Hey, I'm new to these boards and was brought here by the excitement of the Criterion sale. I'm thinking about getting John Cassavetes - Five Films but am a bit reluctant since it would be a blind buy.

Either way, the best deal for buying it seems to be as follows:
50% off $124.99 = $62.49
10% for membership off $62.49 = $56.24
20% coupon for new account off $56.24 = $44.99

Does this seem to be the route for the most savings?

Kind of a crazy question, but is Cassavetes really as legendary/god-like as I've read? I love writers/directors like Richard Linklater and am quite ashamed that I haven't seen anything by Cassavetes, who from what I've read is a pioneer of American independent film.

I'm not a member of B & N but am still gonna pick up 3-4 blu's at $20/pop since it's still the best criterion deal

Definitely... they are just as good as the european art movies of that era, but very 'american' and 'real', no BS about them

Picked up 6 blu-rays so far for $14.01 w/tax each. Hopefully the blu-rays online will be eventually included in the sale so I can pick up a few I couldn't find.

Several stores told me I could order anything while in the store to be delivered to my house and get the sale price.

Of course having 6 BN stores within 20 miles of my house helps if I run into any issues. :-)

w/ all the other discounts available, you shouldn't pay anything close to 50% off msrp in this sale...that's why it is so awesome. this is BETTER than BOGO...getting $59.95 msrp sets for $21 is far better than BOGO - where those sets are $50-55 to begin with.

why does someone here always have to figure out a way to complain about a sale?

I wasn't complaining, just pointing out that it wasn't really a BOGO. Why do some people here always try to interpret others as complaining? ;)

Much of these additional discounts are contingent on being a B&N member, though, right?

I'm seeing a lot of the older cardboard packaging on the blu-rays. Aren't all new runs of the previously released blu-rays going to be in plastic pacakaging (e.g. Last Year at..., Bottle Rocket)?

Only one I've seen is Third Man. I've read elsewhere the others wouldn't be available until sometime this month. So maybe they are still not ready yet... Or B&N is not getting much new stock on the older titles as there are already plenty in stock?

That is an amazing deal. Just to make sure I'm getting this right...after the 50% discount, you are getting another 10% member discount and then using the $5 off coupon as much as you want?

I thought the coupon mentioned by the OP was only good on movies over $20.00. Is your Barnes & Noble letting you have $5 off $19.99 movies?

The Last Wave
The Third Man
Ace in the Hole

Any other suggestions based on what I already have/want to get?

Cassavetes is great. Definitely get Five Films and I recently got Husbands, which is amazing too. He is certainly the real deal. His son is a pretty good filmmaker as well.

And yes they are some of the best DVDs ever.

In store they ring up at 20.00 (or 19.99 off). I use a coupon for each one. I visited 4 stores and in 2 of them I used 2 coupons. 1 store did separate transactions, another did 1 transaction. The other 2 store where I only bought 1 did not have a second title I wanted.

Since I have 6 stores near me it's not big deal to run around a bit. Will go back to the store just down the street tomorrow for a couple more.

if you like the feel of George Washington, buy Days of Heaven

if you like Kicking and Screaming, get Metropolitan and/or Last Days of Disco... or maybe even Mike Leigh's 'Naked', as it's an investigative, dialogue-based film based on protagonizing a possible antagonist. oh, and Kicking and Screaming references films from Samuel Fuller and Jean Renoir - so maybe pick up Shock Corridor, Naked Kiss, White Dog, Grand Illusion, and DEFINITELY Rules of the Game

and perhaps complete your Wes Anderson collection with Rushmore and Bottle Rocket.

I would suggest the Killers set...two movies for the price of one! And you seem to like more noirish stuff so that's a must. Naked City is excellent too...really any of the Jules Dassin stuff is great (Thieves Highway, Night and the City, Brute Force) and I personally liked the very stripped down Blast of Silence.

check the Fuller stuff too, you'd probably like Pickup on South Street, and his eclipse box is a steal!

Purchased a membership in store yesterday and tried to complete an online order just now but kept getting "Invalid Number" when I tried to register the account. Aggravation was setting in supremely.
Finally a CSR checked and said it takes 24-48 hours to be available for online use. Well, I plan on going to the store later anyway to return a CD.

