good I guess if you missed the TRU or Amazon deals or have GCs to burn

Well, their timing stinks. I wonder if they'll ring things up differently so you could return two and end up with a $40 game? If not, it's a good deal for people who want Ratchet & Clank, Forza 3 and Tekken 6 since they all come out next Tuesday.

I'm guessing that the people that don't like the timing have it have their eyes on a game(s) that come out after this deal.

I hoping to score some more Wii games or mix and match them with Xbox 360 games.

Sweet, this is great timing. Just got Borderlands today as a gift. I'll keep it sealed until Sunday, put in $60 more and get two more games. Maybe FIFA 10 and Smackdown or Demon's Souls. Or Metroid Prime Trilogy. Or a placeholder for Dragon Age or Modern Warfare 2. Hmmmm.

No, only on games $59.99 or less. As far as I know, DJ Hero only comes in the bundled set (game + turntable controller), which makes sense.

I just don't understand why it would matter though. I mean, as long as the free game $59.99 or less... right?

I'd be getting DJ Hero $119.99 + another game at $59.99 ... and then a free one at $59.99 or less. No?

Probably not, but I would ask a manager when you go in to buy your games. A manager with common sense (they do exist, right? ;)) would allow it since you're basically spending an extra $60. It can't hurt to ask.

Yea, I'll give it a shot. Any person in their right mind would see how it should be allowed.

How often does TRU do these sales? I want to wait and grab Uncharted 2, Arkham Asylum, and Assassin's Creed II. ACII doesn't come out until November 17th though, so I'm trying to figure how long the wait will be versus picking a different game now and just picking up ACII separately.

Decker

What's wrong with the timing?

The week after the TRU sale means I already picked up what I want (except R&C) and have just spent a fortune on games. If this sale was like a month later, I could get stuff like L4D2, MW2, Lego RB, etc and I would have had a little spending break in between.

TRU does its sale once a year (though they used to have a console-specific one at some other time during the year). The Best Buy one is brand new.

Why doesn't everyone who just bought a game from there within the past few weeks just go back in, rebuy the game (along with whatever other two they want), and then just return this new sealed copy on their original receipt?
As long as you are within an allowed 30 day time frame for returns, this is perfectly legitimate...a copy is a copy is a copy, I still don't understand why I have sometimes seen some people online act like the disc they bought a week or two ago has to be the one specifically returned, as if it is unique or something to the original purchase....

...Or a placeholder for Dragon Age or Modern Warfare 2. Hmmmm.

Placeholders work in the TRU sale, but I'd suspect that BB does it differently, where each item rings up at $40 so a placeholder would only net you a $40 credit on a game released later (i.e. no discount). Also BB can sometimes be a real pain and insist that items bought as a "bundle" be returned as such so if even one game gets opened, you're stuck with all three.

Fandango
10-22-09, 03:36 AM
Well the timing is perfect for me seeing as how TRU didn't even carry Demon's Souls or Fallout 3 GOTY.

I'm guessing that Best BUy had a bunch of people pricematching the Toys R Us sale last week and are deciding to get in on the action to drive their own sales.

But yes, the timing stinks as I can't drop that kind of money two weeks in a row, even though there are 3 more games I'd want to get.

My BB rang up my pricematch last week with two full price games and a freebie. I made sure that the game I was def keeping rang up as the freebie. They were more than happy to oblige and actually suggested I do it that way if I wasn't sure I was keeping the two others.

I think that is exactly how it will work. Each game will ring up as $40 and if you go to return or exchange one, you will only have $40 in credit.

I bought a cordless phone a couple of weeks ago and had a 12% off coupon. The following week the same phone was on sale and I went to get a PM. They only refunded me the difference between the new sale price and the price I actually paid for the item (orig price - 12% off). I tried to argue that I should get the orig price minus the new sale price (since a coupon was not a sale price) but their system would not even allow it. I think this works the same way when you use Reward Zone $. If you look at your receipt the next time you use RZ$ and buy multiple items, it divides the RZ$ by how many items you purchased and subtracts that amount from each item ($10RZ used, bought 2 items, it will subtract $5 from each item), hence giving you the price you "paid" for each item.

The BB I went to rang up all three at full price, then took off $20 from each game.

So, still 1 free, but spread over all 3 titles.

I noticed that when I did the snowwhite steelbook preorder I used a RZ certificate and it did show that I paid a lower price. I was worried since they do their preorders as a return and buy that they wouldn't apply the full preorder price but it actually did.

Thanks OP! I preordered Borderlands and Dragon's Age on Spun.com using their 25% off coupon. My order for Borderlands still hasn't shipped and now it is backordered. I will never buy from spun.com again. I have to freaking email them to cancel the order.

