John Woo's Red Cliff 3-23-2010

Magnolia Home Entertainment will be releasing the John Woo film in two variations, a 148mins US Theatrical Cut and an 288mins International cut.

I've seen both versions and I strongly recommend the shorter North American cut over the longer 2-part Chinese cut. There's some good stuff that was cut, but overall it works much better in the shorter cut. If you're a Woo completist, though, you should see both.

My only problem with the theatrical cut was how rushed the first half hour felt. If the longer version introduces the characters a bit more slowly before the action starts, then I'd definitely like to see it.

Yeah, there's a lot of good stuff in the opening sequences in Part 1 of the longer version that I missed in the shorter cut.

And there's a whole "romance" between Zhao Wei (the princess) and a soccer player (it's called something other than "soccer") when she's undercover as a male in the enemy camp that we miss in the longer version.

But there's so much of the waiting, waiting, waiting for the wind to change in the longer version that drove me nuts.

Y'know, they could have kept in some of the good stuff they cut and turned it in as a three-hour cut. That would have been ideal.

Yes! I'm very interested in this! Although this will be a blind buy
i'm willing to take a shot on it.
I love those Asian war movies from the 14th Century or so.
I have a bunch of them already and would love to add this one
to my collection.

The original language track for this film is Mandarin, not Cantonese.

Re: John Woo's Red Cliff 3-23-2010

Received my Red Cliff DVD, the 2 part International version.
I must say that I think it's great. I'm very happy with it
and would recommend it to anyone interested.
But one thing is, if you don't like subtitles, it's not for you.

I was able to pick up the 2 disc International version on BluRay from Barnes and Noble for $20 and change using my B&N membership and the coupons in the B&N thread on the DVD Deals forum.

Re: John Woo's Red Cliff 3-23-2010

Just to let people know who get the Magnolia release of the cut 1 movie version of both films, the English subtitles seem to dip into the English dub script most of the time. The differences don't seem to be that major at this point but just to let everyone know for the record of those planning to watch that version in Mandarin with English subtitles. The Spanish subtitles are totally exempt from this interestingly enough (just like Lionsgate's New Police Story DVD).

However, the Magnolia release of the original 2 part version does not have this issue with the subs. Then again, Magnolia did not commission an English dub for John Woo's original 2 movie version.

This is one DVD I'll have to get....Woo's original 4+ hour cut. The 2 1/2 hour Reader's Digest condensed version holds no interest for me.

Re: John Woo's Red Cliff 3-23-2010

When I went to get the international cut at Bestbuy I noticed they were only selling it separately as part I and Part II @ 14.99, I rather get the 2 disc set!!

Combined set meaning two cases shrinkwrapped together, or one disc with everything on it?

Re: John Woo's Red Cliff 3-23-2010

1 case with both discs in it. That's how amazon.com is selling it: http://www.amazon.com/Red-Cliff-International-Version-Part/dp/B0030A6ICG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1269895898&sr=1-2

Surprised that Magnolia is selling it also in separate cases. Who would want to only buy half the story?

As Running Man said, it's one case with the two discs packaged inside.

thanks for the info. I guess it is cheaper to do this way, since they sell them individually too. As they have to manufacture one less disc. But as The Running Man said, why did they even bother with releasing them seperately?
