Fringe -- "Brown Betty" -- 04/29/10

Fringe

Synopsis:

Spoiler:
A bout with anxiety causes a self-medicating Walter to spin a musical fairy tale for Olivia's niece, and his fertile imagination becomes the setting for a subconscious song-and-dance exercise by the rest of the Division including Olivia and Broyles.

Here it is, the episode that most of you have been dreading. Fringe: The Musical. I am not joking.

Not looking forward to this one at all. Usually it's the first show I watch on Friday morning but I'll have to hold off viewing until I read some comments here.

I'll proceed with cautious optimism - the show has yet to disappoint me and I have no reason to think otherwise about this ep.

You'd really skip an episode based on comments in this thread? Some fair-weather fan you are! If you don't think a Walter-centric episode isn't going to be fairly loaded with some crucial backstory tibdits, then why watch the show at all?

I have to admit that pulling the niece out of no where like that is kind of hackneyed. I thought she and her mom were living with Olivia, yet we haven't seen them all season.

Your joking right? This can't be real. Is it real?

I am really wondering how I'll like this. I love this show, but these kinds of episodes usually leave a sour taste in my mouth.

I didn't say I wouldn't watch it but I'm not in a hurry to watch it as I usually am. I watch the show because I like the show, I like Sci-fi, I like mythology shows, I do not like musicals.

And of course I'm a fair weather fan, this is a TV show not a sports team. Every person that watches TV is a fair weather fan, when it's good you're a fan, when it's bad you're not.

Surprised by the trepidation I'm seeing in this thread. Buffy the musical was phenomenal. Dr. Horrible was also excellent. Granted those are both Joss Whedon, but this has freakin' nutty Walter Bishop dreamin' up all kinds of crazy crap. If he starts singing and dancing it's gonna be a freakin' masterpiece, nuff said.

Musical??? Shit!!! The only way this could sound worse is if the words "Romantic, Comedy" is included.

Sounds like Walter is telling a story which leads to the musical sequence.

I saw the promos and it has a 1950's Film Noirish look.

Normally I love Fringe but when I saw the description and saw the previews for this one, I set my DVR to skip recording this.

Re: Fringe -- "Brown Betty" -- 04/29/10

This was more Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow than "Once More With Feeling". Pretty cool IMHO.

Calling it a musical episode was a farce.

Well I was wrong about this one. Almost done watching it and didn't really care for it. Wasn't really a musical episode like Buffy, but more like a holodeck episode of TNG.

Re: Fringe -- "Brown Betty" -- 04/29/10

This seemed more like an episode that would come along in season 7 or so, when the writers were running out of fresh ideas - did not enjoy it, and the "musical" segments were cringe - worthy. You're better than that, Fringe writers.

Re: Fringe -- "Brown Betty" -- 04/29/10

It was an OK episode I guess. I actually would have preferred a little more singing. I liked how Walter's current events came through in the story. Not surprisingly, I decoded tonight's glyph code before the commercial breaks and got "HEART" This show is amazing.

It was an OK episode. Not that great, but better than I thought it was going to be. They should have just cut out the singing altogether, there wasn't very much of it thankfully.

Re: Fringe -- "Brown Betty" -- 04/29/10

Fun stuff, and I liked the way it dealt with Walter's heartbreak over Peter's rejection of him after learning the truth. Perhaps not central to the overall mythology, but an enjoyably different episode.

Head Over Heels
Plus, I loved all of the toys in Wheelchair Walter's lab.

And P.I. Olivia Dunham = Damn sexy...

I didn't dislike this episode but the whole time watching it I just kept feeling like I was missing something.

Re: Fringe -- "Brown Betty" -- 04/29/10

I too was surprised there wasn't more singing. In fact, there was so little of it that calling this a "musical" episode was downright false advertising.

Agree with poster above re. hotness of 40s look Olivia. I've always had a fondness for that femme-fatale 40s look.

Liked how they mixed 40s with modern tech. Kinda steampunk. Rotary phone on the desk next to a modern flat screen display. And those retro cell phones were very cool. Want one!

And nobody mentioned the "Brown Betty". Sounds like a potent mixture. LOL.

Obviously a filler episode but looks like we're getting back on track next week.

I enjoyed it but 3 minutes in I had a feeling I was in the right state of mind.

Re: Fringe -- "Brown Betty" -- 04/29/10

After watching Anna Torv all dolled up in an episode of "The Pacific" a few weeks ago it was nice to see her with that look again. And I actually enjoyed the musical choices for the most part. I'm pretty sure that it's a law that one must toke whilst listening to "Roundabout."
