Harold & Kumar Set For A Third Installment

According to Variety:
'Harold & Kumar' set for third puff
Hurwitz, Schlossberg to pen third outing
By TATIANA SIEGEL

Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who wrote "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle" and "Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay" and directed the latter, will return to write and direct a third installment for Mandate Pictures.

Greg Shapiro will return as producer.

Storyline is being kept under wraps.

Stars John Cho and Kal Penn are expected to reprise their roles as the ganja-loving duo because Mandate has options on the actors for the third installment.

New Line, which was folded into Warner Bros. in February, distributed the first two films. Warners will likely distribute the third "Harold and Kumar."

Mandate prexy Nathan Kahane said he is eager to revisit the stoner franchise.

"Thanks to Jon and Hayden, the Harold and Kumar movies pushed envelopes, broke boundaries and connected with fans," he said. "We are so grateful to be back in business with Jon, Hayden and Greg."

First film garnered a cult following, earning $18 million domestically in 2004 and generating more than $30 million in DVD coin. Sequel, which cost $12 million, earned $14.9 million its opening weekend before topping out at $38 million. "Guantanamo Bay" is set for release on DVD on Tuesday.

Mandate, which produced "Juno," has an upcoming slate that includes the Michael Cera starrer "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist"; "Passengers," with Anne Hathaway; and "Peacock," starring Cillian Murphy, Ellen Page and Susan Sarandon.

But....
Spoiler:
No more NPH?? Unless he returns as a Zombie, which would be awesome.

I really liked the first one but didn't get into the second one at all. I'll give a third a shot, I can't believe how profitable these things are to make.

Thought the second kind of blew...certainly not as good as the first. If they maybe switch up the formula and stay away from the overly weird shit (Cyclops) then I'll probably check it out.

There's something you should see after the credits.

I really enjoyed the first one, but the second felt overly silly. I would have much preferred if they had just done a European adventure since the sequel just felt like a re-hash, but just in the deep south.

I didn't even like the first one all that much. Maybe I'll watch it again someday.

Ah, good deal then. After sitting through the second one, I was just waiting for the damn thing to end, let alone waiting for any extra footage.

I thought the first one was amusing, but it's completely overrated by those who like it. Never saw the second, but I'll probably grab the DVD once it's cheap enough.

I loved both of them. I saw 'em both opening weekend.. I just think the second one definitely was missing most of the charm that made the first one so funny.

I'd be down for a third so long as it can top the second. First one is in my top 5 all-time favorites.

I love both of these flicks. I'd definitely see a third.

The first was overrated, but still funny.

The second sucked, but still funny.

I hope the third is still funny.

A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (2010)

It’s Going To Be ‘A Very Harold And Kumar Christmas’
Published by Adam Rosenberg on Thursday, May 7, 2009 at 2:40 pm.

When “Harold & Kumar” star Kal Penn traded in his bong for a ranking post in the Barack Obama administration recently, most fans naturally concluded that the stoner comedy franchise conceived by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg had officially gone up in smoke. Penn may or may not be out, but that didn’t stop Warner Bros from announcing today that “A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas” will hit theaters on November 5, 2010.

A title is all we have to go on for the moment, as the WB announcement made no mention of the film’s plot or casting. As hard as it is to imagine anyone other than Penn and co-star John Cho — who will be hard to miss as Hikaru Sulu in this weekend’s “Star Trek” — stepping into the shoes of the titular stoners, it’s a distinct possibility given the public nature of Penn’s new job in the White House Office of Public Liaison.

That said, Hurwitz and Schlossberg have proven themselves to be sharp writers and the Christmas backdrop is traditionally a good one for comedies (see also: “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”, “Scrooged”, “A Christmas Story”). Cho and Penn may or may not return, but the high comedy certainly will come November ‘10.

Please, WB, don't fuck this up.

Re: A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (2010)

I would be really, really surprised if there was any attempt at recasting. I'm sure Penn and Cho will be able to make room for the movie if the script is funny.

I'm just hoping it will be a smidge more restrained than the sequel. I liked the sequel, but the original was like a cartoon, set against a backdrop of reality, whereas the sequel was a cartoon set against the backdrop of a cartoon. It made the events seem less outlandish, which was an important contrast.

Re: A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (2010)

I don't want to be the guy that says "No Kal Penn = No Sale", because I don't think Kal Penn is that good of an actor to begin with... but he'll be hard to replace. I'm willing to bet a bunch of money that WB tries to get Dev Patel involved.

TheBus, I just noticed that I'm quoted in your sig. Good choice.

It won't be the same without Penn. Hope he's back.

If Penn doesn't come back they need to get Aziz Ansari.

Without the original cast, this smells of DTV to me.

Re: A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (2010)

After the 2nd one, I don't have much interest in any more Harold and Kumar films. The first one was hilarious, but the follow up was complete garbage.

I was amused by the first one, but the 2nd was pretty throwaway. I like Xmas comedies, though, so maybe this one'll be worth checking out.

I'd be all for this actually.

I could see Penn being involved, but having a smaller role due to his situation.

The title alone made me laugh. I can only imagine how many levels of wrong this movie will achieve. Of course preference for original cast.

Maybe they'll cast the kid from Slumdog Millionaire as Kumar.
