nice thing is the Yankees have only 3 games left in Fenway this year after tonight.

I do like the plan to let Ortiz get a hit so the Red Sox continue to hold out hope he'll turn it around. Might want to let him get a couple on a night like tonight... it also seems to make Joe Morgan happy who's convinced it's a mental thing.

Even without an opinion on the A-Rod/Braden spat, Rodriguez comes off looking a little foolish for his recent line about Braden having enjoyed his 15 minutes of fame.

I know that when anything happens the first thought is to rip on A-Rod but let's put it all in perspective here. A-Rod would have never said what he said if Braden wasn't such a bitch about an "unwritten rule" that no body has heard of. It sucks for Braden more than anyone. If he wasn't such a whiner then no one would be talking about A-Rod (who, if you didn't notice, doesn't play for either the Rays or A's).

But yeah, A-Rod's a dick. Everyone knows it. But he's not the first great player to also be an asshole. Pedro Martinez reveled in it.

AJ Burnett just shouldn't pitch at Fenway anymore. Not only does he suck in Boston but I'm afraid it'll mess with his long term rhythm. I don't know if he can go back out in 5 days being the dominant Burnett that we've been seeing so far this season.

Sucks to lose this one, but they got the series wrapped up so no big deal.

I love MLB Network. Got to watch a little of his perfect game around the 6th b/c of the cut in. Brilliant coverage by MLB.

What's funny is that if Burnett didn't suck tonight then that perfect game would have put the Yankees in first place. Take that A-Rod!

It's brutal... what was more brutal was they had Bard warming up just in case in the 8th when Delcarmen was struggling a bit and was a swing away from turning a 9-2 game into a save situation. Once they got by that... 6 run lead.... bring Wake in...

9-2 game in the 8th they can't bring Wake in? There is that little trust? Del Carmen had worked the 2 of the last 4 games so it's not like he needed to get the work in. This is a team that brought an OF the previous night so they wouldn't have to use the bullpen.

The guy deserves better - he almost certainly won't complain, but he's being treated like dirt.

I've never played baseball, but have played a bunch of softball (pitcher), and I'd deck anyone if they tried to walk over my mound.

No, sir. It was one of those "unwritten rules". And I'm usually the first to defend the unwritten rules but after the incident, plenty of analysts and writers talked about it and none of them said they heard the rule before (this includes ex-players that work for the MLB Network) and other then his grandma, no one publicly came out to defend Braden on the unwritten rule. (most of the sentiment was "well, I guess it's a bad thing, but I never thought of it or heard about it.")

But even if it was such a bad thing (and I can understand why this would peeve a pitcher), what makes this a big overreaction is that he's still talking about it almost 3 weeks later. Just before Sunday's perfecto he brought it up. They went as far as to get a quote from his grandma!

Seriously, the only reason Braden isn't a laughing stock is because the guy on the other side of the coin is A-Rod.

Believe me, the topic of the Sox rotation is a hot one up here in NE. I do think the only decision to make was to send Wake to the pen. Beckett, Lester and Lackey are not even in the discussion. They have to continue to develop Buckholz even if just to trade him. That leaves Wake and Matsuzaka. There is plenty of flotsam and jetsam in the Boston pen, and Matsuzaka would just be one more reliever that can't get it done. It definitely doesn't suit his game to come out of the pen. Wake has done it before, and I think he knows that this will likely extend his viability for the whole season.

Actually I agree, I think Dice-K is the guy to put in the rotation for now. If he's still struggling then they can make a change, but right now he's the right choice.

The problem I have is how far Wake has fallen on the depth chart. I can see why you'd leave him out of important situations because all you need is one knuckleball that doesn't knuckle and the ball will go a long way, but it just sucks to see Wake in that mop up role now. He's a classy, team player and even with a great resume he's not complaining about where he is. So while I understand the move, as a fan, it stinks to see him demoted like this.

The reason A-Rod doesn't get the benefit of the doubt from fans because he pulls this shit all the time:

-Remember the 2004 ALCS when he tried to smack the ball out of the fielders hands when he was trying to get to first base?

-Remember him yelling at the third baseman on a pop up, "I got it!"

-And then running on the pitchers mound last month.

Where there is smoke there is fire. I actually like A-Rod more then Jeter, but the bottom line is Jeter never does stupid shit like this that even gets him in this position to be criticized.

I don't get that at all. I've never played the game and am not a big follower really, and I knew the rule, even thought it was written actually.

I just saw some poll about baseballs unwritten rules and 75% voted A-Rod was in the wrong. Possibly biased because it's A-rod I admit, but I thought everyone who even half followed the sport knew the 'rule'. Amazed that these analysts apparently claimed otherwise.

As i said, when MLB Network analysts showed the clipped and talked amongst themselves they didnt know the rule was there and even a pitcher (i forgot if it was Al Leiter ) said that it wasnt something for Braden to get so mad and basically make threats like Braden did...

John Smoltz and Jim Palmer are unaware of this "rule"... is it possible that perhaps you have this wrong? (especially when you say you're not a big follower)

There's a difference between slighting someone and there being some universal rule that apparently every high school player and non-fan knows.

His past does play a role. There's a little something called "benefit of the doubt." Utley or Mauer would get it. A-Rod would not. The reason he does not get it is because he has not earned it. He hasn't earned it because of his past behavior.

This isn't rocket science.
