IMAX / Avatar Questions

Excuse my lack of knowledge here But I recently saw Avatar in Real 3-D,(fantastic by the way), because I wanted to see the full aspect ratio. I skipped on the IMAX version because I thought IMAX was a smaller screen aspect ratio. Isn't that correct???
I thought Imax was closer to a 4x3 ratio so some of the film would have to be cropped on that image , No??? Can someone please enlighten me on this IMAX matter and screen ratio's etc...thanks

Re: IMAX / Avatar Questions

IMAX screens are 1.44:1, or about 4x3. Avatar in IMAX is about 1.77:1, or 16x9. That ratio shows all the image. The digital presentations are either at 1.85:1 or 2.35:1, both of which cut off either a little information (in the case of 1.85:1) or a lot (2.35:1). The difference between 1.85:1 and 1.77:1 is pretty slight, though. However, IMAX (not digital IMAX, but film IMAX), is undoubtedly the best way to see Avatar.