After going over to my shelf and noticing the rather thick layer of dust that has accumulated on my Smackdown! Vs. RAW 2009 video game, I've decided that it might not be a great idea to drop $60 on the next installment.

What would you guys, in your infinite wisdom, recommend for my third game?

For reference, I've played the Uncharted demo and enjoyed it, so I'll be grabbing Uncharted 2 along with Batman: Arkham Asylum which I've wanted for a long time. I'm a big third person shooter, RPG fan (Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid) and I'm especially interested if the game has online multi-player. Not so much into the war genre, but I'm open to it if there is one you really recommend. Note: I can't play first person shooters, because I get a weird motion type sickness from the display. :(

I'm a newbie to this generation of gaming, so feel free to suggest any title because it's likely that I haven't played it.

Two games I recommend (along with Batman and Uncharted 2 that you're already planning on getting ... both good choices):

inFamous was a lot of fun ... that's a good third-person game.

Valkyrie Chronicles is great ... it combines turn-based strategy with third-person aiming (with first-person view for snipers, but that shouldn't make you motion sick).

There are demos for both on PSN.

Wolverine, Prototype, Overlord 2

Thoughts on those?

If you have children or a wife/girlfriend/so that you want to maybe have game with you, check out Little Big Planet: Game of the Year edition. Even if you just play alone, you can have a lot of fun. Plus, you can build and share levels and download levels from other people. I have had a lot of fun with the game.

I'm a big fan of Overlord and 2 was a bit of a disappointment. I'm not saying it's not worth 67% of $50, but if there's anything else you have your eye on, you might look that way instead.

The graphics are comparable. Maybe a little better in the 2nd. Gameplay took a step back. It was harder to control the minions in the 2nd at first. You get used to it though. Story was good, very over-the-top and funny at times.

Thanks again for the two suggestions, I really enjoyed inFAMOUS (moreso than Valkyria Chronicles) so I'll probably add this to my order on Sunday. One question though, I read online that it is open-world, but in the demo it keeps restarting the level when I explore the city. Is this just the limitations of the demo, or is the actual game like this too?

Vryce, I already have LittleBigPlanet, but that would have been a great suggestion if I didn't.

pinata242, I checked some reviews and videos, and Overlord doesn't look like my type of game. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

I have most of the latest releases. Tekken 6 is preordered from Amazon. I'm skipping Madden this year. Already have FIFA 10 and I'm not interested in any other sports game. Uncharted 2, Batman AA, Beatles, GH5, Halo ODST, inFamous, Ghostbusters, Wolverine already have them, just mentioning some new releases and previous recommendations.

Right now I can only think on Borderlands and maybe Brutal Legend.

Asked this at CAG, and I was told it would work, but just to get a second or third opinion:

I might jump in provided I can use my $40 PM'd Fallout 3 GOTY I bought this week as one of my games that I grabbed for this sale. Would BB let me do this because I PM'd it and the deals won't overlap, or would all I need to do is return it, rebuy it with PM (Not interested in other $60 games right now, so the idea of buying one $60 and two $30-40 titles isn't such a good deal.) + Other game for free game?

I'm guessing it's a YMMV, and it wouldn't hurt to go and ask the clerk, I'd just like to know if there's very little chance so I won't waste my time.

As far as DJ Hero, it might work, since you'd be spending more than the price limit, but the store probably won't give you a copy of it (or any game over $59.99) for free.

So, I almost punched a BB manager and cashier. Picked up 2 copies of Borderlands and Wii Play. So I get to register and I tell the cashier online, Borderlands is listed at $53.99 online and that I wanted to match the price. Some cunt of a manger comes over and goes "I checked online this morning, it's $59.99." So I asked her if she could go look again, since I just looked at it and it was definitely $53.99. So she gives me this look and disappears for a few minutes. She comes back and adjusts the price without even saying sorry. Then, she puts the price of my third item as $.01. It's supposed to be free! WTF? Then, I ask the cashier to only take $50.00 off this gift card I had, so I could split payment. She rings up entire thing on gift card. I'm like did you even hear me? Yeah, in that situation it's best to walk away. The chances of them crediting the right amount (if at all) back to your gift card are very slim.

Picked up Borderlands, Saw, and the new Lips bundle Sunday morning. The guy working in the videogame section didn't know about the sale until I told him about it. The cashier didn't know about it either, so I had to point it out in the ad. And it didn't ring up correctly, so he reduced the prices of 2 of the games by $30 each. Oh well, I plan on keeping all 3 so it doesn't matter too much.

