Taking a cue from Ticketmaster, theater owners choose to gouge consumers even more

Just one more reason to stay home and wait for the BD release. Ticket prices rise, in one case, by 26%.

Wall Street Journal

First half of the article:
Major U.S. movie-theater chains, seeking to accelerate the surge in revenues fueled by such 3-D hits as "Avatar" and "Alice in Wonderland," are imposing some of the steepest increases in ticket prices in at least a decade.

The new prices take effect Friday in many markets across the country in theaters owned by such major exhibitors as Regal Entertainment Group, Cinemark Holdings Inc. and AMC Entertainment Inc.

The increases, in one case as much as 26%, vary from theater to theater, but many cinemas are raising prices most—or even solely—for 3-D showings, which accounted for the vast majority of last year's 10% jump in domestic box-office sales. 3-D movies generated 11% of domestic ticket sales in 2009, up from just 2% in 2008.

At an AMC theater in Danvers, Mass., a Boston suburb, 3-D ticket prices are jumping more than 20% to $17.50 from $14.50, while the adult admission price for a conventional film will remain at $10.50. At one Seattle multiplex, adult admission is rising to $11 from $10 for a conventional film, to $15 from $13.50 for a regular 3-D showing and to $17 from $15 for Imax 3-D.

A 3-D Imax movie at New York City's AMC Loews Kips Bay will cost $19.50, up from $16.50.
$20 for one ticket? In this economy? They're out of their fucking minds.

I'll pay that $20 for Tron Legacy, but jesus christ, I'm not feeling ANY urge to go to the movie theater these days because of those price increases. For that much I could pretty much own a bluray of the film.

Oh well. The best 3D theater in town is independently run and charges $9 per show for 3D and $7 for non 3D.

Increased prices will just make me buy even more on Blu-Ray and DVD.

Kips Bay doesn't even have a true Imax theater.

Good new, looks like the 3D fad will come to a screaching halt. Jacking up the ticket prices will just cause tons of people to not see those. Of course the theaters/studios will see it as audience have gotten over 3D movies and not make any connection to the jacked up prices. Less & less 3D movies will get released.

Paid $14 for 3-D IMAX in San Antonio. So, total cost for my wife and I that night at the theater was $50 for tickets and concessions. I used to see about 88 movies a year in the theater. Those days are long gone now.

I saw a report about the theater in my town (a Cinemark) and they have no plans to raise prices (at this time I would assume).

I love watching movies on the IMAX screen, but at $20 a pop that's ridiculous. But at least one theater I usually go too offer matinee prices for IMAX at $15. I guess that means I'll be going to fewer midnight showings this year, which is a major bummer.

I went to my first movie in a while (Hot Tub Time Machine) for a matinee today and it cost me $6.00 each and it use to be $5.50 so no biggie for me. I don't know if our local theatre has raised prices yet but I assume they raised them to $6.00 too and we only go to matinee showings now anyways

I don't go to too many IMAX 3D movies a year. Or even that many movies. They can raise their prices. No biggie.

Re: Taking a cue from Ticketmaster, theater owners choose to gouge consumers even mor

well, screw 3-d anyway. If they only raise prices on that, I couldn't care less. I'm not a 13 year old boy.
on the other hand, if they up prices on non-3-d films, its simple, I will pick and choose which films I really want to see and wait for the rest on dvd.

I hate money-grabs, and although I love film, I kinda hope whoever thought of this chokes.

There's a theatre here that show's movies for $4. They get movies after the first theatre to get them is no longer showing it. It's the only place I see movies anymore.

Looks like my local theater stayed the same today: $7/$9 for 2-D, $10.50/$12.50 for 3-D.

Re: Taking a cue from Ticketmaster, theater owners choose to gouge consumers even mor

Tickets went up in my neck of the woods.

Looks like 3D went from $13.50 to $16.50
Regular showings went from $7 to $10
And afternoon showings went from $5(?) to $7

Fuck them.

I only go to maybe 5 movies in the theater a year, it will be even less now.

At those prices, why should I go out to the theatre when I could enjoy it at home on my new 40" LCD HDTV and (soon) Blu-ray player?

Yeah I heard, very ridiculous and horrible timing in this climate. Avatar just made people greedy. Avatar had raised ticket prices for Imax New York, so they're like let's try to re emulate that success. I'm very picky of what movies I see now in theaters. Bad reviews, I'll wait till dvd. Remote interest and good reviews, I'll wait till dvd. Amazing reviews and a film I actually want to see. Yeah I'll go see it.

Except with fewer people going to the theater that would translate into less word of mouth on any given movie. It seems if you wanted to promote your product on the home video formats you would want to entice people into the theater to see it so more people would be talking about the movie.

About a year ago, prices were 9.25-9.50 at the local chain. Now its 10.50 Although you can buy regal tickets at Costco, for 7.00$ each.
