Starting on November 10, Barnes and Noble will be running their 50% off Criterion promotion for 2 weeks, according to multiple B&N employees.
Sale will occur online and in-store, but you can get them cheaper in-store than you can online if you are a B&N member. Here's how:
The list price for most Criterion DVD's and Blu-Rays is $40
The 50% off sale drops them to $20
Your 10% membership discount drops them to $18
And finally, this $5 coupon drops them to $13:
http://i34.tinypic.com/16lzsk9.gif
(thanks to LASERMOVIES)
(If the list price is $30, the 50% sale/10% member discount/$5 coupon will drop the price to $8.50)
The coupon can be used multiple times as long as your local B&N employees aren't sticks in the mud.
Remember, IT PAYS TO BE A B&N MEMBER, especially during this sale.
Not only that, but if you want to purchase a membership and just use it during this sale, you can get a full refund for your membership within the first month.
Happy hunting!

While I appreciate the comment, greatly in fact, I won't be able to afford that many Criterion's since I'm helping to buy a car this week and will have to spend everything I have financially saved... so I will be paycheck to paycheck for at least a while (meaning I won't be able to spend that much on movies PERIOD). I think I can afford the three I mentioned, but anything else would be pushing my luck at the moment unfortunately. I may grab the Nikkatsu Noir eclipse set too if I can't help myself. That's my limit this time. It'll actually be great if I can get all of those.
And as a side comment, this sale is arriving not that long after the first one. I'm still watching a lot of those Criterions! I honestly doubt I would order as much even if my finances were different.

Unfortunately, I cancelled mine 2 days ago before I heard of this sale because I was very unimpressed with the coupons and other "deals" they had. I was 28 days in so I called the number, clicked a few numbers on my phone, talked to a CS rep, told them I didn't feel it was worth it for me considering my buying practices and told them I wanted to cancel. She asked my name and address and walked me through some sort of paperwork they have to do and that was it. 5 minutes total.
They havn't credited my account for the $25 yet, but Im not too worried about it yet.

What are the details of the membership again?
$25 a year. There is an option to have it not automatically renew every year, so it can be a 1-time thing if you just want to keep it for a year.
The membership gives you 10% off pretty much everything they sell (including already-discounted items) other than electronics, and you get access to member-only coupons that are always available (such as the $5 coupon in the op).
For the most part, B&N is not very good for DVD/Blu-Ray deals. However, they always have a different sale running, and those sales always contain a few amazing deals. My membership has paid for itself at least a dozen times over with all the money I have saved on Criterions and various other Blu-Rays. For example, they were just running a 50% off select Blu-Ray/DVD sale where, after the member discount and $5 coupon, a few dozen different Blu-Rays came out to $6-8 each. I picked up Dogma for $8, The Universe season 1-2 for about $10 less than Amazon, and The Shield seasons 6-7 for about $20 less than Amazon.
It's definitely worthwhile to keep your membership for the sales that pop up every now and again. Look at it this way - if you buy 4 Criterions at $13 each (after member discount and member coupon), the membership will have paid for itself.

I joined up just to take advantage of this sale the last time around. I went to two stores, the first never heard of a 30-day trial. Not the cashier nor the manager (!!!). I had to point out to her on the sign up it states it there and on the website. Unfortunately I needed the receipt, which I did not have on me at the time since I figured they'd still have it on their computer, stores like Best Buy you do not need a receipt if you bought it with a credit card and it shows up on their computer.
I moved and relocated that same day. It worked without any questions at all. The cashier never heard of it, asked the manager if they had a trial, he said yes and did his thing, printed out the receipt showing the refund and I kicked my heals out the door.

I have had my membership for going on 2 years now and have never once been rejected in the dozens of times I have used those coupons at multiple different stores. Employees either don't notice or don't care about that stipulation in the coupon. I'm pretty sure their computers don't show your membership join date, which is why they always accept the coupons. Their computer automatically accepts them no matter when you joined.

There are many Criterions at B&N with stickers saying members get an extra 10% off. Will that extra 10% come into play as well or is it negated by the discs being on sale?
Maybe Trevor can answer this. I know he is quite proficient at getting the price rediculously low, in fact I think the store ends up owing him money when all is said and done.

hahah i'm seriously contemplating this too. Maybe I'll use a different credit card or not use my full name. For example write in "matt" instead of "matthew"

Here's a thought if you want to lock in The Third Man at the $13 price but you're afraid it will be OOS by the time the sale rolls around:
Go out and buy it now. Barnes and Noble has a 14-day return policy on DVD/Blu-Ray provided the product is unopened and you have the receipt. I just picked up a copy for $29.17 out the door. All I have to do is return on the 10th and get $16 back.

