Smallville -- "Echo" -- 10/16/09

Lois and Clark

Synopsis:

Spoiler:

Tess (Cassidy Freeman) forces Oliver (Justin Hartley) to come to a Queen Industries gala to put the Board at ease, but things go awry when the Toyman (guest star Chris Gauthier) shows up with a bomb and a plan to take revenge on Oliver. The Toyman tells Oliver he must confess to murdering Lex or he will blow the place up. Meanwhile, as part of his training, Jor-El gives Clark (Tom Welling) the ability to hear other people's thoughts.

Interesting to see the Toyman coming back.

Re: Smallville -- "Echo" -- 10/16/09

Alright, finished watching this and thought it was good, not great.

Loved everything with Lois and Clark.

Loved how Lois was getting all hot and turned on when Clark was reading her mind & finishing her sentences along with asking her out on a semi-date.....But, of course you knew it wasn't going to happen. The scene where Clark almost heard her saying she was wearing a thong was great.

Did not like the Toyman plot at all. I thought it was a thankless return for the character. The Payoff fell flat on it's face at the end.

The mind reading ability was cute and worked well with the Lois and Clark scenes, but I really didn't understand how it fit in the grander scheme of the episode. So, he somehow was able to figure out Toyman in the crowd was an android? Tess coming into the Jail and seeking his help was a big WTF?

Getting quite tired of Oliver being on a death wish. Fake Jimmy is dead...Get over it dude. Hopefully next week's episode brings more of an end to this storyline.

I liked the Lois & Clark stuff as well.

Glad Chloe had a smaller part this episode since she had been reaching Lana levels of being annoying.

I really wanted to see Lois in those homemade cut off shorts.

What? He got that in the first season (and even used it in this episode).

I liked the Lois and Clark stuff too, but as always we know they won't end up together during this show, so it all seems pointless.

Chloe needs a plot.

Oliver needs to either return to being the Green Arrow or get off the show. I like him as an actor and character, but he's doing absolutely nothing right now and they need to figure out what he's for these days.

And "The Blur" remains the dumbest thing they've ever come up with. They should have just started calling him Superman if they wanted him to BE Superman. I don't understand their continued devotion to "no tights, no flights." The creators said that YEARS ago, and now they've got him racing around town saving people with a big S on his chest...seriously...they aren't fooling anyone.

Yeah, that was quite the tease given how short she was shown to have cut them.

Sweaty Tess was the highlight this week.

I thought we already had an Oliver intervention last week? Didn't they show him pouring out the bottle?

He poured it over his Green Arrow costume and lit it on fire.

Almost everyone agrees on the points you raised. My suspicion is that the producers are contractually obligated to not use certain elements of the Superman mythos. They have never come out and directly said it for fear of offending the fanbase. Most likely for budgetary reasons when the show first debuted, they limited themselves to certain elements in exchange for lower fees. We know for a fact that Bruce Wayne was off-limits even though the writers wanted him instead of the Oliver Queen character because of licensing issues. Using the name Superboy was also verboten. It makes no sense for the writers to send Clark around Manhattan in that Neo-ripoff costume if not for legal and monetary issues. The flying thing is probably tied to it also.

The introduction of Lois this early in Clark's life has caused a huge problem with one of the core elements of Superman's mythos, that Lois doesn't know he is Superman.

I don't see any way the creators could put the two of them together if they want to stick to the most common telling of his story. They are going to have to have Clark go into some Kryptonian capsule and come out looking like Brandon Routh to make it work.

I suppose they could just say "fuck it" and couple them up, but if they are going to do that I wish they wouldn't get so stuck on other things.

Re: Smallville -- "Echo" -- 10/16/09

i enjoyed the episode in large part to the chemsitry between lois and clark.
they really do need to get the ball rolling on him actually being superman allready though.
the show has some really great things and the fact that we get so many dc comics superheros as supporting and guest characters on the show is very cool.
as for the costume they should lose the jacket and just go with the black superman suit (like the one seen in the reign of the supermen storyline in the comics.
I think a lot of fans would be ok with that outfit here.

Re: Smallville -- "Echo" -- 10/16/09

I thought this was a good episode. I'm a sucker for everything that is Lois and Clark. I agree the sailor and thong bits were great.

I'm okay with the Oliver plot and think it adds to the story. I especially find it interesting when you can tell Tess is being interesting, but then the continual jibes between Tess and Oliver lead back to square one.

I wonder how Oliver starting to see Lex will play out. Our assumption has been Oliver's issue has been with Jimmy, but now the "ghost" of Lex is creeping up.

I do wish the CW held off on airing episodes until baseball is over. The ratings are not being helped at all.
