Speed/Forest Gump/2001: A Space Odyssey connection with H'wood Chinese Theater
So in Forest Gump there's a scene where Jenny is in Hollywood in 1968 and the movie showing on the marquee of the famous Chinese Theater is 2001: A Space Oddyssey. At the end of Speed, the subway crashes up through the street and stops in front the Chinese Theater and what's playing? 2001 of course. Both films were released in 1994. What's the connection?
I would guess that Forest Gump put up the fake 2001 posters to look authentic to the period. And then what? Speed filmed on the same day? That doesn't seem likely. Is it all a coincidence? Did 2001 ever really play at the Chinese?

It probably played at the nearby Cinerama Dome since it was "technically" a Cinerama movie. But it may have moved to the Chinese later in its run (or even played both theaters). I don't know.

I have a feeling the Speed one could be an homage to Jan de Bont's favorite film or something. It makes sense in Gump because that's what would have been out at the time, but probably not there:

I'm bumping this because I never got a satisfying answer. Seems like a big coincidence that the two movies were filmed in the same year and both show 2001 playing at the theater. They must have been filmed within days of each other right?

Nice Whitesnake reference!
Also, why are people so mad at thread bumps...is there a rule that thou shalt not bump old threads?
I say bump away, it does not matter if the thread is nearly 4 years old (like the Little House thread I bumped) or 15 years old...the more bumps the merrier. Thread bumps sometimes come from new 1 post count to their name members and sometimes it comes from folks who have been on this site since the beginning of time, it is all good as far as I am concerned.
ETA: Anyone complaining about thread bumps that contribute to a flurry of new activity on this site should be tarred and feathered considering we have a this place is dead thread. Thread bumps indicate this place is alive I tell you, it's alive!

If we were talking about a more obscure movie like The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, I could see being perplexed by the coincidence of it appearing at the end of Speed, but since 2001 is one of the most influential movies for filmmakers of that generation, it makes total sense for the director to decide to throw it on the marquee as a homage.
Do you read comics? Because I recall in issue 1 vol 2 of Grant Morrison's The Invisibles, a character has a speech about the real meaning of Speed, including the significance of 2001 appearing at the end. I'd dig out out of my collection and scan it, but some bastard stole all my Invisible comics when I was in high school.
