So I've decided to go with either Dynaudio Audience 50's (bookshelf) or 60's (floor standing) for my main speakers in my new and improved home theater. However, they both have a nominal impedance of 4 ohms. Does this mean that I will need an amplifier that is stable to 4 ohms? I'm not exactly sure what this all means, but I know I will probably need a nice amplifier to do these speakers justice.

The units in the store were running on Krell and Mark Levinson stuff, which is way out of my league budget-wise. My main question is:

Will I need to get a separate integrated amp to drive these speakers? Or will a receiver work? I was thinking something along the lines of getting a Denon 3300 or Marantz 7000 for now, but would I need to get a seperate amp and use the receiver as a pre/pro?

The main thing you will need is an amplifier (or receiver) that produces "high current". Yes, you do need to have the amp stable into 4 ohms, or it will overheat. To the best of my knowledge, either the Marantz or the Denon receiver should work. Check with the dealer. They're usually very willing to work with you, because they know that if they make you happy now, should you ever want to upgrade, you'll be back.

Except for very cheap receivers, almost all of them can handle 4ohm speakers. If the speakers are too much of a load, the automatic protection will shut down the receiver. Unless you listen at high volume levels, the receivers you mention will be more than enough to power 4ohm speakers.

And even if you decide you need more power, most receivers in that class offer pre-amp outputs to allow the use of a seperate amp.

Just buy both sets and wire them in series for an 8 ohm load. ;-)