What's with the in store pricing for CDs. The one I bought had a price sticker of $16.99 but according to bn.com lists for $13.99 and is discounted off that.

You guys with the multiple coupon success in-store are lucky - at mine they told me they had a "smart coupon" system that would prevent any non-allowable usage. And were quite clear about the single-use rule. So I tried to use the $5 off a DVD plus the $5 off a $50 purchase - and their "smart" system said... "Coupon not on file" to both. Hah! A manager came over and eventually got them to work. I did have to help them a bit with their reading ability as they both misread the restriction the first time - not stackable with other coupons, except for the other ones in the offer, which of course they are. I think anything else will be online.

Edit: Oops, forgot to mention I picked up the Eisenstein Sound Years set (Alexander Nevsky + Ivan The Terrible) and The Double Life of Veronique.

I bought a membership during the last sale. Also I'm a AAA member but the 10% only works online most of the time.

Only bad thing about this sale is that the closet B&N to me is about 40 miles away in Eugene,Or.They closed the one in Salem and one or the stores up by Portland doesn't care any DVD's(movies).

Anyways I'm renting more Criterions now before I buy.

First order
This Sporting Life
The Ruling Class
Double Suicide (only blind buy)

I will list my top 20 or so Criterions latter.

Complete success for me in the store. The two blu-rays I had on hold since last week were still behind the counter, gathering dust. So I got those for $13 each - no trouble at all using multiple coupons - so I went back for more! (I was prepared with 8 coupons, but only used 5 this time.) Five $40 Criterions for $13 each. VERY cool. Very tempting to get out the credit card and just go nuts. Must resist...!

Many of you may want to use the $5 off $50 coupons, in conjunction with the $5 off one title coupons, on orders of 3 or more titles (or two high price titles). Examples could include those:

far from a store, or with limited trips available
with stores where they allow one use only
wanting to get a lot of titles without the hassle of multiple trips
music fans who are using the $5 of a $10+ CD as well

My plan is to do the following a once or twice a week:

Buy one Christmas CD $10+ and use the $5 music coupon.
Buy one $40 BD or DVD for $13 after $5 DVD coupon.
Buy one Eclipse box set for whatever price, and use the $5 off $50 total coupon.

Today, I got the $70 Nikkatsu Noir boxset for $46, with a Blu-ray and $13 CD for free. :) The boxset is $60 new at Amazon, almost $50 used.

This is my plan for an online order.

Complete Monterey Pop Blu-Ray: $70-35-3.50-5=$26.50
Another Criterion Blu-Ray: $40-20-2-5=$13
Music CD (GWAR: Lust in Space): $12-1.20-5=$5.80

Approx $45 - 12% cash back + taxes and free shipping. Should be around $42 when all is said and done. Better than in store 'cause of the cash back from Bing. Just need them to correct the sale prices for Blu-Ray, hopefully they do so soon.

All the new member coupons including $5 off $50 and $5 off $20 DVD are stackable. In fact *I THINK* that's the only way to use the coupons online as the code is only good for one order.

How are you taking off $5 from both?

He said that it was his plan. I also thought that the $5 off $20 coupon wouldn't work on the $40 titles online like it does in-store. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

BTW, thanks for the info, Trevor. I didn't realize that you can stack the $5 off of $50 with the $5 off of $20 coupons. Looks like I'm going to have to repurchase the 3 Blu-rays that I had bought today.

At the local store I had an $80 and a $40 (MSRP) set - but after all the discounts and the $5 off one dvd set, the total was a couple bucks under $50 so the $5 off $50 coupon wouldn't go on - helpfully they have a "donate a kid's book" program going, so I tossed in a book to kick it over $50, got the extra $5 off, felt good about myself. :)

The way I presented it was a little misleading. The $5 off CD comes off the CD. The $5 off DVD comes off the Monterey Pop Set. The $5 of $50 comes off the entire order.

Sorry for the confusion. And to be sure, it's still all in theory since the website prices are not correct yet. I'll be sure to update when/if successful.