Criterion Blu-Rays are normally 10% off to everyone, and members get an additional 10%.
Obviously that first 10% is negated during the sale by the fact that they are 50% off...duh.

Already have a short list of must-have stuff to snag next week -- Wings of Desire, Z, Nikkatsu Noir, and hopefully the copies of Contempt and The Third Man Blu-ray that are still looming around at a local store. Possibly more, of course.

Their computer automatically accepts them no matter when you joined.
do you tend to buy one disc with the $5 off at one store...go to another, repeat, come back and do it again the next day kind of thing? or have you been able to buy one w/ the coupon...go look around, get another CSR and buy another?
There are two probably 20 minutes apart, and i'm just trying to gauge how I should work this since I will only have 2 or 3 opportunities to visit them (they are two hours from my house, but I will be in town for a conference next weekend). I went in tonight and got my membership, since I intend on getting Human Condition and hopefully a couple of other boxes to maximize the value for that. heck, three of them would get my $25 back and then some.
One thing I did notice is they did not have a single eclipse box, which was very disappointing...hopefully the other store will...and if necessary, there is another about a half hour away on the way home. But do they as a rule tend to not carry them? The counter clerk said they had the Rosselinni History Films on order...but that was it. (it's one I want though, so Huzzah!)
Sorry for the rambling, just trying to get a feeling for how this goes with the coupons and whether it's fully straight up fine or if a little surreptitious finagling is required. It would be lovely if I could go in with four coupons and the clerk just did 4 separate transactions for me :)

I went in to purchase my membership, and to test this theory. I was told that it was 3 days, as opposed to three "business days". I'm thinking this may be a case of six of one, a half dozen of the other, since B&N is open on Saturday & Sunday, thus making those days business days for them.
That said, I threw a few blu-rays on hold, including a "Third Man" disc. I suspect the dude at the music desk knew what I was up to, but was happy to play along.

Ran across this today on the B&N web site about the Criterion sale. Look for the sale to unofficially begin maybe as early as Monday afternoon at B&N.com. They often start sales a little early. Also I remember hearing about some stores marking down Criterions to 50% as early as Sunday during the last sale.
50% Off Criterion DVD Sale:
This offer ends November 24, 2009 at 2:59 am while supplies last. Save 50% Off list price on Criterion Collection DVDs and Blu-ray discs. Simply look for the "50% Off Criterion DVDs & Blu-rays - Shop Now" icon on select DVDs online at Barnes & Noble.com.
Barnes & Noble Member program discounts will apply. Shipping charges may apply.
This offer is not redeemable for cash, cash equivalents, Gift Cards or online Gift Certificates and is not valid on past purchases or purchases made from third parties accessible from the www.bn.com web site (e.g., used books, PC and video games, etc.). According to Laser's B&N thread, there aren't any % off coupons that can be used right now. So basically you'll just be getting the 50% off plus your 10% discount if you're a member. Yet another reason why it's worth going to the store for this deal :D

There is a 20% online code for first time purchases when creating a new B&N account available. You can use it over and over if you want to create multiple accounts. No membership required.
Also B&N is due for some new 10% and 15% coupons. There is a good chance they may show up Monday and get activated by mid week if they do. There also are two stackable online $5 coupons for members that could work with some titles over $20, or on a $50 order.
If you are a member don't forget free shipping is available on a $10 order until December 25. With the lower free shipping level you could go through Bing.com to earn an extra 12% cashback in addition to a members discount, any coupons, or any rewards you may earn with a credit card. So there are still other options to save extra money online.

All the offers listed on the coupon details are stackable. You can use the coupon to get one or all 5 them that are listed. However the only worthwhile offers are $5 off a CD $10 or more (price is before members discount), $5 off a DVD $20 or more, and $5 off a purchase $50 or more. If you meet the minimum requirements of the coupon and combine all three offers it will deduct $15 off your order. Also if you place the order through Bing.com you can earn an extra 12% off in cashback. However it is important to note that pre-orders are not eligible, and you must have a B&N membership purchased before or between the dates listed on the coupon. The online coupon is also valid on only one purchase for each members account.

OTOH, seeing that I spent around $300 on Criterions last time, I will limit myself to getting the Nikkatsu Noir and Mizoguchi boxes plus Wings of Desire.
I think this is what I'll do but Z instead of wings of desire for the time being. now, what is the best way to go about it for non-members? I thought about getting a memership but I rarely buy from b&n so it doesn't seem like the best option.

