Lineup: Advantage Phils

Starting Pitching: Advantage Phils

Bullpen: Advantage Dodgers

I am a Phils fan so I may be biased, but I say the Phils in 7. Most national sports writers are picking the Dodgers because of the Phils bullpen is a mess, so it should be a great series. Plus the fact that they played each other last year in the NLCS adds alittle more to it.

Yeah, I can't wait to see the Dodgers take batting practice against the Phils bullpen. I am picking the Dodgers of course, but this isn't going to as easy as the Cardinal series.

Very unhappy about this. I'd much rather watch the NLCS, but won't get the chance.

this isn't going to be as easy as the Cardinal series.

:( It still makes me sad the Cards couldn't put up more of a fight.

As a Dodger fan, my confidence isn't that high. I think the Phils can easily repeat their performance like last year, although I do think the Dodgers lineup is a bit underrated.

Game 2 start time =

Both these teams suck. They should just cancel this series and let the Angels/Yankees series be the WS. :D

I believe the Phillies took the first two in LA last year. Hopefully they can get at least one and bring the series back here for 3 games. Same lineup as last year with better pitching. I'm not really sure how the Dodgers feel they have an advantage.

Hopefully, we can get rid of both of the LA teams and have a World Series with no coast to coast nonsense. Plus, the Phils are the only team capable of knocking off the Yankees, IMO.

Series started in Philadelphia last year. Phillies won the first two in Philly, then lost the first game in LA (game 3), and won Games 4 (on the Stairs HR) and 5 to take the series.

I don't know why I thought the series started in LA. I guess that gives some advantage to the Dodgers I hadn't considered.

I don't think this has been officially announced yet.

Phillies indicate Pedro as Game 2 starter (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20091014&content_id=7457680&vkey=news_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi&partnerId=rss_phi)

With Blanton and Happ in the bullpen for games 1 and 2, I guess that means Lee will go Game 3. Also, Chan Ho Park was added to the roster and Brett Myers dropped.

I have nothing against the Dodgers but it would be great not to have any west coast trips to deal with during the WS.

But of course, don't count out the Angels. They're a very good team and they've always had the Yankees number. Wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Angels in the World Series.

On top of that I think a Phils/Yankees World Series would be great as one of my closest friends is a big Phillies fans.

I feel it would have a Mets vs. Yankees 2000 WS vibe to it. I know 90% of the country would disagree but that series was a lot of fun in NY and there are plenty of Phils fans in New York.

Not really sure why you keep bringing that up and want to hang your hat on that series. The Yankees were a mess and only 24-17 coming into that series. A far cry from the team that went 79-42 the rest of the way and finished with 103 wins.

Sure, but they were/are playing a lot better now than they did then. They were 17-17 and won 7 in a row before that series against Minnesota and Baltimore. They didn't exactly have the toughest schedule in the world those first 24 wins.

Regardless of their record was and what they ended up with, hanging your hat on a 3 game series in June is a tough sell. Not saying the Phillies can't or won't beat the Yankees (if either team gets that far, so we're getting ahead of ourselves), but to site the reason that the Phillies are better than the Yankees because the Phillies won a 3 game series in June doesn't really fly.

After all, the Yankees lost 2 of 3 at home to the Nationals too. It's baseball, that stuff happens.

The master of the quick hook, and the guy who was telling the TBS guys how you can't be afraid to yank a starter, decides this is the time to see if a young pitcher who's thrown 3 wild pitches in one inning can work his way out of it?

This is the difference between the NL and AL, there is a bit more strategy without the DH.

If Torre was in the AL(like he was for 13 years), and didn't have to worry about the pitcher hitting second the next inning, I think he would have yanked him, but he took his chances and it backfired.

I don't like the DH either.... but since Torre was pinch-hitting Hudson in the next inning and the 2nd baseman made the last out of the previous inning - seems like he easily could have did a double switch. I think Torre just screwed it up and must have missed the 3 wild pitches and countless balls that were missing all over the place.

Wow Torre is just terrible... had he not thought ahead about what he would do if Thome reached base? And why are the umps just sitting there and saying we'll just wait while Joe gets his shit together?

This was the key mistake. It was a rare Lasorda-esque blunder on Torre's part.

fumanstan
10-16-09, 11:24 AM
Yeah, and the weird thing is given the series with the Cards, Torre wasn't shy about going to the bullpen. I assume he was hoping Kershaw could get out of it, but yikes given the circumstances.