Thinking about going back and getting 3 of the cheaper games...Dead Rising, Condemned, and something else (I wish Up was $19.99, but it's still $29.99).

I wish I would've waited on Borderlands, since I only played if for a couple hours this whole week, it would've been nice to get it for free.

Anyhoo, here are the two I definitely want:
- Ratchet & Clank
- Tekken 6

and I'm torn on the 3rd one - Brutal Legend, but I'm scared of it's RTS elements.
or Froza, but I'm scared of it's sim elements, and I also have NFS:Shift, which would make getting Froza redundant.

The guy who pointed me toward the 360 section (it was a store I don't normally go to) said "And games are buy 1 get one free this week!"

If you still have your receipt for Borderlands, buy it with the deal and return the sealed copy with your first receipt.

I did get Brutal Legend, I was a little worried about the RTS part, but I watch a gameplay video and it didn't look boring or cumbersome like most RTS games I've seen (sorry RTS fans, I just don't like RTSes). Hopefully I won't be disappointed.

Oh yeah, and Borderlands rocks.

Without playing either of those 3 games yet, I would go with NFS: Shift, as that would take care of your racing need... and you obviously are not really keen on Forza... since you called it Froza... twice. ;)

BB wouldn't count DJ Hero in this deal since it contained "hardware". I ended up getting DJ Hero (360), Ratchet & Clank (ps3), Tekken 6 (360), and Borderlands (ps3). They were out of the 360 version of Borderlands so I just went down the road to Target and exchanged it. :-)

The cashier told me the FREE game had to be 59.99 or less. We (and some other store employees) thought I was in the clear but it wouldn't register DJ Hero as a game.

pinata242

I'm not saying that doesn't make sense, I'm just saying the ad seemed pretty clear on that point. Though it was probably both if, like Rock Band & Guitar Hero bundles, DJ Hero is classified as something other than a straight up "game" in the system, it would have been locked it by multiple rules ;)

HotThang

LOL I tried to convince them that it really was a game but no dice. I totally understand the ad in the case of some people that may try to buy 2 DJ Heros/Rock band bundles etc..and getting a third one free. Now I'm curious to know if the Tekken 6 bundled with the flight stick (or whatever it's called) would have qualified as a game or hardware.

On a side note, when I traded Borderlands at Target, they actually gave me a target gift card worth the amount of the game+ tax since I had no receipt.

In the interest of protecting yourself, you may not want to advertise on a public message board that you did this. If you disclosed to Target customer service that you purchased the game at Best Buy, then you're fine. However, if you did not disclose that information and the gift card that Target gave you was worth more than you paid for the game at Best Buy, you could potentially be prosecuted for fraud.

Hmmm, I found out something interesting today. When checking out, the free game does not have to be the cheapest game...just the last one they scan. As you are checking out, if you give them the cheapest games first, then the most expensive one last, you'll get the most expensive for free. For example, if you bought A Boy and His Blob for $39.99 then maybe Wii Fit Plus for $19.99, if you have them scan something like Borderlands for $59.99 last, that one will be free and you'll get all three for $60+tax. Or heck, if you buy two $20 games and get a $60 game for free, you're paying less for all three than you would normally for the $60 alone.

Madden 2010 (for Wii): $50.00

Paid $74.34 with gift card
Got 1 gift receipt

Evening (Just returned):
Returned (With gift receipt):
Gears of War: $20.00
Madden 2010: $50.00

Got gift card for $74.34

Purchased:
Battlefield: $20.00
Forza 3: 0.00 *(2nd game free)

Return
Battlefield: $20.00
Zelda: $50.00

IMO, if BB coded this promo wrong, and the 2nd game always ends up as the freebie, and people choose to use this knowledge to get the more expensive games for free (while still buying the required two others), I don't really have a serious problem with that....it's BB's fault that they're system wasn't set up right...
HOWEVER, if you are then taking back what you paid for and cycling through and getting free games like that guy, then I hope he gets busted....that crosses a major line....he's not merely taking advantage of a glitch, but basically outright stealing!

There are many ways to put a stop to it. Why it even happened in the first place is astonishing. If I were someone of very low character, I could have sandwiched Brutal Legend or Dirt 2 between two copies of Rock Revolution and walked out with a really good game and a matching set of coasters for $10. Shit, I may have to try this for Ratchet and Clank. Did somebody say Rock Revolution?

