Here's to another Angels victory over the Yanks in the postseason! :)

Should be an epic series, let's hope it lives up to it! Discuss.....

Yankees managed to take 3 of 4 against them in September. Hopefully that'll carry over to the post season.

I'm also hoping this is series is as advertised. Hopefully we'll get some really good close games and.... maybe even a brawl thrown in for good measure. Let's see what happens when Sabathia gets into a fight with Chone Figgins. ;)

TBS is awful. I can't put my finger on it, but it is so bland, the announcers, the production, etc. Although I do like Ron Darling.

Its strange how some networks do some sports well and others like crap. TNT Basketball is great, yet they do a horrible job with Baseball.

Girardi saying he's leaning towards a 3 man rotation which would put Sabathia in game 4 on 3 days rest. Joe has to be smart about this. I can understand going to Sabathia in game 4 if the Yankees are down 2-1 or 3-0 but it's just stupid if they're up in the series.

However, I do like how the Yankees bullpen isn't being treated as a weapon instead of a last resort. The 3 man rotation could work if Sabathia doesn't throw too many pitches in game 1. Having Joba, Hughes, Mo and Ace in the pen is a luxury.

I think eventually once they get into more homes MLB Network will do the playoffs at least the Division Series. TBS sucks at baseball coverage.

Chris Berman is terrible during baseball broadcasts. Simply horrible . . .

But yeah, ESPN > TBS as far as baseball coverage. Too bad the Worldwide Leader's head is stuck so far up the NFL's ass these days.

I think the Angels are a very good team, but I see NY's power overcoming Anaheim. I'm going with the NYY in five.

I don't care for either team, nor do I hate them. If the Dodgers make it, i'd rather see them play the Angels since i'm in Southern California. If the Phillies win, I'd rather the Yankees win since I don't care for the Phils and like the Yanks chances better.

That extra off day (between games 4&5) really changes the strategy of a 7 game series... it basically means you can go on a 3 man rotation with only 1 start (game 4) being on short rest, it also shortens the bullpen as you don't have to worry about pitchers going 3 games in a row... it would be nice to see a return to the offdays only on travel days.

I think if you want to go with a 3man rotation you should get punished for it (meaning all subsequent starts would be on short rest). If you get rid of that extra day... games 4,5,6,7 would all be on short rest as opposed to just game 4.

And they really need to make the division series best of 7.

I think they should change it to a best of 1, and make it a 3 inning game. ;)

I agree with you on the short rest thing, I don't like the way the playoffs have been trending. With all the extra rest days, colder and colder weather, it seems like you play baseball one way all year, and then, when it matters, it becomes a different sport.

I know this would never happen(because of gate revenue), but they should cut the Regular Season back to 154 games. End the season about September 20th. Then have 3 rounds of 7 game series, and then the World Series could finish in the 3rd week of October like it used to.

I certainly agree about Sabathia. Mind you he'd only pitch on 3 days rest for game 4, he'd get another day of it goes 7.

I know the cutting back to 154 games isn't something they would do, but I wish they'd at least figure out a way to start the season a week earlier and have the majority of games for the first two weeks be played in warm weather cities. I think this is doable.

I live in the midwest and there's a chance of snow on Thursday night and Friday (don't know if its NY bound)so they should be playing these games already. This is an advantage to the Yankees so all there starting pitchers will be well rested. There should be one day off between series and two off days for travel inbetween. Fox and TBS can re-schedule there crappy programming or do what the NFL Network does-have one show and show it more times than Vesa Toskala lets in easy goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

They could have 8 double-admission double-headers over the regular season so they could still play 162 games.

I don't know why Girardi would even talk about a 3 man rotation at this point, why doesn't he see how the first two games play out? If the Yanks are up 2-0, or 2-1, then you stick with the 4 man rotation. Only if you are down 2-1 or 3-0, do you pitch Sabbathia in Game 4. IMO

It's going to be fun to watch Girardi's moves. I bet if CC is up big early, say 4 runs in the 5th, Joe pulls him. He trusts that awesome bullpen more than his #4 starter.

I'm rooting for an old classic: Dodgers vs. Yankees.

See I don't have a problem with time off between series, simply because if you sweep a team, you should reap the benefits of having your rotation set with the #1 going.

The Phillies are the only team that didn't sweep, so now they can't start Lee til game 3, as this is a different series if he is pitching game 1 and game 4 or 5. Essentially the Phils are penalized in the LCS for not sweeping like the Dodgers did.

I have a problem with the extra day off between games 4 and 5. They should only get days off on travel days.

Well, it could be worse. You could have 6-10" of snow, mass power outages and 4-8" more snow scheduled to arrive on a weekend in which 110,000 of your closest friends come to town (with a pop. of 20k)..... I don't see this ALCS game getting played tonight though....

Can we not continue to take a shit in just about every thread... isn't there a Yankees clinch the AL East thread to discuss the "inequities" of baseball?