From Jayson Stark's article too:

The Dodgers' starter was Clayton Kershaw. He threw three wild pitches in one inning. He never did that all year. He also gave up a three-run homer (to Carlos Ruiz). Never did that all year, either.

Equally unfathomable was what happened to the Dodgers' most unhittable left-handed reliever, George Sherrill. He came in to start the eighth inning and walked the first two hitters. He'd never done that. Not this year. Not any year. Then he served up a three-run homer to a left-handed hitter (Raul Ibanez). So how many homers did Sherrill allow to left-handed hitters during the regular season? None, of course.

Oh, and one more thing on Sherrill: He faced 111 hitters in two months after the Dodgers traded for him this July -- and allowed two runs. He then gave up more runs than that in this series within the first three hitters he faced.

:(

starman9000

That's normal Lidge. Even last year when he was "lights out", his saves were like that.

Ah... the selective memory...

Lidge 2009 reg season WHIP:1.81, 9.36K/9IP
Lidge 2009 post season WHIP:1.71 (obviously too small a sample size to be considered yet)

Lidge 2008 reg season WHIP:1.23, 11.94K/9IP
Lidge 2008 post season WHIP:0.96, 12.54K/9IP

So when you say his saves 'were like that" last year, you actually meant to say he's only allowed 50% more baserunners? and even more compared to the 2008 postseason (nearly double)? For you to say his saves were like that last year is a big stretch... He may turn it around, but he's pitching nowhere near like he did last year (even putting aside the ERA and blown saves).

That's what I was going off of as well. Remember the World Series clincher even. I think Navarro got a 1 out hit, and then Zobrist absolutely pulverized one to right field that by all rights should've found the gap and been a game tying double, but it was right at Werth. (for an example)

wirefan
10-16-09, 05:22 PM
^ Or it's what you want to remember... he gave up 1/2 the baserunners (in the 08 postseason) and 50% fewer baserunners in the regular, he also struck out hitters at a 20% higher rate.... I'm sorry what you get from watching most games is the ability to recall the tough saves and selectively forget the 'easier' ones.

How about the # of 1-2-3 innings or innings with only 1 baserunner? Would that be a measure of easy vs uneasy saves? Perhaps a bit more than as measured by Phillies fan memory?

2008 (81 total appearance):
26 appearances with no baserunners allowed
24 appearances with just 1 baserunner

2009 (70 total appearance)
20 appearances with no baserunnes (though four were 1 out appearances)
12 appearances with 1 baserunner

So to summarize:
2008: 50/81 appearance with 0 or 1 baserunner (~62%)
2009: 32/71 appearances with 0 or 1 baserunner (~45%)

Granted I don't watch Phillies games as much as you guys probably do - but I must have missed some ridiculously good defense in 2008.... or maybe the defense degraded in 2009? I'm sure that the difference betwen 62% and 45% was the ridiculously good defensive play that Philly apparently only did in 2008 and not 2009 (or at least did at a much higher rate).

Between him, Rollins and Feliz, the fact they are even at this point is amazing.

Like whotony said it's only been last night and today. There was plenty of time to make that throw. Maybe he should try throwing overhand instead of that ridiculous sidearm.

And while fading toward the pitcher's mound? (such that the ball has a tendency to drift in that direction too, unless you throw across your body.

I hate to first guess but Pedro had a 2 hitter and just 87 pitches and was pitching on, what, 20 days rest? And they pull him where you had a potential bunt situation (runner on first, 1 out) when his spot in the order came up and while leading?

Edit: And in comes relief pitcher #5 of the 8th inning

He lets him pitch 130 pitches on a Sunday night regular season, but takes him out after 87 pitches in a playoff game?????

Now if Pedro gets to the 8th, you should have a quick hook, but atleast let him go out in the 8th. This bullpen is still a mess and I predicted they would atleast blow 1 maybe 2 games.

tofferman
10-16-09, 08:29 PM
It makes no sense (despite the reasoning) why managers pull pitchers who are in complete command of the game as Pedro was this afternoon. His performance, like Padilla's, was masterful. Managers state that pitchers are on "pitch counts" or that they want to let the bullpen finish it.

Starting pitchers are simply coddled nowadays. He should have remained in the game until there was a real scoring threat or he was gassed.

I am suprised Manuel didn't try to get all he can out of Pedro, because I thought that was the theory going into the playoffs with this Phils team. These relievers have been hot and cold ALL year. Madson is unhittable one game and then gets shelled the next. Park was great last night, and couldn't get an out today. And you just don't know what you'll get with Lidge.

