James and the Giant Peach - August 3

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=4582

Walt Disney StudiosAn early announcement to retailers indicates that Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is set to release Henry Selick's animated movie James and the Giant Peach on August 3. No release details are available at the moment, other than the edition will consist of two discs (which might very well be a BD and DVD).

I'm not sure I wanna pick this up now. The transfer sounds average at best, and no new special features?

From reviewers who dont seem to realize that the soft focus and haziness was something that dates back to when the film was in theatres, and was a intentional artistic choice by the director.

the haze was also apparent in the hidef broadcast of the film on cable - the audio though from two of the reviews really perked me up, since even the broadcast's 5.1 sound, even though compressed was quite dramatic and had tremendous punch - notably during the rhino scenes.

Disney really blew it with this release. The BD is nowhere to be found. Went to Wal-mart, Target and TRU and none of them had it. Only Best Buy has it for $29.99 in-store and $24.99 online.

I passed on this, even with the $10 upgrade coupon. And for some reason, TRU (Canada) is selling this at $44.99!!

You got it. This is the first time I've gone to Best Buy and they were sold out of a new Disney release. They only got five copies in! Walmart ... same deal.

Re: James and the Giant Peach - August 3

Got this in from Netflix today. Glad there wasnt a good price for this so I didnt waste my money. I thought the transfer made the movie look atleast 15-20 years older than it was. Neither the live action or the animation looked sharp. Very disappointing for a disney release.

The movie has never looked crisp or sharp, it was how the director chose to shoot it. A few years ago when they had a 2 week limited engagement screening at El Capitan. durring the opening night panel discussion he spoke in great detail about his choices for the film stock and lighting and various other elements that were intentionally done to give the film its as he put it "DREAM LIKE" look and feel.

Re: James and the Giant Peach - August 3

I could understand that, but I dunno. I guess I expected alot more considering its bluray and Disney, ya know? Granted, I wasnt a big fan of this movie to begin with, but I was hoping it would've looked better than it does. And no, I'm not one of those people who dislike grain and like crazy amounts of DNR.

I didn't get around to purchasing the title last week, since I wasn't in town, and the Amazon 'sale' price was too high IMO, anyone find a cheap online price of the disc, I might just hold out and wait til a Borders 40% coupon

You can't use the $10 off manufacturers coupon online though.....

Best deal appears to be either price matching Best Buy's website price of $24.99 in-store and using the coupon for a total of $14.99 + tax, OR if you are a member at BJ's and your store received it in stock (mine didn't), buying it there for $24.99 - $10 manufacturers coupon - $5 BJ's coupon = $9.99 + tax....

Do we think Amazon is still shipping this with the slipcover?

(Don't judge me.)
