Right now, I have a Sony 27" TV and a Sony DVPS550D DVD player that was suggested by my friend. I want to build a system that supports both DD/DTS. I know I will need at least a receiver and a speaker set. Do I need anything else?
I only have about $1000 to spread around. Can anybody give me some suggestions? I am really really new at this. So more detailed explanation will be much appreciated.

The most important thing, of course, is the receiver. I personally own a Sony receiver, but I was told by friends at an electronics store that Yamaha makes better recievers. I recently helped a friend pick out the Yamaha RX-396(???) receiver. It isnt DTS but it does decode dolby digital, but your player already decodes this I think, so you can just use the 5.1 inputs (if your player has them). He paid $230 for the reciever and its a good investment for someone starting out. I like my sony and it decodes everything and has a lot of options...no complaints from me. Its the STRDE835 which I bought for $300. It is 100 x 5 while the Yamaha is 60 x 5. These are just my opinions. Hope they help. As far as speakers....I would go listen to some and find out what kind of sound you like. Good Luck!!!

Check out the Kenwood HTB-503, it has all the speakers you need including Subwoofer. The Reciever on it is a Kenwood VR-407, which gets great reviews, and the whole system shoudl be around $500
