What were your favorite television sitcoms growing up?

So, what were your favorite sitcoms growing up?

I Love Lucy
The Golden Girls
Threes Company
All in the Family
Roseanne

These five, while some might say are dated, have escaped obscurity into a universal appeal -- all doing fairly well in syndication. All played around the world. All doing very well when they aired originally -- and all doing fairly well in syndication for years.

I Love Lucy, Golden Girls, Roseanne, and Three's Company all did well on DVD too! All in the Family, however, slumped which surprised me. It didn't sell well at all.

-------------------------------------

Mama's Family '83-'90

The show changes from night to day as it goes on... It transitioned from NBC to syndication between '84-'86 -- yep, a very long 2 year hiatus. Known for being the number 1 show in syndication when it returned in '86.

Mama goes from crusty old woman to bitchy, but lovable by season 3. Characters kind of get dumbed down into doing dumber things during the transition. The Grandchildren disappear, a new one is introduced, along with a new neighbor, and the show ended up doing better during its 3rd season. The remodeling of the show worked for ratings, but some fans of Carol Burnett hate this revamped show.

Two episodes that stand out from Season 1 are "The Wedding." This is where Eunice came in and they were quality episodes -- and some of the most memorable ones.

Rue McClanahan hated her role so much that she is killed off by season 3 -- before this season -- transitioning over to the Golden Girls along with Betty White. Betty White makes one final appearance in season 3 as Ellen in an excellent plastic surgery episode.

------------------------------------

Honorable mention goes to The Cosby Show.

Although this seems more like rotten candy compared to the above shows. Sweet enough to rot your teeth! The safest and sweetest show overall. Number one show and did fine in syndication.

On the other hand, I used to watch Gimmi a Break, Family Ties, The Hogan Family/Valerie's Family, Growing Pains, etc., too. These shows, however, are pretty much dated and stuck in their 80s time period. They did fine when aired in the 80's. However, they haven't done as well past the early 90's, in syndication. Growing Pains and Family Ties disappeared pretty quickly from Nick at Nite, for example. Gimmi a Break bombed ridiculously hard on DVD. Growing Pains didn't make it past the first season on DVD.

The Facts of Life somehow escaped this (probably one of the cheesiest shows of the decade/one of the most 80's), and did pretty well in the early 2000's in syndication on Nick at Nite. DVD sales not doing so hot though! It's popularity in the early 2000's seems to have petered out, and I don't see it anymore playing anywhere.

So, which ones did you used to watch growing up, and do you still watch them?

Re: What were your favorite television sitcoms growing up?

Growing up as a youth, these shows were what tickled my funny bone;
The Dick Van Dyke Show
Gilligan's Island
Leave it to Beaver
F Troop
The Little Rascals shorts
The Three Stooges shorts

Whenver I reached my teens I enjoyed more grown up comedies like;
All in the Family
M*A*S*H
Barney Miller
Maude

When the mood strikes, I enjoy watching them over. I amd currently rewatching Gilligan. This show is just timeless and still good for many chuckles.

Never watched many sitcoms. Seinfeld & the Simpsons are the only ones I remember watching routinely.

Friends
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

Gilligan's Island (on TBS at 3am during the summers)

Re: What were your favorite television sitcoms growing up?

Family Matters
Step by Step
Boy Meets World
Full House

you can probably guess my age..haha

though I enjoyed Mama's Family as well. I started watching it during the late 90s. One weekday morning at my friend's house, Beast Wars was a rerun, and my friend's mom suggested we watch Mama's Family. Ever since that day, I was hooked on the show. I think the first episode we watched was the Family Feud one.

the later years, I watched Friends and Seinfeld.

Today, it's How I Met Your Mother

Re: What were your favorite television sitcoms growing up?

Mary Tyler Moore
MASH
Beverly Hillbillies (in reruns)

Later:
Newhart
Cheers

All of these hold up pretty well for me except Cheers , which is good, just not in league with the other ones (IMO).

There were a bunch more I watched that were not my "favorite", but I enjoyed - Addams Family, Gilligan's Island, I Love Lucy, Dick Van Dyke, Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, Bob Newhart Show, Just the Ten of Us, Making the Grade (a 1-season sitcom set in a school which starred George Wendt), Growing Pains, Family Ties, Night Court, Cosby Show, Leave It To Beaver, What's Happening, Bewitched

That's all I really remember about my early days (early 20's and below).

The Bob Newhart Show (1972-1978)
MASH (1972-1983)
Good Times (1974-1979)
Happy Days (1974-1984)
Welcome Back, Kotter (1975-1979)
Barney Miller (1975-1982)

WKRP in Cincinnati (1978-1982)
Family Ties (1982-1989)
Cheers (1982-1993)

Too young to remember their original runs, but repeats prove that the two best sitcoms of all time were:

The Andy Griffith Show (1960-1968)
The Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-1966)

The only sitcom I could ever stand was Family Ties. It transcended the genre somehow. I would say Wonder Years, but it isn't a sitcom.

Three's Company
Gilligan's Island
WKRP

I was in love with Joyce Dewitt, Dawn Wells, and Jan Smithers... all played second to their sexpot costars... the girls next door were far more attractive than the sex symbols....

Also, Brooke Theiss and Heather Langenkamp (who was actually the oldest of the three).