I really thought Charlie was going to ride his starters as long as they go, and then if you have to go to the bullpen, you cross your fingers. This was a move you make LAST year with the Phils, you get to the 8th and Madson then Lidge, game over. Not this year....

The only momentum in baseball is your next pitcher. One of the Dodgers starters can throw a gem like Padilla and steal one game in Philly. I just think the Phils have too much firepower over the Dodgers to lose this series. Plus Lee will pitch game 6, as he is as tough as Sabbathia right now.

All Phillies fans remember The Wolf Pack but did you know this about them?

Wolf still has loyal fans in Philly
By Amy K. Nelson
ESPN.com

PHILADELPHIA -- When Randy Wolf takes the mound Monday night against his old team, there will be six Phillies fans, somewhere in the stands, quietly watching with admiration.
Patrick Wood, a lifelong, diehard Phillies fan, will be one of the six family members at Citizens Bank Ballpark. Wood, 38, will be rooting for his team, but that doesn't mean he won't have mixed emotions when he watches the Phillies try to build on their 2-1 series lead against the Dodgers in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series.

That's because Wolf isn't just another hated opposing pitcher. He is much more than that to the Wood family.

"In the regular season I don't mind if both pitchers throw eight shutout innings and we win it in the bottom of the ninth," Patrick Wood says from his Philadelphia home Sunday night. "In the playoffs, if they put a 3-spot on [Wolf] and he goes five innings, I won't cry. But I don't want to see him get shelled."

Many fans wouldn't understand Patrick Wood's loyalty to a former Phillie. But most also wouldn't understand how Randy Wolf was there for the Wood family -- the originators of the Wolf Pack fan section at the old Veterans Stadium -- in its worst moment, when the baby of the family, Tom, was killed in a car crash.
When Wolf surprised the family by attending Tom's funeral, a bond between the Wolf Pack brothers and Randy would remain.

It was 1999 and Wolf, who had been taken in the second round of the 1997 draft by Philadelphia, was a rookie pitcher. At one of his first starts, some of the Wood brothers took out a white cloth and decided to make a sign, buy some wolf masks and create a fan club. They called themselves the Wolf Pack.

"The Phillies stunk in '99; they were terrible," Patrick Wood says. "We just decided we're gonna support this guy. My brothers picked up some masks made a banner that said wolf pack on it. We danced around, had fun and enjoyed it."

The brothers, seven of them, and a few cousins made it a ritual: every home game when Randy pitched they'd crowd the empty 700 level at the Vet and don the wolf masks. It did not go unnoticed by the 22-year-old lefty.

On May 13, in his only start at Citizens Bank Ballpark this season, Randy Wolf tossed six innings of three-hit ball to earn the win.

Soon thereafter, a meeting was arranged between Randy and the Wolf Pack. Patrick Wood was impressed with how nice and normal Wolf seemed; he even thought Randy looked like he could have been a member of their family. A mutual respect was born, and for three years Patrick and his brothers and cousins attended every single home start Wolf made.

They once made an appearance when Wolf didn't start. It was right before the 2000 All-Star break and then-manager Terry Francona asked Wolf to go to the bullpen. Some of the brothers were home watching the game on TV, saw Wolf warming up and rushed to the Vet, masks, sign and all.

"By the time I got into the game, they were there," Wolf says. "That's unbelievable."

That same year, Patrick also rushed his newlywed bride, Amy, to a start in between their wedding and reception.

Then on April 5, 2002 -- Opening Day for the Phillies -- Tom Wood, the youngest of 11 children, and seventh son, was hit in a head-on car collision. Not a scratch was on his body, but his brain swelled with damage. While the family was at the hospital, Randy Wolf called.

"I don't know how Randy found out, but he called the hospital to check on him," Patrick says.
Tom Wood passed away five days later. He was 21 years old. Two days later, on April 12, Randy Wolf made his season debut. The Wood family, which had never missed a Randy Wolf start, knew what they had to do. In grief, they gathered at their Wolf Pack section, asked the media to give them their space, and arrived with a new banner: Wolf Pack. Tom Wood 1980-2002. The Wood family watched as the Phillies ran a pregame video tribute to their brother.

Patrick broke down in tears.

Then Wolf took the mound. Right before he threw his first pitch, he turned around and pointed to the Wolf Pack.
The next day, when the Wood family buried Tom, Randy Wolf attended the funeral. The Wood family didn't know the major leaguer, the one whom they paid tribute at each of his home starts, was coming to pay tribute to them, and to Tom.

