I think it's a Hong Kong Blu-Ray player. I wish I knew more about it because my multi-region MALATA is a Chinese company as well and I've been happy with my Malata for more than 7 years...

You can get a Sherwood BDP-5004 -- the same as a Momitsu 899, which uses a remote code to change regions -- for $157 shipped on Amazon.

I heard that the shherwood has an annoying hum when it plays though? Whats the point of great quality when the blu ray player is making a distracting noise?

Find a LG BH100 or BH200 as both can do Region Free BDs and, as a bonus, HD DVDs. BH100 can be had for $100ish and BH200 about $250ish. I currently have a BH100 and it's been fine. HD DVDs look great to (sold my Toshiba A30).

It's loud when it starts up, but it's not distracting when the movie's actually playing.

1. even if I would be sitting 4-5 feet away from the tv?
2. And what about during movie scenes with no noise or dialogue - during quiet scenes, can you hear the player noise?
3. Should I even be making the possible noise issue a factor of buying this player or not?
4. What if this player is in a tv stand shelf that doesn't have glass doors - is the noise even louder?

I bought mine from TheNerds.net for $154 last Friday and it was on my porch Monday morning. I haven't got around to hooking it up yet, plus I don't have any out of region blu-rays yet.

The BH's can play any region BD with a remote hack. Yes, it can play any ABC BD, but if it's locked to B or C, it'll play those as well. That's what you wanted, right? The ability to watch any Region BD?

What are the best blu-rays that are available in other regions?

Yes. You have to download an ISO, burn to disc, and then put it in (installing software) and it will make it DVD region free.

How many years did yours last? Did you take care of it?

I would really feel bad if I got a new DVD player or a Blu Ray player, because my Malata has literally lasted 9 years with no probs! It would be like cheating on it if I got a new player.

I don't suppose it does PAL -> NTSC for DVD's as well, does it?

This isn't too widely known, but most upconverting A/V receivers will display PAL through the HDMI outputs at the proper frame rate.