Just put in my first order on B&N.com using the new member coupons. Ordered Ingmar Bergman Four Masterworks and Dazed and Confused. The pricing seems a bit weird looking at the order description post-purchase. Im not sure what coupons were attributed to what, but the prices are listed after discounts are applied
Ingmar Bergman Four Masterworks: $36.54
Dazed and Confused: $16.44
Sales Tax: $3.58
Total: $56.56
Ill be using that in-store coupon tomorrow as well but they don't have the masterworks near me.

I don't believe so. This image appears next to the DVDs already on-sale:
They very well may change that image tomorrow, but that's what's up there currently.
Ah good point, site is probably just late on updating.
Can anyone give any input into Pierrot Le Fou and Wages of Fear? I've heard good things but I'm not sure. Pierrot Le Fou would be my first foray into Jean-Luc Godard but I've always been a fan of french new wave films.

I'll be honest:
I was all set to love Pierrot le Fou, but had to eject it after 30 minutes because it was just plain unwatchable. I've sat though all sorts of hard-to-watch films, including Battlefield Earth and even Godard's own Made in USA. But this one...just not entertaining.
I know I will be flamed for this on this board, but thought I'd let it out.

Wages of Fear is an amazing film. I'd say top 3 Criterions ever. I absolutely love it. It's one of the most thrilling suspense films ever made. Some say The Hurt Locker is intense, well they haven't seen Wages of Fear.

Why did you eject it? Was it just not moving along quick enough? Nothing much happening in the first 30 mins?
Can we throw out suggestions in our posts? I wasn't able to find an "Essential Criterion" thread but I'd love to throw in some suggestions if anyone is just getting into Criterions. I myself have a lot to learn and don't necessarily know which ones are "essential." I will throw in these to the essential list:
The Third Man (OOP but in stock at BN.com)
Seven Samurai
The Seventh Seal
Rashomon
Le Haine

I think that Wages of Fear has much more universal appeal than Pierrot Le Fou. I love both films, but I could also understand someone not liking Pierrot Le Fou. I think if you don't know anything about Godard (and have never watched his films) then it's difficult to argue for a blind buy. Again, I love both, but it certainly isn't a fit for everyone's tastes.

It wasn't fun to watch. It wasn't enriching to watch. It didn't even look as good as most Godard films, IMO.
And when Anna Karina started to do the extremely offensive Vietnamese impersonation, I said "Hell no!" and ejected this sad excuse of a film.

Does anyone know if the $5 off in-store coupon is different from the online code T8X7V7N $5 off?
I noticed that the T8X7V7N would not apply to anything with the selling price of under $20 (after the 50% Criterion discount). It seems the code does not base off the list price, but off the actual price you are paying.
Will that same scenario occur when using the $5 off in-store coupon when the item is below $20 with the Criterion 50% sale?
Thanks!

That's how the coupon is designed to work online. The DVD must have a selling price of $20 or more before a members discount to deduct the $5. Sadly that means the $19.99 titles will not activate the discount because it is a penny short of $20.
However it is an entirely different matter with the store coupons. I never had too many problems getting B&N stores to accept the printable version of the coupon. You should at least be able to use it for the Criterions listing for $39.99, and even possibly $29.99 list before the 50% sale and 10% members discounts.
If you read the fine print on the coupon it mentions a minimum $20 selling price, but defines selling price as the price at the cash register before discounts and taxes are applied. They scan at list before the discounts. So technically you can interpret the list as the selling price.

I have used the $5 coupon plenty of times in-store for titles that were on sale for $10, because their list price was over $20. So no, you shouldn't have any trouble using it in-store.

No AAA's 10% and B&N's 10% membership discounts do not combine. If you have a B&N membership there is really no reason to go through AAA link for the purchase. You could have gone through Bing to get 12% cashback along with the 10% B&N member discount, and or any coupon discount since they all stack. Also if you have a B&N membership there is a larger selection of coupons to choose from since you are able to use both member and non-member coupons that are available.

w/ all the other discounts available, you shouldn't pay anything close to 50% off msrp in this sale...that's why it is so awesome. this is BETTER than BOGO...getting $59.95 msrp sets for $21 is far better than BOGO - where those sets are $50-55 to begin with.

*edit* It finally worked after about 8 log-in attempts through AAA Hawaii. Very glitchy or something.

I got the Olivier Shakespeare set online using AAA discount and new member 20% = $31.02 total. I figure I'll wait until they straighten out the online site for Blu-Rays...or just hit a local store tomorrow and see what's left on the shelves. --Peter

In store let me use the coupon twice on one visit: Pierre le Fou (blu) and Human Condition for $47. Pretty great deal.
