*This generation, meaning they began their life on the 360, PS3 or Wii. Constraining it to this generation leaves out your Samus Aran, Master Chief, Lara Croft and Kratos's of the world.

I thought about Sackboy, but decided against. Cute yes, but horrible to control and he's surrounded by a mediocre game at best. GLaDOS is a good one but hard to visually represent.

I'd have to say Big Daddy.That first trailer with the Big Daddy fight convinced me to buy Bioshock, so badass.

Drake and surrounding cast were the first thing that came to mind, but this generation is absolutely ripe with generic spacemarine, musclehead or everyman protagonists. Usually the enemies are more interesting.

This is probably cheating, but I honestly think my favorite would have to be the 300 lb, effeminate British black guy I played through Saints Row 2 with. I think that game had the best implemented character creation I've seen. The character you put together can completely change the tone of the game and I wouldn't have enjoyed it half as much if I'd been playing as a generic gangster.
