View Full Version : Visually Stunning Movies That Haven't Received Blu-Ray Treatment

Last month, we were treated to the double dose of Gladiator and Braveheart on blu-ray, both looking outstanding in high definition glory. While the story and acting are excellent in these film, a huge part of the enjoyment comes from the cinematography. These are the films that deserve the blu-ray treatment

While the medium is still fairly young, it is almost criminal that some visually stunning films are still only in SD such as:

Dances with Wolves

I would think this film would have been one of the first blu-rays releases. This movie is perhaps the most visually poetic film about the old west. Open plains, Native Americans, and a buffalo hunt would be a visual feast in blu-ray.
Unfortunately, no release date or news. Instead, we get the stinkfest, The Postman.

Saving Private Ryan

This movie blew me away with its realistic visuals and sound. The best part for me was when they are waiting for the attack in the town, and you can hear the beast tanks grinding away and coming close. Such realism.

Star Wars

Yea, we know it is coming, and Lucas will milk us for more money.

That's all that comes to mind at the moment. Can anyone give more examples?

I can't be the only one that's surprised that more Spielberg films havn't been released. 3 years into the format and CEO's are wondering why Blu-rays don't have more market penetration? It's simply because there are not enough catalog titles yet.

He allowed a fairly big catalog title (Close Encounters) to be released back in 2007, and then nothing except the day and date Indiana Jones 4. I think that tells us something. Yes, I know sales are gradually increasing, but he still may not be happy with the level they're at yet.

I'd really like to see Sam Mendes' collaborations with Conrad Hall: American Beauty and Road to Perdition.

BTW, Dances with Wolves has been available to download in magnificent 720p on PSN for some time. What a tease!

visually stunning? oh... I'd say 'Prospero's Books' which was shot in very early prototype HiDef cameras.

The majority of Prospero's Books was shot on 35mm film. It was only the P-i-P style insert images that were shot on video.

Regardless, it's a very visually arresting movie. I can't believe there isn't even a decent DVD edition of it available anywhere.

We need to have a R1 Blu-ray release of Dario Argento's Suspiria.

From Wikipedia:
Suspiria is noteworthy for several stylistic flourishes that have become Argento trademarks. The film was made with anamorphic lenses. The production design and cinematography emphasize vivid primary colors, particularly red, creating a deliberately unrealistic, nightmarish setting. This look was emphasized by the use of imbibition Technicolor prints. The imbibition process, used for The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind, is much more vivid in its color rendition than emulsion-based release prints, therefore enhancing the nightmarish quality of the film.

The film was the final feature film to be processed in Technicolor before the processing plant was closed.

^ I'd want it remastered (PQ wise) and all the extras that the deluxe special edition DVD has.

While I can easily understand that argument (as a lot of those earlier Fox titles have missing extras and inferior MPEG-2 encodes), this thread specifically asked for movies that haven't yet been available on BD, not for ones already available that you'd like to see re-released and improved....that's why the post by "bub" is confusing...

+1, I love that movie.

I'd be happy with Fight Club, Panic Room, Brick, Garden State, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, The Jacket, Thomas Crown Affair, Rounders and The Talented Mr. Ripley. It has to be rentals that are driving the releases. I can't believe that more people would buy Miss March than Fight Club.

I was ecstatic that Grumpy Old Men & Sideways came out on Blu. If you haven't heard the commentary with Giamatti & THC, it's great. It's on the regular DVD, too. And I'm getting Leon: The Professional on release day.

I do not think Spielberg had any influence over the CLOSE ENCOUNTERS release. If he had, I don't we'd have seen it yet. Columbia (Sony) pretty much has the right to do what they want with this title, one of the few (along with POLTERGEIST) that Speilberg cannot control. Spielberg, as much as I admire his work, is being a narcissistic jerk by not allowing more of his catalog to be available on Blu. He did this with DVD, too. He wants to wait until there is a certain "market saturation" of Blu-ray players. My take on this: market penetration would increase significantly if suddenly JAWS and E.T. and SCHINDLER'S LIST and JURASSIC PARK were to come out on Blu.

But apparently Speilberg believes his films are much too important to be thrown into the mix at this point. His films are important, and that is why they should be available right now, to add a kick to this new format which is really desperately needs.

The Blu-ray release of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" by Sony had Spielberg's personal blessing. At one point it became a talking point in the format war that Spielberg had allowed one of his movies on Blu-ray but would supposedly not allow Universal to release any of his movies on HD DVD.

I don't take it that way. I feel that Spielberg is waiting to see of the format will survive. IMO I think that he doesn't want to force the fans of his movies to buy them on a format that won't survive. Thus he's waiting until blu is being used by a majority of the population.

did you happen to see the most recent South Park episode: 'Dances with Smurfs'

;)

Are you sure you don't mean the recent Family Guy episode "Brian's Got a Brand New Bag"? Where the store is selling all the DVDs for only $1, and the clerk wants to give Peter a free copy of "What Dreams May Come" with his purchase of "Road House", but Peter says he'll kill him if it even touches his copy of "Road House"? And then the "What Dreams May Come" DVD is put in the front window along with a bunch of other titles no one else wants (Enemy Mine, Harlem Nights, Deconstructing Harry, Mad Dog And Glory) and begins singing a song.....

David Lean's big four:

The Bridge On The River Kwai
Lawrence Of Arabia
Dr. Zhivago
Ryan's Daughter

Really? Those are Lean's Big Four? I've always considered Lean's big four to be Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, Bridge on the River Kwai, and Lawrence of Arabia.

I don't take it that way. I feel that Spielberg is waiting to see of the format will survive. IMO I think that he doesn't want to force the fans of his movies to buy them on a format that won't survive. Thus he's waiting until blu is being used by a majority of the population.

Or he's simply waiting for there to me enough Blu-ray households to sell 5+ million copies of his big hits. At his level, it's more business... less worrying about the fans.

Maybe those are the big four that remain... as Brief Encounter (locked to Region B)and Great Expectations (region free) are out on Blu-ray in the UK.

Speaking strictly in terms of the quality of the films you may be right, but the thread does refer to "visually stunning" movies. I'd say that Zhivago and Daughter get the nod over Encounter and Expectations on that basis.

I can see that argument, but I'd say Brief Encounter and Great Expectations are every bit as visually stunning as Zhivago and Ryan's, just a different way.

When is A.I. Artificial Intelligence going to be on Blu-Ray? People have mixed feelings about this movie, but I thought it was very visual. It was supposed to be released this year in Europe, but nothing ever happened with that.

No date for it yet, but I can guarantee that once it does come out, there will either be a bunch of people complaining about it looking too grainy (if they do the transfer correctly), or a large group of people complaining about not enough grain and too much applied DNR (if they do the transfer wrong)....

"A.I." is on my Top 20 list of films I can't wait to get on BD.

Not high on my list, but I would love to see Tom Tykwer's "Heaven" and Gillian Armstrong's "Charlotte Gray" on Blu someday. Both have beautiful cinematography.

let's hope AI gets the same 4K remastered work that 'Miniority Report' is getting done.

'High Society' was shown on HDNet Movies awhile back and while the print still had the reel change indicators in a couple of spots, the transfer looked utterly fantastic!

as for films where select special effect shots were filmed in 65mm - I can think of two that utilized the higher resolution: 'Blade Runner' and 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' and I think, but don't quote me: 'Little Buddha'

visually stunning to the hilt - Ridley Scott's 'Legend' certainly fits the bill - where's that bluray release, I thought there was word that a bluray edition was imminent?
