I am getting a Kenwood HTB-503 A/V system that I ordered over the net, now I am trying to figure out what connections I need. I have a cable box, vcr, dvdplayer that needs to be hooked up to my tv. What I am wondering is since I am going to run everything through my reciver, I only need to run a S-video cable to my TV right ? Since all the sound is going to be handled by the reciver, either from the DVD, VCR, or cablebox.

You are correct that the t.v. only needs the video connection. It is nice to have a direct audio connection for dvd to view movies without firing up the whole system, but most t.v.'s don't have enough connections for this.
I'm not familiar with that model of receiver, but most people use their receiver to switch audio and video. I use rca cables for audio and video for vcr,cable,etc. and have a direct connection from the dvd player to the t.v. using the best connection option available (your case sounds like s-video). I use the regular rca cable for the lower quality video, and because I go through the switching on the receiver I only need one input on the t.v.

The Reciever for the HTB-503 is the Kenwood VR407. Here is how I would hook up your components to the reciever:
Cable Box/TV - Hook it up between the wall cable jack and the TV using the screw on Coax cables. Then use your TV's Audio out and plug it into an input of the reciever.
When you want to use your reciever when watching TV, just set it to that input (Video1, Video2, Dat, Tape, etc).
VCR - All three cables (YRW) go into the 3 jacks for the VCR. Then on the reciever's TV out, connect that using a Svideo cable (if your TV has that). When you want to watch the VCR, turn the reciever to the VCR input, and the TV to the Video-in (Or Video1/2/3 etc. if it has multiple inputs), you will turn your TV to the Video In where its connected to the reciever whenever you want to watch DVD/VHS or anything else that is Video connected to the Reciever.
DVD Player - Use the Svideo input from your DVD player into the DVD svideo ins of the Reciever. The audio, you can use the COAX out of your DVD into the Orange Digital COAX Jack (Looks like a regular composite jack but ORANGE), or the Optical out of the DVD and optical in Jack of the reciever to get 5.1 sound.