To me Chungking Express, The Seventh Seal, and The 400 Blows are all essentials. Kagemusha is a great film as well and I plan to pick it up myself during this sale. I hated the Blu-ray presentation of The Last Emperor which greatly diminished my experience with the film (which I found disappointing). The Third Man was reasonably good but I found it to be over-rated personally. I've never seen Playtime. Overall, I'd say you did great.

Be glad you didn't buy Last Year at Marienbad. I despise that film.

I hated the Blu-ray presentation of The Last Emperor which greatly diminished my experience with the film....I agree. I wouldn't spend one dime on the current release, Blu-ray, or otherwise.

As another member in another thread put it, "I'll buy the movie when they decide to glue the sides back on".

All the new member coupons including $5 off $50 and $5 off $20 DVD are stackable. In fact *I THINK* that's the only way to use the coupons online as the code is only good for one order.

I realize that those two coupons are stackable online (having already used them myself for the Ingmar Bergman Mastworks set and Dazed and Confused), but the poster that I was commenting on seemed to say that he/she was able to use a $5 off a $50 purchase and a $5 off of a $20 DVD for 2 DVDs IN STORE because he/she stated that they asked the person at the register to at least try to scan both coupons in the same transaction (and it worked!). The $5 off of $50 coupon states that the coupon can only be redeemed on transactions of $50 dollars or more after all other discounts (but before taxes) are applied. The Last Days of Disco and The Ice Storm would add up to around $31 dollars (or $26 if he/she managed to coerce the clerk into scanning the $5 off a $20 DVD twice.) which is short of the $50 limit, obviously.

I don't know If Im interpreting this wrong but I only ask because I wouldn't mind going back and making another purchase if the $5 off of $50 coupon (which would apparently stack with the other coupon) worked as long as the original (MSRP) prices added up to $50.00

Hey thanks. I'm no fan of altering film after the fact- I think I'll exchange Last Emperor for a quality release and hold off seeing the flick till its properly restored to its original OAR (which, I have to believe, will happen someday)

As for Criterions to despise, Im sure I'll be heckled for this one, but I'll nominate Roman Polanski's Repulsion. It should have been renamed "Boredom""- I just couldn't finish it (and the only other film I can call truly boring that I have seen would be the Julianne Moore film "Safe"- Criterion, leave that one alone)

I'm trying to get Christmas shopping done early this year and this Criterion sale is definitely helping.

For my brother, I'm getting Unfaithfully Yours. He should like that.

However, I'm unsure about my younger sister, who is 13. I'm trying to get her into good movies. I was wondering about Monsoon Wedding. Anyone seen it? Are there a lot of subtitles? I'm trying to ease her in slowly and don't want her to complain about reading too much (but I doubt she would). What's the tone of the movie like?

Also, for myself, I want to get Stranger than Paradise. My only hesitation is that it will be a blind buy.

I've read about the movie and have obviously heard great things. I really like dialogue based movies but am wondering if this one just meanders a bit too much for my taste. Are the characters compelling? Is anything compelling? From what I understand, it's a bit of a meditation on aimlessness and boredom. That's fine with me as long as there is something keeping my interest.

I'm trying to think of other movies I've seen and liked that might be similar. I really liked Linklater's Tape, which is all dialogue and in one room. I like anything Linklater, who I understand was influenced by 80s indie, but realize he is much more mainstream.

I think it's hilarious, but my sense of humor runs to the deadpan and the dry. Nothing really "happens", in the traditional sense of the word, but it's certainly not a particularly avant-garde or difficult film. If you enjoyed Slacker, this would probably be up your alley. Did you see/like Down By Law? Stranger than Paradise, to oversimplify, is a 90-minute version of the first section of that film. For $13.64, I'd say it's worth the blind buy. Even if you don't care for it, the resale value on Amazon ought to get you your $13.64 back. The same cashier who rang me up yesterday was in again today, and once again I used 3 $5 coupons on one order. Umberto D, Stray Dog and Throne of Blood for $36.66. I'm tempted to return after lunch, but I'm worried this same guy will start to question all of these $5 coupons. I'll probably wait a couple of days.

Im a UK Criterion collector so was going to stick an order in online, not a member of B&N but was going to order a few Blu-Rays and then use to 20% off one item coupon.

