They came close to one in 1987. They clinched the East on the final day of the regular season by beating the Jays (they were actually a game behind the Jays going into the final series and swept it).

Yeah-It was the asshat manager for Toronto that lost the series. He refused to use his closer in the middle game(said he was saving him for the last game-LOL. Hells Bells-save him for a spring training game-dumb ass!!!). I forgot who it was Henke or Eichhorn. Turns out-they didn't need a closer for the last game. I think Alexander beat Flanagan 1-0.
Red Dog
10-06-09, 03:33 PM
Yep - it was a classic pitching duel, but it was Tanana vs. Key.
It was Henke (Eichhorn was the primary setup guy). I vividly remember Doyle Alexander that year - they got him mid-season from Atlanta and he was on fire, going undefeated in about 10 starts over the last 6 weeks or so. Of course, Atlanta made out pretty well in that trade - they did get John Smoltz.

10-06-09, 03:43 PM
I think the Blue Jays are still saving Henke(no wonder they haven't won lately). You gotta go by the book even though it might prevent you from winning a championship.

Nathan in, top 8, 1 out. Runners on 1st and 2nd.

:hscratch: 3rd best hitting team in all of baseball. 5th best in runs.
But yeah, weak pitching. Losing their best by mid-season didn't help.
Theres 8 teams that make the playoffs. Twins are in the AL so thats a .25 runs more than any NL team on average. So they are probably 4th or 5th in runs scored in the AL, would be my guess.
stat check:
Twins are 3rd in batting with all 4 playoff teams in the top 4 in the AL. They are 5th in runs, which is 4th best of the 4 playoff teams.

Nice game by Detroit. I agree that it wasn't an epic collapse by them, they played consistently throughout the year, the Twins just picked it up. Still...1st place from May 10th until today has to hurt, especially with all the extracurricular crap the past 2 days with Miggy.

Happy to see the Twins win. This one is a crusher for either losing team. Twins facing second game 163 loss vs. Tigers having to live with relinquishing an almost season long stay at the top of the division.
Gotta say I will pull for the Twins against the Yanks but I have to think it will be like the White Sox last year - over in 4 with the AL East division winner on top.

Why do the TBS announcers keep repeating that idiotic Leyland quote:
"Especially this year, it is not a good year to not run the ball out"
Do they not know how stupid that is when you take a second to think about it? What year is a good year to not run things out?
It's not exactly profound, but in context he's talking about playing hard for fans whose city is struggling. It's a nice sentiment. He didn't just say, "Hey, this year, run hard for once."

Not sure what to say about the Tigers. Leyland is a good manager and they could do a lot worse.
That would be quite hard (to do worse). Yet another 2nd half swoon for the Tigers under Leyland. I know they won't fire him (God knows they should have last year AND the year before) so our only hope is that he quits like he has everywhere else.

So you're still calling that an average lineup?!
3rd best average in all of baseball, 5th most runs. Of course the few teams better than that are the other playoff teams.

Unbelievable game - most stressful "regular" season game that I can remember watching.
One hell of roller-coaster of emotions.
Fuck the Yankees.
God Bless the Minnesota Twins.

It's a crappy sentiment - if times are good, don't worry so much about running hard? It seems like more of a guilt trip to get rich players to run hard 4 times a game. Hey fans we know times are tough - that's why this year we are really going to try.... (and try not to blow a 0.26 on the breathalyzer before a key game), because we care....
When is it a good time not to especially try and play hard? Detroit's been suffering for decades - it just gets more publicity the last year or two. Where was that sentiment 2 years ago? 5 years ago?

Yep, this has to be one of the best comebacks of all time, right? First team ever to come from 3 down with 4 to play.
They won the games they had to win, but they got lucky in that it was a very weak schedule. Since August 20th, they played a grand total of FOUR games against teams with a positive run differential. But give them credit, they won those games.

Amazing game tonight -- one of the best games I've seen in a long while. This 'toilet' of a Dome just won't go away though. ;)

25% unemployment and people are buying tickets to watch you play. That's all he's saying. A guilt trip? Okay, but no more than any manager ever gives millionaire players. And on top of all of that, he probably made the comment in passing and the announcers latched onto it. It's not exactly a big enough deal to get upset about.

