Fox and Time Warner Fee Standoff

http://money.cnn.com/2009/12/24/news...ey_mostpopular

Has anyone heard about this? The fox network, along with FX, Food Network, and The Weather Channel might be dropped from Time Warner if a Deal isn't made by Thursday. Didn't something like this happen with CBS/Paramount/Viacom earlier this year? As a Time Warner Customer its leaving me very concerned.

Re: Fox and Time Warner Fee Standoff

This is one of the reasons why I dropped Time-Warner.

Same thing with my local NBC channel last year, same thing with Big-Ten network the year before that.

When I called them about it, they told me about not wanting to pass increased costs on to the customer that the channels were asking. Then I asked them if they would lower my monthly rates if they did stop carrying the channels. After a long silence and some dancing, they of course said no. I hate Time-Warner.

Re: Fox and Time Warner Fee Standoff

Uh-oh...glad I don't have Time Warner anymore. They play hard ball. Three years ago where I live, right around this time actually, Time Warner dropped Fox. I switched to satellite (couldn't miss Family Guy, Simpsons, and 24 to name a few) but it was over a year before Time Warner and FOX agreed to amend and Time Warner added Fox back to its line up just before the Super Bowl.

I don't get why satellite seems immune to those demands. Is it that they already pay the locals or the locals just can't demand money from them?

I really don't mind this. I dont watch a single show on Fox anymore and aside from the occasional movie on FMC almost all the soccer games on Fox Soccer Channel I can watch online or at a Pub.

I don't see how they will allow this to actually happen. The NFL playoffs are about to start, and tons of people would raise hell if those games were taken away from them over something so stupid. This will likely be resolved by the end of the week, and certainly before the first NFL playoff game on FOX on January 10th.

It pisses me off and Im sick of the commercials where TWC trying to come holier than Fox and they dont want to roll over... I really wish Fios would come to my area so I could drop their asses especially if this happens.

Re: Fox and Time Warner Fee Standoff

The whole thing is bullshit. If I understand correctly, Fox wants more money from Time Warner, TW doesn't want to pay. Both are holding their customers hostage. What annoys me is TW makes buttloads of money from subscriptions, Fox makes buttloads of money from advertising, both of which are at the consumer's expense. Fuck all of em.

I think this is why we're all probably just itching for the day the Internet takes over for all this BS.

Yeah, but then you get Fox charging you for content on Hulu.

Personally, I think anything that convinces people to drop Time Warner is a good thing.

Re: Fox and Time Warner Fee Standoff

Ideally, I'd like to see TV sold to me straight from the production company. If I need to pay that way and they even have to sell ads as part of that, fine. I want it in the manner convenient to me when I want it, though. I also don't want where I happen to live to figure into what I can and cannot watch.

Nope, they said they have their own separate contract.

Losing it WAS the only bright side of the story in my eyes. So much for that.

Is that what you guys have in LA?

When I lived in San Diego it was Cox. In Sacramento it's Comcast.

Re: Fox and Time Warner Fee Standoff

I'm getting ready to dump TW if they continue with this, and maybe if they don't, just to save some money. My brother has been off of cable for many months now and having seen it for Xmas last week at his place, I can see how it can be a bit dull for live TV, but with so much available on streaming Netflix and Hulu and various other websites, I can't say I'm too worried about missing too much aside from sports stuff.

Yeah, we've got Time Warner now. Used to have Comcast.

Re: Fox and Time Warner Fee Standoff

I have TWC. The prospect of losing a major channel like FOX sucks... until I really think about it.

The only things I am committed to watching from FOX are House, the Sunday animation block , and the last few episodes of Dollhouse.
Obviously there are other avenues to find those shows.

If the new season of 24 isn't available to DVR, then I just won't watch it. I'll live.

It does suck that some people would be denied access to some NFL playoff games, so go to a friend's house or a bowling alley. The screen is probably bigger and it's more fun with a group anyways.

Re: Fox and Time Warner Fee Standoff

I've been hearing about this for weeks since I'm on TWC. The Local Fox affiliate isn't owned by Fox, so we wouldn't lose that. This is the first time I've heard anything about Weather Channel, Food Network etc though.

Well, I don't have Time Warner and I feel bad for those customers who will be affected by this.

Worst comes to worst, you can watch pretty much all of FOX's shows on Hulu.com like 24, Bones, House (with an 8 day delay) and all the Sunday cartoons. You will only miss American Idol.

Switched to AT&T U-Verse a few weeks ago and love it. Fuck TWC. They removed HDNet and more recently analog versions of TruTV and a few other stations we watched. Of course, my bill was not lowered but thankfully I finally got QVC in HD!

Crap, I didn't know the Food Network was involved in this. I'm probably the only one here who watches this channel, but it's one of my favorites. I'll be pissed if I can't watch the Super Chef Battle on Sunday.

I don't have TWC, but I'm probably heading to U-verse within a few days. Is it still 4 open TV streams at a time (2 of which can be HD)?

Food Network is owned by CBS. I don't know how it would be involved with this dispute.

Re: Fox and Time Warner Fee Standoff

It seems Fox could not afford to not be on TW. TW is one of the major cable companies & if their customers can't see Fox, all Fox shows just drop in the ratings. I'm sure advertisers will see that instead of 8 million (made up numbers for example) viewers, Fox shows now only get 4 million & decide to not put ads on Fox or not pay as much.

It's owned by Scripps Network*, and according to the CNN article they're also in a dispute with Time Warner.

* who might also be owned by CBS - I don't know.