Then I realised my parents are actually going to be in the US for the next 10 days, so decided to postpone my online order and ask for some advice here.

You think its work me simply ordering online, or should I get them to pick some up instore and bring them back? Obviously I will save on postage by doing this, but am unsure if it actually works out better- as I am not sure about the instore coupon policy, and the way adding tax to a purchase works!

They are arriving in Boston, spending a few days there (West Springfield, if I remembered that correctly) and are then heading to New York for 5 days. We dont have Barnes and Noble stores in the UK, but the impression I get is that these are a pretty big retailer? Should I ask my parents to nip into one of the stores, should it be fairly easy to come across one?

There are a number of BN stores in Boston, including a couple in high-traffic tourist areas: one on Newbury Street near the Filene's outlet and a much larger one in the Prudential Center shops/mall.

West Springfield isn't exactly Boston. It's further west than Worcester. You might check into some outlets there.

Yes. At least one. It wasn't with the others but it was on the big display facing the metal detector/entrance to the section. I was going back to grab it but didn't have to because there was another one in the Criterion sale section they set up. There were also Criterions still in the standard blu-ray section as well ... so the stuff is kinda spread out.

At my store there is under ten Criterion Blu's in total. It seems like most stores have more than that. Anyway, The Third Man was there and that's what I really wanted since its OOP. Everything else can be had in future sales.

You should be able to reserve it online at your local store. I did that during the last sale on several OOP Criterions I wanted.

I have 7 items in my cart on B&N.com (decided to remove Complete Monterey Pop). All titles are 19.99, shipping is about $17 (to Canada), and tax is about $7.00. I used a coupon code for $5 off an order over $50 (tried to calculate if I'd save anything by splitting the order in two, but because of shipping, I'd only save $1 (IF I can even use the code twice... not sure)

A membership is out of the question since I'd only be saving $17 (membership is $25).

I want to complete the order... but I can't bring myself to click the button. What's wrong with me?

There are a number of BN stores in Boston, including a couple in high-traffic tourist areas: one on Newbury Street near the Filene's outlet and a much larger one in the Prudential Center shops/mall.

West Springfield isn't exactly Boston. It's further west than Worcester. You might check into some outlets there.

There is a BN store in Holyoke and if they are in staying in West Springfield they should be 5-10 minutes from this store depending on where they are staying exactly.

Thanks a lot for the info guys. Prices in store will match the prices online wont they?

Last time I was able to order Criterions that were online only, that the store did not carry. I was able to still use the coupon on those orders.

What I'm wondering, these coupons for $5 off a $10 CD, if I would also to be able to reuse these constantly like the $5 ones for the DVDs? Their online prices for CDs are like $5-$8 cheaper than their in store prices. If that's the case, I can order 2 Cds to get the free shipping on orders over $25 and end up paying like $7 for each CD. Anyone try this yet?

No hassle at the Westport, CT store using the 5 dollar off coupon or even using it multiple times.

I picked up

btw, Westport still had two The Third Man (Blu-ray) in stock after I left.

ctyankee spotted a couple of copies this afternoon at the Westport store. If you decide to make the trip from Hartford, you should call and reserve it before leaving.I am visiting family in Fairfield on Friday, so I put one on hold. I just need to make sure they have the keep case and not the stupid digipack....

ctyankee: Can you confirm keep case on remaining stock?

I do have a reserved keep case copy on hold at the Enfield store if Westport doesn't come through, but that is a hike I'd like to avoid.

A $40 title will end up costing $13 + sales tax.

Many Kurosawa's
Videodrome
The Life Aquatic w/ Steve Zissou

I will be going back to pick up many, don't have my membership yet and need to print off those $5 coupons.

Dang, tried a second B&N in a northern Denver suburb and not only was their selection pretty meager, they too were quite insistent that I couldn't use the coupons other than their stated one-time-only restriction. Still, got Marienbad and the Human Condition plus a CD, used 3 coupons, saved $15 extra. The $80 + $40 (MSRP) combo plus $5 coupon gets you to $48.99 as I think others may have noted, so be ready to toss in at least another $1.01 to add the $5 off $50 coupon. As a bonus, had to go by 2 different Big Lots to get to that store, and one of them had a rather massive new display of mostly the same old stuff.

