Original Rocketeer Returns in HC

Just a heads up for anyone interested, the Rocketeer has been re-released in two very good looking hardcovers. One is your average hardcover priced at 30 bucks and the other is an oversized version with extras (sketches, original character designs etc) at 75. I've been looking a long time for the original series and here it is. It's showing for release on Amazon for January, but came in my LCS today. Guess they are giving the comic dealers a head start on sales for this one. Great art and great story, all set in a great time period. Highly recommended.

Re: Original Rocketeer Returns in HC

Pre-ordered the regular hardcover at half-off, sight unseen.

Subsequently feeling a bit of buyers remorse, having now read the issues it contains.

Really nice artwork and a neat concept, but it just reeks of an unfinished project. It's too bad Dave Stevens couldn't have lit a fire under his ass and put out another twenty issues.

As it stands, the fifteen bucks I paid seems a bit much for what amounts to a three issue miniseries and a one-shot, never mind the thirty dollar cover price.

Re: Original Rocketeer Returns in HC

I absolutely love The Rocketeer. Have all the issues from Starslayer through Dark Horse and am lucky enough to have both graphic novels signed by Dave Stevens. I had no idea he passed away last year. That really sucks. I'll probably get this for completists sake.

Re: Original Rocketeer Returns in HC

Pulled the trigger for the deluxe version from amazon for $47.25. Maybe a bit extravagant, but I'm a long-time fan too. Also noticed that Brush With Passion looks like it's out of print. Fortunately, I've got my copy, from when it was released just last year.

Wow! 130 extra pages in the deluxe edition!

Re: Original Rocketeer Returns in HC

Received my deluxe copy from Amazon yesterday and it was even packed well...

This book is worth every penny if you are a Stevens fan. I remember very clearly reading these when they started in the back of Mike Grell's Starslayer.

The new coloring really makes Dave's art pop. All the concept stuff in the back completes the Rocketeer chapter for me.

Might even buy a few extra to hold onto if it goes out of print.

For those interested, Bud's Art Books (dot) com has Dave Stevens: Selected Sketches and Studies, Volumes 2, 3 & 4 available, including deluxe editions which are signed and numbered. They also have unsigned copies.

Re: Original Rocketeer Returns in HC

Have to second Mark's sentiments. The deluxe HC is definately the way to go if you can find it. The oversized art is amazing and the extras cover pretty much all of the Rocketeer history. Awesome awesome book.

Re: Original Rocketeer Returns in HC

I finally got around to reading through my deluxe copy. I guess I never realized as a kid just how short his Rocketeer run was. Also, from reading the extras, I didn't know that some of the work was laid out or penciled by others, and maybe just inked by Stevens.

Re: Original Rocketeer Returns in HC

I picked up the deluxe edition and am really enjoying it.

Also, I learned something from reading the introduction: Thomas Jane grew up very close to where I grew up. Now I'll have something to talk to him about if I ever meet him.

Re: Original Rocketeer Returns in HC

I'm kicking myself in the ass for not buying the Dave Stevens art book. The cover didn't really grab my attention so I put it off.

I recently found the original Rocketeer hard cover in a used book store for $2. Before that I tracked down the original Pacific run and the later Comico series.

Re: Original Rocketeer Returns in HC

Amazon got these back in stock. If you want it, you should get it now. I sold the extra copies I bought for $150 and $300 while they were out of stock. Supposedly there were only 3000 printed and IDW promised never to reprint. The ones I received today look the same as the my opened copy. Not sure if they did a reprint or not.

Got my deluxe edition the other day from Amazon. This is a great little collection. Wish there was more content, but you get what you get.

Are you sure the cheaper version is oop. Amazon pulled alot of graphic novels because of the misprice debacle. And this publisher was one of the parties involved.

I was assuming both are OOP since Amazon as well as other retailers don't have it in stock right now. Didn't know about Amazon pulling listings off because of the price debacle. Still, I don't seem to find other store that has them in stock.

I just checked and Amazon is saying that they have it in stock, looks to be both editions.
