I have recently been interested in purchasing a new DVD player and I had the SD-1200 in mind but I am skeptical. I keep hearing about problems with certain movies that seem to be reoccurring with this player. What’s the deal here? The reviews are great but people keep complaining. I need some feedback here so that I can make the right decision. It's pretty much between this and the Pioneer DV-525. Recommendations???

The picture and sound from the Toshiba is excellent. The problem seems to be that the instruction set which they call firmware on the processor chip has problems with some of the DVD formats. Seemless branching seems to be one of the biggest problems. Most people have had to send in to get firmware upgrades sooner or later. If the player is out of warrenty it seems they are charging $50 plus the cost of shipping to send it to Atlanta.
If you buy an occassional DVD you may not run into a problem. If you are lucky enough to get a player with the latest firmware version you should also be in good shape. If you get a player with an older version you will have problems with all the newer large scale DVDs, such as special editions or DVD's where 4 hours or so of material is on a single sided disk.
Good luck

Buy the Pioneer!!! Stay away from Toshiba....if you have seen the recent threads regarding all of the problems that Toshiba players have been giving people, you would not even be considering buying one of their players. Check them out if you have a chance!!!
One of the biggest problems is that Toshiba is failing to back their product which they are putting out on the market and when people call complaining about problems with playing certain dvds they are being told by Toshiba there are no reported problems. Toshiba knows there is a firmware problem and are failing to admit to their customer base that they probably need their machines updated. Buy the Pioneer if that is the only other one you are considering purchasing!!! Good Luck!!
