What old franchise/series would you like to see brought back in its original style?
The Sonic thread has me thinking about how cool it is that so many classic franchises are beginning to make new games in their old style. We have the new 2d sidescrolling Sonic coming, Megaman last year, New Super Mario Bros on DS and Wii, as well as series that never really went away like Castlevania, the DS and Advance Metroids, etc.
What other classic series, from the 16bit era back, would you like to see resurrected, and not just redone in the Bionic Commando style (which is probably selling that remake short to say it was simply redone), but actually continued. The series could have been made in another style, as long as the original style of the game has been dropped. So say there weren't any new sidescrolling Mario games in the last 5 years, you could say that series, even though Galaxy and Sunshine exist.

Did Sonic go back to 2-d yet? I don't think I've played a really good 3d Sonic game... ever.
I really, really wish they would go back to making traditional Phantasy Star RPGs, and not MMO stuff. And although there have been many great srpgs lately, I wouldn't mind another Shining Force.
edited to add: I should learn to read better, I see Sonic is already going back to 2d...
Also, Castlevania kinda did go away for a while, when they became Metroidvanias. Not that I'm complaining, still much better than the 3d abominations that have come out.

I agree some of the classic NES games would be awesome. Contra, Castlevania, Tecmo Bowl ....

there was a tecmo bowl that came out recently on the DS (though with no NFL license). And apparently NBA Jam is coming back on the Wii. Gotta love the underpowered systems... and I'm not dissing the Wii at all, I love Shiren and Tecmo vs. Capcom and the like, which wouldn't necessarily have been made on the 360 or PS3.
And isn't there some retro Contra and Castlevania update on Wiiware?

I don't know if this game is great, but I would really like to see Blaster Master comeback.
Another game that I haven't played in 20 years, but remember having a great time with, is River City Ransom. That, with online coop on XBLA or PSN, would be pretty sweet.

I'd love to see newer versions, or Hell, even 360 arcade versions of these Coleco games:
Venture
Mr. Do!
LadyBug
Omega Race
Mouse Trap
Pepper II
God, I loved all of those games, but the controller for the Coleco sucked!!

For Space Harrier, they need to just port Planet Harriers. It never got a home version (Dreamcast would have been the system).
When you mean "style," do you mean gameplay, graphics, or both? I don't want to see games in the retro graphical style, but I would certainly welcome new 2D games. I'd like to see a new Ghouls 'N Ghosts similar to the PSP version.

Metal Gear. No BS about clones, Foxdie, long ass mulit-act death speeches, or hour long rants about how nukes are bad.

FALLOUT. I fully accept that I'm alone in my loathing of Fallout 3. It only fuels my hatred of that POS game. I'd love to see it return to its tactical, turn-based roots while incorporating greater graphics, detail, storytelling, branching, and other interactive elements.
Obviously a PC game (not 16 bit) but it *IS* from the 16bit era. So phhbbt.

Pepper II was kinda like Qix only alot faster.
Mr. Do!
Mr. Do was a little like Dig Dug but way better. You could push the apples to drop them.