I don't mind the discussion (I think we should cap R&D spending and cumulative auto worker salary by all auto suppliers to level the competitive playing field in the auto industry - this way Detroit may have a better shot. I mean is it really fair that some companies can hire more workers and spend more money on development?), but do we have to do this so many different threads?

Figgins is the better player for the #1 slot. He's a better base stealer and historically has a better OBP. I think you have to show some faith in him as a manager.

Yep. Aybar, Lackey, Hunter I believe.

Aybar didn't get an error (though probably should have) on the popup - it's one of those the ball never hit the glove, call it a basehit scoring rules.

The 3rd error was on Rivera for the throw he airmailed into the infield in the first inning (which let Damon take 2nd on his single)

Aybar also made a hideous throw into the dirt on a grounder early in the game that Morales bailed him out on with a real nice pick on an in between hop.

I doubt he'll finish it - I think Girardi would like to go directly to Rivera in the 9th or to a 4 out save in the 8th. Given how cold it is, I'm amazed how he doesn't at least have Hughes warming up.

I also think whether or not they play tomorrow determines whether CC starts game 4 - there's no point pitching him in game 4 unless you are going to bring Burnett back on 3 days rest for game 5 (which is what would happen with a rainout tomorrow).

Come on guys, I love a discussion more then anyone about the salary cap, but lets have that debate after the World Series.

I think the Angels just layed a dud tonight and will play better in Game 2, but Sabbathia looks like Hammels last playoff and Beckett in the playoffs of '07. When these guys are pitching like this, they carry a team to the Championship, as they are almost a given 2 wins a series.

Yanks look tough, as I love my Phils, but their bullpen is still a problem.

i'm a little outside of NYC in suburb. right now it isn't even raining by me. very cloudy and overcast, but expecting 1 inch of snow for tonight. percip near 100%.

just set Weatherbug to Yankee Stadium: tonight- Rain. Breezy. Near steady temperature in the low-40's. NE Wind 15 to 20mph with gusts up to 30mph. Chance of rain near 100%.

i think it is 50/50 if the rain isn't too heavy, but supposed to rain/snow all day tomorrow as well so tonight might be better chance.

No, they officially changed the made up rule that Bud tried to spin last year. (Where he said even if the WS game wasn't tied they would have played it out anyway).

This year they will play all 9 innings (or more) . What I'm not sure about is if a game is called after say 2 or 3 innings whether they will just suspend the game or start it over, but if it goes more than 5 they will pick up where they left off.

Oh and WRT Vladdy's swinging K at home and being hit by the ball. Rule 7.08 section f seems to apply here I think:

He is touched by a fair ball in fair territory before the ball has touched or passed an infielder. The ball is dead and no runner may score, nor runners advance, except runners forced to advance. EXCEPTION: If a runner is touching his base when touched by an Infield Fly, he is not out, although the batter is out

ie. I think he technically should have been out when he touched the ball in fair territory in front of the plate.

Safe...

Most umpires say they watch for the foot on the bag, along with the sound of the ball hitting the first basemen's glove. If you watched Jeter get to first, he didn't actually step on the bag. Instead he clipped it with the front of his foot...clear to see he touched it and I believe he did beat the play, but I think that's why the ump missed it.

Big strikeout of Matthews. Why are they bringing in Mo???

Good move Scioscia....pinch hitting GMJ there. Guess he wanted to give the Yanks a free out.

This is where Girardi blows the game - this move even if it works means Rivera pitches the 9th and he has used his 4 best bullpen arms to get 8 outs.

He's done this same exact thing countless times this year by burning an extra arm by pitching him with 2 outs and not allowing him to start the next inning (unless named Rivera). He got 3 combined outs from Hughes/Joba in a game potentially heading to extras....

Another wasted opportunity by the Angels. Whats that now...20 men left on base tonight?

How far has Napoli fallen when they pinch hit Gary Matthews Jr. for him?

13 men LOB for the Angels.

11 by Vlad and Abreu combined.

I'm beginning to think that the Yankees will be 1 out away from their 11th straight win this post season, up 10, and you'll still be complaining about Girardi. ;)

My issue with Girardi was pinch running for Swisher. Unless Gardner was going to straight steal OR Cano was going to bunt, it was kind of pointless. Now you lost Swisher's bat.

Well the Yanks will have A-Roid and Tex hitting in the bottom of the 9th, so that should set up nicely for a walk-off win.

That depends, do your pitchers get behind A-rod and say...Gee I better throw summthin down the middle so I don't walk him!?

funking Nathan...

There's a pretty heavy rain band about to cross into Staten Island. Should be up by the stadium in another 30-45 min.

The clear strategy for the Yankees now should be to stretch out the bottom of the 9th if it's still tied so if they don't score they can bring Rivera back tomorrow to pitch the 10th after some rest...

I looked into the future, here's the 9th:

Fuentes pitching.
Teixeria doubles to deep left.
Rodriguez singles to center, Teixeria scores.
