How do you feel about James Cameron's films?

i decided to revisit all of Cameron's old films (with the exception of one) over the past few weeks.

Here's how I feel about them.

The Terminator: CONTROVERSY ALERT: I've never liked this movie and still don't. Can't really explain why, but the few times I've tried to watch it, I get bored.

Aliens: Absolutely amazing. I love how he flips everything that made Alien great on it's head. It's a high point in pure sci-fi action that I don't think has ever really been topped.

The Abyss: A bit bloated, but still enjoyable. Strong performances make up the backbone of the film and it's a good example of serious sci-fi.

Terminator 2: Despite my distaste for it's predecessor, I love this movie. Furlong is arguably weak, but Linda Hamilton and Schwarzenegger are fantastic. The action holds up as thrilling as do some of the special effects.

True Lies: Worth watching once, but a "serious" slightly toned down version of Last Action Hero.

Titanic: The sheer spectacle is something Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich could only dream of pulling off without looking absurd. The story of course is the weak link, being entirely unoriginal. Performance wise, DiCaprio and Winslet's weakest work.

Re: How do you feel about James Cameron's films?

The Terminator is a pretty good movie, although it's occasionally slow.

Aliens is pretty good, although I don't love it the way many people do.

I have only seen The Abyss once and I didn't like it much, but I will be giving it another shot here within a few days.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a great action movie.

True Lies is a fun action picture, although the movie's side-story about Bill Paxton goes too far, in my opinion. Its inclusion feels inorganic and Schwarzenegger's character feels more mean than is necessary.

I haven't seen Titanic since 1998, but I don't remember having any problems with it.

One thing I think about Cameron that others don't seem to agree with is that the guy can't properly cut his movies. His theatrical cuts leave out scenes that I think are useful and worth including, but his directors cuts feel overlong and slightly bloated. I feel there's a perfect version of Aliens and Terminator 2 to be created, but neither of the four cuts between them are the right one. I also imagine I watched the Abyss DC when I watched that film, and that's the one I didn't like.

I love these:

Titanic
True Lies
The Abyss
Aliens
The Terminator

And T-2 is okay.

I really have no interest in seeing Avatar though.

I'm curious how you can love 5 of his 6 films, still like another and yet have no interest in seeing his latest. What is it about Avatar that is turning you off so much?

I like all his films for different reasons. I think his weakest in terms of story is Titanic, mostly because it tends towards cliche, but I recognize that a lot of that is just earnestness, that we don't see a lot of in film nowadays. When he is doing sci-fi action, I think he's one of the best.

Re: How do you feel about James Cameron's films?

The Terminator: I love it, don't get the slow comments. To me it's pretty relentless.

Aliens I love it too. Almost as much as the Terminator.

The Abyss is okay but not great. There are parts that are really good but as a whole it just didn't quite work.

Terminator 2: Judgment Day is pretty good, great in parts (the hospital part especially), but not quite up to the first fun for me.

True Lies: I like it ok, but it seems kind of misogynistic to me and that makes me enjoy it less. Probably James Cameron was just really pissed at women when he was making this.

Titanic I enjoyed it fine when I saw it at the theater. I still enjoyed it when I watched for a second time recently. I know a few people this is their favorite movie (not all girls either)--I don't get that at all--it's decent but it's hard for me to see it being anyone's favorite movie ever. There's some bad acting and lame characters (the Billy Zane part especially is way too one-dimensional) but the leads do a good job so the main love story ends up reasonably involving.

As far as Avatar: It's been a long time since he made a feature so that tempered my expectations a bit, then I saw the previews and I thought it looked like a video game and lost all interest in seeing it (plus my wife thought it looked like crap so I doubt she'd go with me). Some reviews have made me reconsider but we'll see.

Love his Terminators, like Aliens (still prefer the first), enjoyed True Lies although it's 20 min too long. Abyss and Titanic unfortunately haven't held up for me.

The second half of Titanic is his best movie, but Terminator 2 is probably his best overall.

Seen all but PIRANHA II and AVATAR.
Enjoyed ALIENS. Hated, hated THE ABYSS and TRUE LIES.
Indifferent to the others. I don't hate TITANIC, but I have no particular regard for it.

Re: How do you feel about James Cameron's films?

Maybe I am in the minority, but for me, The Abyss is the one I watch over and over again, more so than any of the others. It is such a good character driven love story. The scene (avoiuding spoilers here) after...er....they are swimming.....and go back to the main ship.....riveting.

And without a doubt, the diretor's cut is a must see version of this film. It really explains some of the action. Without some of these added scenes, there's a few big ambiguous plot points that seem out of place without the explanation.

If you can get your hand on the original 2-disc, you must also see "Under Pressure". This was the hour long making of doc. You will have a huge appreciation for the film after seeing that. The doc was as riveting as the movie itself.

Love 'em all, except The Abyss which is just OK in my book. Have to wait for the Blu to see Avatar as I don't go to theaters anymore

Re: How do you feel about James Cameron's films?

I never consider Cameron a director I really, really like, despite the fact that I've seen all of his films. My thumbnail description would be a director who makes visually inventive films that often lack a narrative depth. Not that that is a bad thing, necessarily.

I look forward to seeing Avatar in 3D, but I'm not expecting to discover a new religion or anything. Entertain me for a couple of hours and I'll likely walk away satisfied. The technical advancements have me much more curious than the storyline I've picked up from trailers/reviews.

The Terminator: He gets a lifetime pass for this one. It may not hold up as well from a technical standpoint today, but it remains what I consider an important film in the resurgence of the sci-fi action genre.

Aliens: Classic on all levels. My favorite Cameron, and a damn fine film.

The Abyss: I like the scenery/gadgets/characters a whole lot better than the story. This one never paid off the way I would have wanted it to.

Terminator 2: This one still has some terrific set pieces, and does a fine job continuing and connecting the storyline from the original. It does get a little cornbally ("Why do you cry?") and I was never a fan of the kindler, gentler Ahnuld Terminator.

True Lies: Fun stuff at the time, but not something I feel the need to ever revisit. Some exciting action segments wrapped in a thin comedy coating.

Titanic: A dull, overblown film with some impressive visual/technical achievements. I've never been able to understand the wide appeal for this one.

Re: How do you feel about James Cameron's films?

The Abyss was ok...don't really care for his other films I've seen.

Definitely do not like what he did with Aliens, though I love the first film.
