ps3 won't play games/BDs but will play SD DVDs
Okay, so over the last couple days, my ps3 has frozen up twice while playing Bioshock. I didn't think much of it. I just went to go play by This Is It BD... and everything started fine, but a minute or so in it froze again. Now it won't recognize any BD movies at all. As far as games, sometimes it recognizes it...but usually not. last time trying ot load Bioshock i got "an error occured during the start operation".
standard DVDs though...all play with absolutely zero problem. I formatted the hard drive last night, Bioshock started up, then froze. Now I'm getting nothing again.
Any suggestions before I go out and buy a new one?

Do you actually have a PS...2?
I went and checked AVS and a couple of other forums, and this sort of thing may be as simple as a software upgrade issue. What version of firmware are you using? At its worst, the Blu-ray laser might by failing (which is why it can still play red-laser content like DVD).

No warranty. This was actually a replacement PS3 sony sent me after the HDMI port died on my first one, so it only had the 90 day warranty and that was well over a year and a half ago.
I guess my only option at this point is to buy a new one or pay Sony $150.

I had the same issue a couple months ago on my 60GB. BD games/movies would skip/freeze and finally just stopped reading altogether. It ended up being due to the laser going out as others have said. And yes, those are pretty much the only options =/.

These are your only options, aside from attempting to replace the laser yourself. The exact same issue happened to my 40GB a couple of weeks ago. I tried pressuring Sony customer service to fix my unit for free because the laser-failing problem is clearly widespread and a significant manufacturing issue, but I was stonewalled. If you do some internet searches you'll find countless people experiencing the same issue. If you search eBay you'll find quite a few sellers selling the replacement laser for those brave enough to do a DIY fix. Sony simply won't admit the problem is as prevalent as it is, which is frustrating but not surprising.

If you are feeling handy, the following thread on Blu-ray.com shows you how to replace the laser yourself. There are lots of user reports and comments also there:

So that makes three generations of Playstation that have a widespread problem with failing lasers...

It is because they buy those things so fucking cheap. A guy at a reputable repair shop told me that they buy the same drives that Sony does and out of every ten he said that two or three are dead right out of the box.

I can never bring myself to buy a PS3 or XBOX360, because they're such shitty machines. Maybe next generation will be better, although I doubt it.

i had this happen a few weeks ago, the next day it worked again so i immediately took it to gamestop and traded it in for 200 bucks to use for a new slim, let it sit for a bit and try it again.

I've got the same issue right now. From what I've read going through Sony will get you a refurb and who knows what 'model'.
I'm seriously considering going through these guys - http://www.gophermods.com/
Very good reviews and members of the BBB. I'd also get my own PS3 back and it would save some money. Plus it happens to be local for me...