Because I just haven't bought enough DVDs at discount lately.

The Third Man BD just showed back up online as available. I picked up a copy today at my B&M, and, even though it is a little banged up, I don't want to go through the hassle of ordering online and then dealing with a return, coupon, etc.

Anyway, I hope some of you are able to get a copy after seeing this.

Be glad you didn't buy Last Year at Marienbad. I despise that film.

I was excited to watch this film a while back, but when I saw this man I was very disappointed. I had no idea what was going on in this film. It's only like 90 minutes but it seemed far longer.

That pisses me off, I waited when it was supposed to go on sale on Tuesday and now they mark it down at some random time and now I can't get it.

I would just have the store order it and hope it comes before the 23rd. That's what I did with the Wings of Desire Bluray that was out of stock at the BN I frequent.

A membership is out of the question since I'd only be saving $17 (membership is $25).

Kagemusha (BD)

To anyone who took advantage of B&N's last 50% Criterion sale:

Do they restock in-store or just let them all sell until the end of the sale? I was really hoping to get Metropolitan and my local B&N didn't have it. Is there a chance they'll get it before the sale ends?

I was able to get Days of Heaven, 3 Women, and Stranger than Paradise tonight for $13 a piece. The lady who rang me up wasn't going to let me use the $5 off coupon at first. I then told her a small fib and said that they had let me do it before. At that, she called her manager and he said it was fine.

I really wanted to get Hoop Dreams but she wouldn't allow that since it rang up under $20. Oh, well...3 out of 4 isn't bad.

Scanned thread, may have missed it, but for those contemplating a substantial purchase, BN.com is offering a free $10 gift certificate if you buy $100 in gift cards. The promo is plainly spelled out on the gift card page at BN.com. The deal does not require a coupon code. The gift cards are mailed to you (site says ship in 1-2 days---that should be time enough to receive them before the sale ends. One catch: the $10 GC is emailed to you, but not until Dec. 26th.

Pretty sure none of the usual discounts (AAA, BN membership, BN coupons) will apply to gift card purchases. But, if you use the B&N cashback link at FW when you buy the cards, you do get 8% back on your $100 gift card purchase---so after that and the $10 GC, your net is $118 worth of credit at Barnes & Noble for a cash outlay of $100.

Bing offers an even bigger 12% cashback at B&N, but not on purchases of gift cards. (Not sure, but you might be able to get 12% via Bing if you redeem the giftcards online---YMMV on that).

Nikatsu Noir $31.49 - $5 = $26.49

O Brother Where Art Thou CD $10.97 - $5 = $5.97

if there are any Grand Rapids, MI patrons here just thought i'd relate my experience tonight:

At Rivertown crossings there's an older guy who is the only one i've ever seen in the DVD section. He looked at the coupons like they were the strangest thing he'd ever seen, called a manager over, and he acted like he'd never seen them before either. reading the fine print he said "well you're only supposed to use one, but we'll let you use two today as a courtesy" - it was rather uncomfortable standing there while they both looked them over like I was trying to scam them or something...i just said "go to the BN website - they're right there in the in store coupon page"...bottom line is I got Human Condition and Wages of Fear blu for $46 out the door...so if you are heading there, I would only plan on one coupon per visit.

At the Woodland Mall store on 28th st. there was an 18ish kid running the register and he called over his 24ish hot hipster chick manager and she just said "run them as separate transactions...i'm going on break" - and he did three of them for me with no problem...Vengeance is Mine and Heaven Can Wait (xmas for the wife) for $9.01 after tax and Before the Rain for $13.78 - Needless to say i'll be returning to this store a few times since they also carry nearly the entire collection as far as I could tell. Found at least one of every eclipse set and every other box set.

I can see how this is pretty much the most dangerous case of dvd crack I've seen since the late 90s. Criterions for nine bucks? I got a blu ray, 3 discs, and Human condition for the price of Human Condition on Amazon....that's simply insane. And I get paid Friday. I'm going to have to exercise some serious restraint.

They've been saying it should last two weeks, which would have it end at 3am on 11/24. That's how they did the sale last time, anyway.

