Before Pump It Out came out in 2003, I never heard of him. After that single kind of blew up on MTV, I bought his album and really dug him. Loved it. He went quiet for awhile then came out with "Gangsta Party" feat. Nate Dogg, which was supposed to be his lead single for his second album with Def Jam, "The Growth". Shit happened, management changed (Jay-Z took over as CEO), and his album was eventually shelved. He hit the underground circuit with some great mixtapes (the Mood Muzik series), and finally released his sophomore album in February of this past year on Amalgam Digital.

The prelude to his next album which drops next year came out last week and was really well done. It's called The Great Escape. It's very dark with a lot of raw production. Since he helped put together Slaughterhouse (which is himself, Crooked I, Joell Ortiz, and Royce da 5'9") he's gotten a lot more attention and he even has his own website that he blogs at all the time. He went from one hit wonder, to fading underground, to getting attention now.

Most recently, he's been beefing with Method Man of the Wu-tang Clan for various reasons. Slaughterhouse is also looking to sign a deal with Shady/Aftermath for their sophomore album due next year.

Alright so after this brief history, I gotta say he was and still is one of my favorite rappers. I like his style and his production. My only problem now is that I never really saw or heard him in interviews until recently, and he talks in the 3rd person ALL THE TIME. "Joe Budden this, Joe Budden that." It's really annoying. See here:

He made a song in response to this interview on his The Great Escape web release called "No Comment". Dude is great lyrically but he comes off pretty douchey.

Before this thread have you ever heard of him? Do you like him? If you haven't listen to Padded Room (his 2nd album), The Great Escape, and Slaughterhouse's self-titled debut album which all dropped this year, then do it. Some of the best rap and hip-hop of 2009 IMO.

I never really got into his music outside of Pump It Up back in the earlier part of the decade. The Slaughterhouse cd is fucking great though. I was very pleasantly surprised with it.
