I am going to purchase a reciever for my brother, and I wanted you to know if anyone could give me any information on something in the $500 range. Have been looking at the JVC RX8000 500W Dolby Digital/DTS Receiver, can get a real good deal on it, and he has JVC components. He also isn't obsessed with the whole home theater thing, but does enjoy movies. Any information would be appreciated.

I recommend the Sony DB840 or DB940 for the 500 dollar range. The 840 has 100 watts per chan, and the 940 has 110, not much of a diff. The 940 also adds a better remote (2 way/learning), and multi-room support...but that is about it. You can get them the cheapest from the Oade Brothers (oade.com)...the 840 is 415 shipped, and the 940 is somewhere around 460 shipped...hope this helps.

I have a JVC player and receiver. I kind of like the AV Compulink feature (where the two behaves like a single unit.) Something he may like.
