In order to help others who have a Toshiba DVD Player I would like to start a list of DVD's that give problems when played on any Toshiba DVD Players.

ID4: Locks up when switching to Chapter 34.
Volcano: Locks up at 2nd warning screen before loading menu.
Alice in Wonderland: Refuses to load anything.
Abyss: Loaded and played now won't load at all.

All above on 4109 firmware 2.400

Please post any DVD's your Toshiba has problem with.

Model 2200 freezes on The Abyss disc 2 on the pseudo multi angle feature. v 1.500

Hmmm . . . I've got a 3109 and have not yet experienced any problems w/ Abyss or ID4. Haven't watched the others you mentioned.

Audrey, you must be one of the lucky ones, people with 3109 usually have problems with those 2 discs... I got the 2109, works good so far

I've watched ID4 three times so far on my SD1200 v1.5 with ZERO problems. I wonder if the problem could have to do with a certain factory where the discs are pressed? Could certain batches be made in different locations?

I'll checkout The Abyss SE tonight. What part does the disc lockup?

toshiba 3109 played special edition version of id4 fine and reg version fine.i own abyss but have not had time to watch it.i will check it out and post.

SD-1200 has Abyss pseudo-pod multi-angle lockup too with firmware 1.3. Apparently this is solved with version 1.5.

Stutter lockup on Dark Crystal too, apparently solved as well, as well as several other issues that are minor. All in all, only a few problem discs

The lock up problem on the Abyss is NOT FIXED IN V1.5. I have that version and it does not work.

I have a 3109 v1.8 and my parents have a 1200 v1.5. Abyss and ID4 work on both with no problems.

Did you try disc 2 with the pseudo-multi angle feature on both machines?

I have a 3108 that will not even LOAD ID4.
So, last week I took it to my local Toshiba repair place for a firmware upgrade.
I will pick it up tomorrow and let everyone know if this fixed it.
My firmware b4 the fix is 1.0
After the fix it should be 3.05

I guess I am going to have to break down and bring it in. Might have to go thru DVD withdrawal or worst play my VHS tapes again.

Does anyone have the version 3.05 firmware and if so do you have any problem DVD's???

Yes. I went through everything on the second Abyss DVD with my Dad on the 1200 one Sunday afternoon when my Mom went to a wedding shower. We had first watched the director's cut of the movie. A few weeks later I had friends over and we watched Abyss DC, on my 3109, and I showed them alot of the extras on the second disc including the psuedo-multiangle feature. Which brings up another question -- why do you call it psuedo-multiangle?

Anyway, a couple weeks ago I took ID4 over to my Dad and showed him how to get in to the easter egg on the second DVD. He has had no problems that I know of and has, he said, watched both versions of the movie.

OK, I picked up my 3108 after having my firmware upgraded to version 3.300 R1.
It now plays ID4 without any problems.
Too Cool!
The upgrade cost me $50.

That is a shame that Toshiba had you pay to upgrade a player's firmware....$50.00??? According to Toshiba, there is nothing wrong with their dvd players.....
This should have been a free upgrade for you even if your player was not under warranty...this is a problem with the technology that Toshiba put out onto the market....not a matter of wear and tear!!!! I certainly will not purchase Toshiba in the future if this is any example of how they treat their customer base!!!!

You said that you took it to your local Toshiba repair place to have the firmware upgraded, could you please tell me where the local repair center is. I just got off the phone after 3 frustrating calls to Toshiba and they said that only by sending my player back to Atlanta could I have the firmware changed. Said Atlanta was the only place in USA since they needed to monitor the changes in firmware????

Last Toshiba anything I will buy. Trying to get info from them was like pulling teeth. No one would even tell me what the latest firmware for the 4109 is.

They seem to be very afraid to let it get out that Toshiba DVD's have problems. I guess many who do not have internet or don't know where to check are sending back DVD's by the case before they figure it is the player, since it will play many DVD's without any problem.

I'm sorry to hear all of these problems...I have a 2109 and a 1200, and haven't had any problems at all w/any of the apparent problem DVDs...odd.

To VSL, I found my local repair place by going to WWW.TOSHIBA.COM, selecting DVD as the product and using their Customer Solution option.
It asked me for a product "DVD" and my state.
It came back with two in-state dealers. One was only 30 miles away.
When I took it in, the repair guy asked my how I found out about the upgrade. He said that if asked, Toshiba would let him do the upgrade and that he had to report to Toshiba how I found out about it.
I found out by posting a problem question to this forum.

How he found out about it besides the fact that the player which Toshiba put out onto the market doesn't work with some dvds.........Toshiba is definitely off my list for electronics in the future!!! Stand behind your product and take care of the customers who have already received less than what they should have in the first place!!!! They act as if they are trying to hide something!!!

I am so lucky. I just got home and my answering machine has a message from Toshiba that they made a mistake and no don't send it in to have a firmware upgrade. There is no upgrade for the 4109, but if I would like to send them my player and the disk I am having problems with, they will look at it.

I think I am off to Wal-Mart and I am going to buy a GE or Sanyo or Panasonic or whatever the cheapest DVD player they have and I am sure it will play ID4 as well as the Toshiba, probably better.

Never had a problem with my 2109. Plays ID4 and Abyss flawlessly...albeit a slight layer change pause.

The latest is that I get home Friday and there is another message on the answering machine and it's a lady from the Toshiba Service Center where I was originally supposed to send my 4109 to have the firmware upgrade. She said for me to send it in to be fixed. Well since I had conflicting info from Toshiba, the first saying send it, the next saying not to, I deceided to call Norman's and see exactly what I could find out.

I spoke to the young lady and explained that Toshiba said there was no upgrade and I wanted to be sure before I packed it up and sent it in for nothing.

She put me in touch with one of their techs and he was very helpful. He checked on the 4109 and said that they had upgraded one and that the newest firmware was 3.0.

Finally someone who gave a damn and was very helpful. I am going to send my player to them UPS next week. This makes me feel a good bit better about a $500 DVD player but not a lot better about Toshiba. If they are having problems they should welcome the change to build trust. WHy not put the mdel and firmware versions on the net? If you are out of warrenty they charge to fix, if in warrty you still pay to ship it in. If they came clean with the information I think most consumers would have a much better opinion of Toshiba.

For anyone out there with problem DVD's and a Toshiba unit, I suggest you pursue the firmware upgrade.
