That one is going to be tough to beat. Of course, there's always the chance this answer could change soon...

How about oldest movie with a living cast member we've actually heard of? That would be whatever movie was freakin' Mickey Rooney's first. According to IMDB, that's NOT TO BE TRUSTED (1926). His latest, according to IMDB, NIGHT CLUB, is due out in 2011. A career that's 85 years and still going...who else can claim that?

He doesn't come close, but The Borgnine is also starring in Night Club. His career started in 1951, and he's still going strong. The stories those two could tell on set...

Diana Serra Cary is still alive at the age of 91. She was a child star in the 1920s known as "Baby Peggy" and her first film was HER CIRCUS MAN in 1921. I know her from a book she wrote about Hollywood cowboys (genuine cowboys who worked on Hollywood westerns starting in the 'teens), one of whom was her father, Jack Montgomery. It was called The Hollywood Posse and it's a great book.

Jackie Cooper is up there as well. He was nominated for an Oscar almost 80 years ago.

Speaking of old movies with living cast members, Meinhardt Raabe died today at age 94. He was a Munchkin in The Wizard of Oz and the last surviving cast member with significant dialogue in the film.

As coroner, I must aver
I thoroughly examined her
And she's not only merely dead
She's really, most sincerely dead!

Here is an interesting Wiki article

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_surviving_silent_film_actors

Oddly, Magda Foy does not appear on this list.

After Mickey Rooney, the best known names (at least to those of us familiar with the era) would probably be Lupita Tovar and Barbara Kent.

I've actually seen some of Lupita Tovar's movies, most notably EAST OF BORNEO (1931). She also played Eve Seward in the Spanish-language alternate version of DRACULA (1931). Immortality indeed. Ms. Tovar will be 99 in July. She's the mother of Susan Kohner (IMITATION OF LIFE) and the grandmother of the Weitz Bros., of AMERICAN PIE fame.

Meinhardt Raabe, oldest living Munchkin from 'The Wizard of Oz,' dies at age 94

Meinhardt Raabe, 94, considered to be the oldest living actor who played a Munchkin in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, died Friday in Orange Park, Fla., according to The New York Times. Raabe was 23 years old when he appeared in The Wizard of Oz as Munchkinland’s coroner. During his brief speaking role, Raabe proclaimed the death of the Wicked Witch of the East by singing: “As coroner, I must aver/I thoroughly examined her/And she’s not only merely dead/She’s really, most sincerely dead!”

And it's Douglas Wilmer, not Wilner.

Otherwise, great list. Thank you.

Speaking of old movies with living cast members, Meinhardt Raabe died today at age 94. He was a Munchkin in The Wizard of Oz and the last surviving cast member with significant dialogue in the film. Not really true. The main lollypop guy who sings the song and hands the lollypop to Dorothy is still alive. Meinhardt was old as fuck though. I was at a wizard of oz event a couple months ago where they trotted out most of the surviving munchkins, Meinhardt being one of them (on left):

You are thinking of Jerry Maren of The Lollipop Guild. If you want to be technical, neither of them had any real lines in the film because they were dubbed by other singers. Raabe's character at least had his own dialogue.

As Magda Foy, who made her film debut 100 years ago, is still alive, has anyone thought to film a short interview with her (or, even better, give her a bit part in some movie)? I think having someone's film career span a century would be truly awesome!

I wonder if any actors born in the late 1890s (and appeared as babies on film) were alive in 2000. Being on film in 3 different centuries would be cool.

Raabe was dubbed, too. His dialog was Billy Bletcher, if I'm not mistaken. He and Pinto Colvig (Disney's Goofy) provided most of the munchkin voices. On the Ultimate Oz there are real speed recordings of some of the munchkin dialog and it includes a very deep voiced Bletcher delivering the coroner's lines. The only munchkins that delivered their own lines were the ones that said:

MUNCHKIN NO. 1
We thank you very sweetly
For doing it so neatly.

MUNCHKIN NO. 2
You've killed her so completely
That we thank you very sweetly.

I looked at IMDB, and did not see a death date for Magda Foy. Of course, IMDB has Eva von Berne as having died in 1930, while she appeared in a film in 1980 (which I have seen). IMDB is in a world of its own.

As of March 25, 2011, the oldest film with at least one living cast member is "The Story of Dida Ibsen," a German film of 1918 in which a child actress, Loni Nest, appeared. She is still alive at the age of 96.

The oldest American film with at least one living cast member is "The Unpainted Woman," of 1919, in which a child actor named Michael D. Moore (billed as Mickey Moore) appeared. Moore retired from acting in 1927 but continued to work in the production end of the film making industry until just over a decade ago. He is also currently 96 years old.

Another poster was absolutely correct that Magda Foy is no longer living. In fact, according to the Social Security Administration, she passed away in January, 1972 at the age of 65.

Surviving adult actors and actresses of the silent era are pretty rare at this point. It appears that only nine are still living, and only three worked in the U.S. film industry. The actresses who worked in Hollywood are Barbara Kent, Carla Laemmle and Lupita Tovar. The actor and actresses who worked in other countries are Johannes Heesters, Lelita Rosa, Pola Illery, Isuzu Yamada, Brigette Borchett and Dorothy Bartlam. The youngest of these people is 93.

However, there are at least sixteen child actors of the silent era still living. Besides Nest and Moore, surviving are Diana Serra Cary, Vondell Darr, Mickey Rooney, Jean Darling, Hanna Maron, Dickie Moore, Mildred Kornman, Leon Holmes, Edith Fellows, Billy Butts, Jane La Verne, Louise Watson, Billy Watson and Shep Houghton. It is not certain if Baby Ivy Ward is still alive.

Great list. I didn't even know Edith Fellows was still alive. Thank you. And welcome to the board.

Just for the record, Lupita Tovar, co-star of the Spanish-language version of DRACULA (1931), is the grandmother of the Weitz bros. who gave us AMERICAN PIE.
