TCM reporting A Star is Born - 6/22/10

Turner Classic Movies is showing a 2-disc book type deluxe special edition of A Star is Born being released on Blu-ray Disc June 22, 2010.

Honoring the gripping masterpiece that marked Judy Garland’s triumphant return to the screen, A Star is Born (1954) will reveal its stunning restoration by Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging (MPI) when it debuts on Blu-ray Disc June 22, 2010 from Warner Home Video (SRP $34.99) in a dazzling 2-disc book format with 40 pages of gorgeous photography, film history and more.

Winner of two Golden Globes* (Best Actress, Judy Garland and Best Actor, James Mason) and nominated for six Academy Awards®, this powerfully moving and glamorous story reawakens when it arrives on Blu-ray Disc for the very first time. Offering the best possible way to see the film at home, the Blu-ray release will also feature impressive bonus content including alternate takes, deleted scenes, excerpts from Garland’s audio recording sessions, a collectible book of rare photos, press materials and an illuminating essay by film historian John Fricke

So this will be two discs, despite the seemingly weak "impressive bonus content" ?

Maybe it's only me but I don't like the Haver restoration I find the photo montages clumsy and awkward.
Has anyone ever seen the movie before 1983 ?

Yes, and it's missing a half-hour of footage! Horrible.

The Haver print restores 25 minutes of full image and sound, and has 5 minutes of photo montages.

But the famed "mystery collector" rumored to have a complete print has finally been publicly named. My sources are still very skeptical:

Warner's cheapness strikes again...

Disc two is a DVD. Thankfully the film is on a BD50.

Bah, so much for this:
(Warner Home Video's George) Felsteinstein confirmed our earlier report that the extras include a remastered version of William Wellman's classic 1937 version.
Who needs the 1937 version on a second disc when we can have an extra copy of the 1954 version? Thanks, WB!

The First Disc (Blu-ray) has a runtime of 2:56:17.

The Second Disc (DVD) is simply the Special Features. I'm going through it now and don't see a version of the 1937 version at all.

Thanks for checking, but I wasn't really expecting it to be there - WB would have listed it as an extra in the press release. The New York Post article I quoted is from November 2009.

I glanced through it...BD looks pretty impressive. I'll sit down and watch it this weekend. Not huge Garland fan besides Oz.

Re: TCM reporting A Star is Born - 6/22/10

From the March 1 NY Post, where this was originally reported:

The long-awaited Blu-ray debut of "A Star is Born'' will arrive on June 22, Warner Home Video announced today. This is a 6K transfer of a new restoration based on the late Ronald Haver's famous 176-minute reconstruction of the 1954 George Cukor classic with Judy Garland, which was drastically cut after its roadshow debut. There are tons of special features, including outtakes and alternate takes. But the list on the press release below doesn't mention the 1937 version of "A Star is Born'' with Janet Gayor, which WHV's George Feltenstein told me as late as last fall would be part of the package. Daniel Selznick, son of producer David O. Selznick, told me two years ago that WHV was doing a high-definition transfer of a UCLA restoration of the 1937 original, which has long languished in public-domain hell. Perhaps there were right issues; I hope to have more information later today.

"When we looked at the master of the ’37 'A Star is Born,' we realized that it really needed, more importantly, deserved a special restoration…using our Ultra Resolution process to bring out the glorious Technicolor of that film,'' said a Warner rep in an e-mail. "So rather than it be an add on…some less than-terrific extra content, we pulled it back so as not to diminish the importance of either versions.''

Hopefully, this means the earlier version will also be released in Blu-ray.

Well, that's something. Let's hope it doesn't end up getting dumped in the Archive.

So instead of delaying both versions to 2011 so they could be on the same disc (or a two disc set), they decided instead to gouge customers with releasing the 83 version in a Digibook and will gouge - I mean release- release the other version later, also at a high price.

Gimme a break.

First, Garland fans didn't want to wait another year.

Second, if they do an Ultra-resolution transfer (not cheap), they're entirely justified in doing a separate release.

Didn't want to wait another year? Are they all 80 on their death bed?

Re: TCM reporting A Star is Born - 6/22/10

No, many of them are under 30, if you look at the posts on Garland message boards.

The ASIB release was originally announced for 2009, so 2011 would actually be a two-year delay. Fans were natually eager to see the $100,000 restoration as soon as possible.

And, as I said, the expense of an ultra-res transfer warrants a separate release of the 37 version (which I am also eager to see).

I don't frequent Garland forums...

Well that's just awesome. You and others can Just pay more money later because a whole year delay would just be crazy. Whatever.

Re: TCM reporting A Star is Born - 6/22/10

"I don't frequent Garland forums..."

Isn't that why we come here? To learn from others?

And you're missing the point. The problem was not about time, it was about expense. An ultra-res transfer necessitates a separate release to make back the investment.

I'm a big fan of the '37 version, and I'd rather pay more for an ultra-res transfer than get a lesser transfer as an extra.

DVD Beaver review
It looks very nice, but I wish there was some sort of documentary extra, or a commentary track.

Re: TCM reporting A Star is Born - 6/22/10

In comparing the version on TCM last night with the DVD, I found that all the film jumps after dissolves have been corrected! There are a lot of them, too. Is that standard practice for restorations like this? It really makes a difference.

Re: TCM reporting A Star is Born - 6/22/10

Got the Blu-ray yesterday, and it looks great. I wanted to share one discovery:

They fixed the synch in the carhop scene (for which they had a 16mm alternate take that didn't match the audio take). At first, I thought they had altered the video (which is what I had attempted, with little success), but when I ran the video in synch, there was no change. So then I ran the audio in synch and discovered that they altered the audio track. The beginning and end are the same, but all the dialogue has been tweaked, with the exception of "everything in the place, all burgered" - which always matched. Cool!

Here's a private comparison clip:

So Warner wants us to pay for the second movie instead of giving it to us for free? Damn them!
