Modern Family -- "Fears" -- 03/03/10

Modern Family

Synopsis:

Spoiler:
Phil's fear of the dark and aversion to bugs threatens to derail a mission of discovery with Luke beneath the house. Meanwhile, Cameron and Mitchell invite Lily's doctor (Suzy Nakamura) for brunch; Claire takes Haley for her driver's test; and Gloria is suspicious of Manny's reason for passing on a birthday party for a friend at an amusement park.

It's back! Just caught the Valentine's Day episode a few days ago. Fricking hilarious episode. They continually bring it each week.

By far the 2nd best comedy on broadcast television right now behind 30 Rock.

Really didn't like it so much at first, but waiting for new episodes has been painful, so I must be an addict by now.

Re: Modern Family -- "Fears" -- 03/03/10

Every week this show consistently delivers the funny. It has some of the best one-liners and exchanges between the characters. I love writing down the lines just to laugh at them later...

Manny: "...Dying alone."

Phil: "Fancy Ponce."

Mitchell - "Her first words were every gay father's worst nightmare."
Cameron - "Mommy...!"

Cameron: "Are we not providing her the necessary amount of feminine influence?"
Doctor: "No, I'm pretty sure that is not the problem..."
Cameron: "You know it's because you're Asian, right?, What am I supposed to ignore the Giant Panda in the room?!"

Haley: "I'll be less nervous if you smile...No, that didn't help."

Manny: "What if I fall out?"
Gloria: "I will catch you."
Jay: "That's impossible. He would crush you."

Luke: "You lost my truck! Grandpa just gave it to me! Stop yelling! Truce?"

Manny: "I'm not man enough to fight this. Here, hold my purse."

Alex: "Oh my God. You and Dad together suddenly makes so much sense."

Phil: "I'm 100% certain it's possible."

Phil: "Does that make me a hero?...Yes it does."

Phil: "You know, it almost doesn't matter what is up there...What matters is what you do with the money you get from what is up there."
I loved Haley getting out of the car and forgetting to put it in park and Claire yelled at her to run to the counter and get her license before the instructor could change his mind. That payoff for Phil and Luke was great, and add to that it was Halloween decorations, made it all the funnier.

I really like the "cheesy" wrap-ups they do for this show; I can't imagine them working in the context of another show, but here they fit perfectly and come across as sincere. This episode especially had a great conclusion for all of the storylines. Loved Cameron and Mitchell there at the end realizing it was the doll and not Lily.

EDIT: I can't wait for the Season 1 DVD; I'm definitely going to want to re-watch the entire season over the summer.

I loved "Oh my God. You and Dad together suddenly makes so much sense." as well. Finally made sense why they ended up together

Really? I saw that coming a mile away and was hoping the show wouldn't resort to such a cheap, obvious joke. I found that thoroughly disappointing.

Otherwise a rock-solid episode though.

Manny's "dying alone" comment and his outfit he wore to the pier cracked me up

Yeah, Manny's "Old Salt Fisherman" outfit was funny. Otherwise, the ep was just ok. Maybe i'll have to watch it again.

Tons of funny lines, too many to remember. This show never disappoints.

Gloria (to Manny and Jay): Here, you take my girly purse. And here's my floppy hat. And if you need the ladies' room, it's right over there.

I think one of the keys to this show's success is the three storylines. There is so much ground to cover in 22 minutes that every line has to count so it all zings pretty well.

Manny makes me laugh the hardest. I hope this show is on so long that we see him in teenager situations. But then, he has the soul of a 50 year old, so being older may not change his outlook any.

Compared to the funny that the Moon Landing and Valentine's episodes brought, I thought this episode wasn't quite as funny. But, I did enjoy it substantially.

I made this same comment a couple of nights ago. This purchase is highly anticipated.

Did you all catch the comment that caused Phil and his son to think there was buried treasure under the house?

It was very subtle (my friend at work didn't catch it).

He said that to Phil's oldest daughter (the one who finally passed the driving test). They didn't dwell on the joke for obvious reasons, but we all knew that Phil & his son were not going to find any buried treasure under the house.

I didn't/still don't get it.

Besides the Phil stuff, I thought the episode was a bit meh.

I'm guessing Haley and the repair guy...

Or he was simply oogling her titties.

Just finished watching the Tivo'd show. The opening sequence where all of them are talking about their fears was hilarious. This show has such great one-liners.

This sequence was my favorite: (thanks kstublen)
Cameron: "Are we not providing her the necessary amount of feminine influence?"
Doctor: "No, I'm pretty sure that is not the problem..."
Cameron: "You know it's because you're Asian, right?, What am I supposed to ignore the Giant Panda in the room?!"

If you haven't deleted the episode yet, would please watch the "That's quite a collection you've got down there" scene again and tell us exactly how it played out?