It is shitty though, that every sports team, college or pro, out of Michigan they try to make this huge deal about how it is so important to them. I mean, it's a high if your local team wins it all (not that I'd know), and provides you a distraction, but it's not lasting.

People latch onto sports in tough times, partially because of the distraction, so it's no surprise that some of those folks may have a sense of "duty" or something. Even if that is silly.
Again, it isn't some all-time great sports quote, but Leyland wasn't saying that he's never cared about players playing hard before. I mean, how much pregame talk is actually worthwhile, groundbreaking stuff? This was no different than any other feel-good cliche.

Well I feel bad for Detroit because even though that have a decent looking rookie QB I don't think the Lions are going to do much, and I think this is year the Red Wings start slipping. I guess that leaves the Pistons which I know jack about.

Maybe that had something to do with their deficit going into the stretch run...
Hell of a game. As a Minnesota sports fan, I'm strung out. We had the Twins-Tigers series last week, then the weekend drama of pulling even. Then we had Monday Night Football vs. the Packers. Now this. And the playoffs start TOMORROW? Against the YANKEES?
I need some antacid.

I had to work this evening, so I was only able to watch parts of the first 5 innings. The rest I had to listen to at work.
This game reminded me of why I fell in love with baseball in the first place. It really had everything that makes baseball stand out from the other major sports. The tension was ratcheted up every inning. From the 7th inning on, there was drama every half inning. It was like the two minute warning in football over and over again.
Those last 5 innings were like a boxing match. Back and forth, back and forth, the Tigers putting the Twins on the ropes, only to see the Twins slip out and land a quick jab. I texted my friend in the 12th, and said to him that it was time for the knockout blow, and sure enough Casilla came through and the Twins, battered and bruised, were the ones left standing.
But they didn't get out of it unscathed. This was a war tonight, and was really a microcosm of the entire season for these teams. Tigers start out in front, the Twins claw their way back, only to see the Tigers almost put it away. But in the end the Tigers make a huge blunder, and fail to take advantage of their opportunities to put it away.
Bottom line, it was the best baseball game since the Padres/Rockies game of '07.

It also helps pump more money into the community. Getting a World Series is big financial windfall for the city that gets it. From the hotel taxes to the added revenues to businesses around the stadium, to the extra work for stadium employees.
It isn't just a distraction, it delivers revenue.

Sure there is some but it's not going to save the city. They were doing the same thing with the Spartans in the final four (I'm talking the media here), and there was no financial windfall to follow save for some shirt sales if they had won. I'm just saying, if they want to pump up Detroit teams for being the saviors of a down and out city, then they are setting it up people for a let down. And the rhetoric has clearly been different for Michigan teams lately, which doesn't seem fair to their teams or their fans.

As a Cub fan who has had his hopes dashed again this year, I have to say that last night's Tigers v Twins game has completely revitalized my love of the game.
I had no allegiances either way, but that was an absolute blast to watch.
And clearly the Twins have their work cut out for them in NY...

I didn't expect them to make it, but this Pirates fan will be pulling for the Twins in this postseason. Hell - I may even try to go to game 3 this weekend if they're going to be THAT entertaining.

I shouldn't admit this, but I only watched about a third of the game. Being a Minnesota sports fan has taught me a lot of heartbreak, and watching the Twins get so close to the division title and lose, a second year in a row, would have been too much.
So I'd watch a bit, then pause it and go watch a movie or run an errand. When they fell behind 3-0 I almost decided to just walk away and only watch the DVR if they came back. But then I'd occasionally peek at the score online, or look at it streaming on my iPhone; see that they had come back, and watch a bit more.
The 9th thru 11th innings were too stressful to watch. I finally decided to grow a set and I watched the 12th inning, then backed up and watched the whole game.
Hard to fully explain, I'm sure I sound like an idiot. I'll save a copy of the full game and likely re-watch it a couple times over the years. But in the heat of the moment last night, it was too much. If I was there I would have been fine; but being at home with plenty of less stressful things to do (watch horror films for the challenge) made it easy to skip most of it live.

Hey man - how could you possibly give up on a team that did what the Twins did? Stick with them man. The victory is so much sweeter when you were there all along.