Gomorrah is the last title I'm really gunning for as well, so I'm really hoping it all works out. This is exactly how I ordered Repulsion during the last sale, purchasing it between 12:00 and 3:00 am for the discounted price. I saw somebody saying they ordered it mid-sale for the sale price, but I distinctly remembering waiting on pins and needles to see if the price would drop in time to order it.

This month's newsletter actually mentioned this and specifically stated the 11/24 releases would NOT be part of the sale:

BARNES & NOBLE 50% OFF SALE

Starting November 10, all Criterion Collection titles will be 50% off the list price at Barnes & Noble, both in stores and online. BRD Trilogy Box
Third Man

for $53 and change shipped. Used AAA 10% discount stacked with $5 off $50 non-member coupon. Saw that some people had trouble logging in for the AAA discount yesterday, but it worked fine for me on the first try.

I see there are new account coupons out there that offer 20% off one item, which would be nice to get, but I don't know if I want to start up another account right now. I've got three running already from the last sale. Could drop my per-disc average down another $1.50-$2.00...hmmmm...

The military.com bookstore discount is only 6% off on DVDs, and does not stack with a members discount. If you have a B&N membership the 10% members discount would apply along with the free shipping offer. However It does currently say it is 10% on the web page but that is misleading since the offer applies to books and not DVDs.

I just got back from a B&N and the damn lady wouldn't let me use the $5 off on each DVD.The coupon does in fact state the $5 is to be applied after all other discounts so after 50% off and another 10% I don't see how anyone is getting away with this?
What am I and the cashier missing ?

I was lucky that she took the $5 dollar off $50 purchase ...she at first didn't want to do that.

I suggest reading the fine print of the coupon and how it defines the selling price at the cash register. Evidently the cashier was only reading the first sentence how the $5 off is applied. The selling price is the price at the cash register before taxes and discounts are applied.

Not only is The Third man no longer in stock once again, they seem to have removed the listing from the search. I still have this just because it was in my cart so I still have the link to it:

http://btobvideo.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?EAN=715515033824&x=27141211

You can't do the in store search for it anymore, and not only that but when you go to the DVD version they don't have the link to the BD version listed there either.

For now on I will stick to ordering online at least I get BING cash back for that.

I had something similar happen to me the last time during the last criterion sale. I went to a BN and tried to use a$5 coupon on Kicking and Screaming. The cashier wouldn't accept it; so they got the manager I tried to get them to read the entire coupon and apply the discount. But they still wouldn't and they claimed their computer would only accept one discount(the 50%off one), he even tried to convince me I was getting a good deal. I just left and won't be going there again. Luckily there's another bn that accepts that coupon and I have used it more than once. So it definitely is YMMV on the coupon.

Oh you bastard. I was at Rivertown last night and couldn't find "The Human Condition"! Ugh. lol.

I did pick up five others though:

- Homicide
- Science Is Fiction (not sure if I'm going to keep this one)
- The Last Days of Disco
- The Seventh Seal (Blu-ray)
- Monsoon Wedding (Blu-ray)

Each of those was $13.xx including tax.

Also ordered "The Third Man" (Blu-ray) from BN.com for $15.xx. Hoping it comes in the plastic case, so it matches the other two I picked up, also in plastic cases.

Still interested in trying to find the Cassavetes set, as well as The Human Condition maybe.

i put it on hold sunday night :)

did the guy give you any guff about using 5 coupons?

Online orders are shipped incredibly fast! I ordered my Cassavettes set (for a cool $44.99) at around 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday and got it at 12:30 p.m. today. That's crazy considering post offices were closed yesterday for Veteran's Day.

Yes, they do come fast. Although the free delivery is supposed to be three business days max, I don't think it ever took the maximum during the last sale. For that one, I had boxes streaming in for a week or so via UPS. My wife thought I was crazy (as she always does when DVD sales roll around lol).

I got Monsoon Wedding, Kagemusha, Pierrot le fou and Wings of Desire for $15.93 each with 3 day expedited shipping absolutely free. Being a non-member, i couldn't have asked for more.

