5.1ch soundtrack

i have a problem!! hope some of u guys can help. i have the akai
dv-p2000 dvd player hooked up to a sony str-de435 reciever using 5.1ch analogue outputs becoz the sony doesn't have digital inputs. anyway the problem is that whenever i play audio cd's or special features on dvds (ie. things without a 5.1ch soundtrack) there is absolutley no bass!! my sub doesn't get used at all, but playing the dvd movie with 5.1ch soundtrack everything is fine!!
i hooked up the akai using the downmixed 2ch audio output to the cd input on the sony and it sounds great but i dont think i should have to do this!! plus it still sounds bad when i watch the extra features on dvds!
does anybody know how to fix this problem?? thanks in advance