"I could tell they really appreciated that I was there," Wolf says. "I didn't do it for that reason; I thought it was really cool how [the Wood family] treated me. I didn't think it was that hard for me to do. The fact that they appreciated it, I knew that I made the right decision."

In the years since Tom's passing, the Wolf Pack's bond grew stronger with Randy. When he made the 2003 All-Star team, members of the Wolf Pack went to Chicago, where they met Randy's mother.
"She adopted us," Patrick says with a laugh.

Patrick and Randy exchanged e-mail addresses, and other Wood brothers, some of whom are Philly police officers, remained in touch with Wolf. Then, Wolf left the Phillies after the 2006 season. A native of Los Angeles, he signed with the Dodgers for the 2007 season.

Patrick knew how special Dodger Stadium was to Wolf, who would go to games there with his father, Jim, who passed away when Randy was a senior in high school.

"I was happy for him when he went to L.A.," Patrick says. "As a friend, how could you deny him that? I know some people were bothered in Philly that he left; we weren't among them."

After splitting last year between San Diego and Houston, Wolf signed a one-year $5 million deal with the Dodgers this year. The 33-year-old left-hander went 11-7 with a 3.23 ERA this year. In two starts against the Phillies this season, Wolf is 1-1 with a 5.11 ERA. At Citizens Bank Park, he is 9-7 with a 4.30 ERA in 27 career starts.

But his memories were really not made here; instead they began a decade ago, in section 700, upper level, at the Vet.

"It was pretty incredible," Wolf says. "It was my second home start and they were there. I think it was like three or four guys … and from that point on they were just there.

"They took me in and made me feel welcome [in] what could be kind of a tough city."

That support continued, even on Sunday. Wolf was at his hotel when one of the detail cops told him John Wood wanted to give him a ride to the ballpark. Wolf said he'd be ready at 3 p.m. And no surprise, there was John Wood, at 3 o'clock, in his cruiser, driving Randy Wolf -- a Dodger -- to Game 3 against the Phillies.
But Wolf knows once Monday night begins, the Wood family's allegiance is with the Phillies. Right after the Phillies beat the Rockies to make it to the NLCS, Patrick Wood sent Wolf an e-mail.

"Despite what anyone is going to say, you know us, we know you," it read. "This if your life, your career. May the best team win."

Park has a beard and mustache, if that is what you're talking about.

Kershaw just can't grow a real beard.

And they both look silly. Good luck in the Series.

One nice thing if the Phillies hang on and close this out tonight...

No more postseason games on TBS this year.

I'm in awe, I never expected in my lifetime that a Phillies team would win and then get back into the world series in consecutive seasons.

Can you blame them?

Though Caray's tendency to root for the Dodgers will seem tame compared to Buck and McCarver's love for the Yankees in the WS

Congratulations to the Phillies for winning the 2009 National League pennant. http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/artists/just_cuz/JC_cheers.gif

Maybe it'll just distract Philadelphia sports fan from the usual season-long soap opera that is the Eagles. http://www.kolobok.us/smiles/remake/wink.gif

Congrats to the Phillies. This series was mostly a mismatch...and could/should have been a sweep.

Congrats to the Phillies, the best team won and since I am an NL guy, I will be rooting for them in the WS.

Totally agree, as I have grown up a pessimistic fan. I was 8 years old when the Phils won in '80, and 11 when the 76ers won in '83, but the past 25 years were some tough years being a Philly fan. You just expected our Philly sports teams to find a way to lose and break our hearts every year.

Last night I just knew we would clinch, as this team just doesn't quit. The Yankees(most likely) will be tough, as I see this series going 7 games. The Phils will have to beat CC once if they want to take the title. Hammels still worries me, but Lidge atleast looks like he has turned it around.

I say Charlie should pitch Pedro in Game 2 if they play the Yanks. How great would that be for Pedro to pitch at Yankee Stadium one more time, as maybe Don Zimmer could attend the game!

That series showed how much the Dodgers need to improve their lineup and pitching to compete with the Phillies. That team swept the Cardinals?

While I thought the Phillies were going to win this, I don't really see how it could/should have been a sweep despite a couple lopsided losses. The series could have easily been 2-2 going into last night if it wasn't for Broxton choking :(

I will NEVER:

- eat a black jack taco
- watch that goddamned Ray Romano show
- watch ANY show with George Lopez
- EVER hold Paul McCartney in the same regard after he sold "All You Need is Love" to Blackberry and allowed them to bastardize it the way they did.

TBS really knows how to destroy viewership.