Tips:
1. Use military URL - http://www.bn.com/military. When prompted later choose "Personal use". This will take 10% off and give you free 3 day expedited shipping
2. Create a brand new account. This is a pain but the coupon in next step requires it.
3. Enter coupon - F4B9F7R . Gives you 20%. Order 1 title per order for maximum benefit.

Enjoy

A BIG thank You for posting this info! I didn't have the time yet to figure out which coupons would work out best for non-members, and I really don't want to get a membership right now. I ordered Kagemusha late last night and it has shipped already. I'll probably pick up 5 or 6 more now!

If you change your search criteria to "All Products" in the search pulldown menu (instead of Movies and TV) and type in "Thrid Man Criterion", the Blu Ray listing will still show up. You can't order it, of course, but it is handy if you want to check for availability of store inventory.

I've noticed before that B&N will remove an OOP DVD/Blu Ray title from the "Movie and TV" search, but it still shows up if you search for it in "All Products".

I absolutely hate inconsistent practices within the same store regarding using multiple coupons. On Monday I bought Mamma Roma and Bicycle Thieves using two coupons. The employee was super nice, took both coupons without question. I was happy. Go back there today and a different dude gives me shit about using two coupons for Amarcord and The Lady Vanishes. I try and play dumb, asking "Oh will two coupons not scan?", to which he replies "No they will. I just can't accept two coupons". I felt like asking him the hours he will be working for the next week. I just don't see the problem in taking two coupons, it's not like the difference is coming out of your paycheck, buddy.

I wouldn't be upset at any employee refusing to honor a coupon. They're just doing their job, and technically, few, if any, of us really qualify for the coupons.

That said, if B&N really wanted to limit multiple uses, it would be insanely easy to do so. Pretty much every other chain/site has their system allow one use per person. Heck, B&N's own website only allows one use. So they must make a small profit even at $13 per Criterion, and by inaction want all the sales.

Again, if they denied me every time I wouldn't be upset. But I'll try the coupons every time I drive by one of their stores.

Agreed, why rock the boat? We should consider ourselves lucky to be able to use the coupon more than one time. There are lots of things they could implement that would prevent this great deal. We know the terms, they are printed on the coupon.

Got stonewalled at the South Hills (Pittsburgh) BN.

At first I was going to get 4 individual discs and the Makavejev Eclipse, but thought better about it and only went up with two discs, figuring I didn't want to turn into that guy if I got denied. The clerk spent about five minutes reading the fine print - seriously - and then said I could only use it once. Period. She even specified one per account. I was like, "nah, you got that wrong cuz I'll be back tomorrow!" Or what I really said which was "okay, thank you. Just these two." I'll go back tomorrow morning, get the Makavejev and call it a sale, me thinks. Though I do still want Monsoon Wedding in Blu.

I got the two I really wanted anyway. Z and Last Days of Disco. I can finally ditch the Disco VHS tape.

Maybe the teenagers will be working tomorrow. I love it when the teenagers work.

Confirmed use of the 25% off in store. Picked up Rohmer's Six Moral Tales for $36 and some change out the door. I think the cashier (who has seen way too much of me lately) was relieved to get a new coupon, but stunned that I was taking their big ticket item for 65% regular price. I've only had them give me grief once on a coupon and it wasn't that they didn't want to take it, just that the cashier didn't know how to do it. For the most part, they're pretty cool about it, but I only try one movie at a time.

I probably mentioned this last sale, but it's interesting how many of us bargain hounds, who refuse to pay more than $5 for a DVD, will gladly pay almost triple that for a Criterion.

I think they're easily worth it, giving the amount of excellence Criterion puts into their releases, coupled with their customer service, and, for me, the collectibility aspect of them.

For those of you who want a DVD or Blu-ray that is sold out. Ask them if they can place an order for you at the store. You pay on the spot, but they mail it to your house. In doing so, you will be able to use the $5 off coupon. Granted you need to get over $25 total to get free shipping, but if there's a book or something else you want, this is one way around it.

The rest of the series isn't as naturalistic as the first but all are more than worthy. I feel that Love on the Run is possibly the greatest conclusion to a series I've ever seen. The box also includes Antione and Colette which is worth the price of the box alone.
