I recently purchased a subwoofer on eBay -- a Boston Accoustics PV600, based on other people's recommendations here. I understand this subwoofer is supposed to have a fairly musical sound, and I would like to make sure it is working well and undamaged. Does anyone here have a recommendation for what I should play to test the subwoofer's sound? DVD or music CD recommendations will do! Thanks.

Try the 1812 Overture (cannons) or Tocatta and Fugue in D Minor which has very low frequency organ notes.

Avia Guide to Home Theater has a LFE sweep. It starts out around 200 Hz, and goes all the way down to 20-25 Hz. It is a very good test for your subwoofer

I agree that The Haunting, Chapter 10 has some deep bass. Also try the main menu in Godzilla,

Madonna : Erotica, Ray of Light
David Bowie : Earthling
Deep Forest : Boheme
Metallica : And Justice For All, Black

You could get down to about 30Hz with most of the above

You're better off starting with a test disc that contains frequency sweeps than a movie. Besides Avia, Stereophile has a test CD w/ the appropriate sweeps.

If you can find a copy, Mobile Fidelity put out an audio test disc by Alan Parsons (who also happened to have a project )that has standard tones, sweep tones, 0 dB reference tone, spoken word, instruments and music. I find it invaluable when czeching out / setting up equipment.

If you like more urban beats, you can always check out some car audio bass testing CDs. They're always fun, because they have the "Warning: Extreme Bass - not responsible for speaker damage" type of labels.

There's a two-DVD set called "the Ultimate DVD Platinum". The second disk has a whole set of sweep tones calibration tools, phase-adjustment tracks, and so on.