And, frankly, I do not see this as stealing. If that's the way the Best Buy computers work, that's the way they work. Retail stores have been having deals where the cheapest item is free for a very, very long time. It's downright lazy of Best Buy to set their system up to not identify items by prices, but by placement within the transaction (especially considering the computer already has to check the prices in order to determine whether or not all three items are valid for the promotion). I just look at it as a system error in my favor. They don't happen often and I don't go out of my way to search for ways to scam companies. But if I find out about one, I'll take advantage. If I go there with two $10 games and a $60 game, and the $60 game rings up free, and the cashier says I can't do that, I won't put up a big stink. But if the cashier says nothing (or says "Wow, you got a great deal"), then I will go on with my day without a second thought.

Besides, it's not like I'm asking for a $10 plasma or anything.

It's downright lazy of Best Buy to set their system up to not identify items by prices, but by placement within the transaction (especially considering the computer already has to check the prices in order to determine whether or not all three items are valid for the promotion). i don't see the pricing glitch as stealing either.

i think what most people will consider stealing is when you return the two paid for games for gift receipts and buy 3 more games. keep one game (the free one), return the two paid for games for gift receipts....and continue the cycle.

it's a loop hole so some don't consider it stealing. others do.

Gift card or not, in the end you may be getting 200 or 300 worth of games from them for spending 100 bucks. you have still taken 100 to 200 dollars from them that they could have gotten from someone else for those games. Still wrong imo.

I'm not advocating buying three games and returning two, but only because I find it to be way too much of a hassle. If you buy three games, then return two, you still honored the requirements of the deal. If they don't want people doing it, they have the right to say all sales final or customer must return all three games together or something to that effect.

I have a feeling most people will buy two games they're semi-interested in at a low price, and one game they really want at a higher price, get the higher priced one for free, and keep all three. The people who would buy multiple cheap games to bundle with multiple expensive games will more than likely sell them all on ebay anyway and I can't stand those kind of people who take a good thing too far.

That's fine. The part that people are taking issue with is that there are people that are buying 3 games, returning 2, then using the gift card to buy another 3 games, return the non-free ones again, wash, rinse repeat, until they have 3, 4, 5 free games on their two game investment.

Gears of War $20
Halo ODST $0
Lego Batman $20

The only problem is finding $20 games I actually want. I didn't find any $10 games. I didn't want to try it with the Fallout 3 expansion packs because I don't know if that'll work or not.

I don't want to sound greedy but I wish this was closer to Christmas so I could use it on presents. As such I don't know if people will buy games between now and then or not.

I just tried it and I crashed and burned.

Problem was they had the $60 games in security cases and the $20 games not in cases. So of course, even though I handed her the stack with the $60 game in the middle, she took that out of the security case and scanned it first. I figured that might happen when I saw the situation, but I figured I'd try anyway.

Oh well, I'll return them tomorrow.

I went and got two Wii games for my boys for X-Mas and one 360 game. I figured I'd give it a shot but not go out of my way to try to get the $60 game for free. I had it in the middle of the stack, but she re-arranged the order to get the security cases off, and scanned it last. So it appeared to be a no go, but then she realized one of the Wii games hadn't scanned, so she had to scan that one again, which meant the 360 game was now the middle game, and yes indeed it was free.

If you buy 2, get one free, and return the 2 you paid for (exchanging for different games is fine), I'd call that stealing or cheating, even if you get a gift card which you will then buy more stuff at that store. The promotion is buy 2 games get one free, not buy 2 games worth of DVDs and get one game free.
Returning the nonfree ones for gift cards, then using those to buy more and repeating, is total theft. Slickdeals people are scumbags.

I really am surprised BB isn't prorating the games and taking 1/3 the highest priced game from each one, I'm sure their computers could do that. I know they prorate Reward Zone cert expenditures.

I'm really surprised BB hasn't fixed this exploit yet. This is a screw up on the level of Circuit City.

Taking it prorated wouldn't work because then people would just return the games and get a 33% discount on a single game. They need to make this a bundle, or somehow indicate that this is a promo so returns don't get processed the normal way.

Not that I'm no BB's side or anything, but I would like this to become an annual thing and not a one-time thing due to abuse.

This glitch in the system is just crazy.

Now, I had planned to buy 3 this week, but was waiting for them to get Borderlands back in. So I went in today and got Mass Effect, Borderlands, and Ghostbusters for $63. Apparently this has happened with past buy 2 get one free sales:

This past summer, Best Buy ran a sale on Nintendo DS games of Buy 2 Get 1 free. There was a glitch in the computer program at the cash registers that allowed the 3rd game to be the free game, even if it wasn't the most expensive game. This led to many across the internet to buy two cheap games and get the third more expensive game scanned free. The glitch lasted the entire week of the sale and was never corrected.
