I've decided the power cord for my Dell Inspiron 1501 is crapping out. Are there any aftermarket ones that are reliable? I think Dell is going to cost a fortune.

Try ebaying a used one perhaps?

Targus makes universal laptop power adapters that can be purchased at retailers like WalMart and OfficeMax. However, these cost more than the adapter from Dell (the Targus adapters start at $99).
The Dell adapter is $65 from their online store.

As I posted here before, my fiancee's old laptop stopped charging with the old power cord. We bought her a new laptop, but for shits and giggles I ordered one of the $9.20 cords from eBay. Charges the old one fine, and super cheap to boot.

I might give it a shot. Do you know what brand yours was?

Her laptop is a Toshiba brand and the cord is just a generic I think. If you want the brand of that, I can check when I get home. The only thing I have noticed is the thing does get pretty hot, so if you keep it on carpet, that could be a concern. I think it gets a bit hotter than the stock one but I didn't have the stock one around to compare to.

I don't know if Dell has changed but most third party universal adapters will not charge the battery. You will be able to run the laptop off of A/C though/
The powerbrick on my Toshiba laptop stopped charging about 18 months ago. I ended up getting a replacement through Mobile Tech Power (http://www.mobiletechpower.com/store/main.aspx)
