Interesting goings on in Tallahassee. If the rumors are true, they're going to make a coaching change after this season without firing Bowden. Jimbo Fisher's getting a 5-year deal which will give him pretty much all the power, including recruiting and hiring and firing assistant coaches. Bowden will remain head coach in name only.

He's been a figurehead for a while now.

Every time I hear of Bowden I think of this Tim Wilson routine:

He's been a figurehead for a while now.

Actually, the problem is that he's had too much power. He gave assistant head coach positions to guys like Chuck Amato, who've, until now, had more power than Fisher did. The only thing that Fisher's been able to accomplish over the last couple of years is convincing Mickey Andrews to stay in 2008 (not because of any love for Andrews' defense, but because he was afraid that if Andrews left that Bowden would name Amato as D-coordinator, and Fisher knew that was a bad idea).

It's become clear over the last couple of years that Fisher is the only person at FSU who actually "gets it" (maybe because he's not part of the FSU 'old guard' as Bowden/Andrews/Amato are). This should do nothing but help the 'Noles.

So it was rumored for awhile that starting next year the Gator Bowl was changing to a Big10-ACC matchup. Instead, they are going to a Big10-SEC matchup. Yes, this will be the third Big10-SEC bowl. Yes, this will be the third Big10-SEC bowl in the state of Florida. Yes, this will be the third Big10-SEC bowl in the state of Florida that airs on New Year's Day. So get ready for all day Big Ten action in the Outback, Capitol One, Gator, and the Rose starting Jan 1, 2011. Jim Delaney says "suck it". Big Ten fever - catch it.

No surprise. If I ran a bowl, particularly one of the popular Florida ones, the Big Ten, Big XII, and SEC would be the only teams outside of a handful of other teams (ND, VT, WVU, maybe Boise/Utah/BYU) I'd want to invite.

The Florida/LSU game should be more fascinating if Tebow is out of the game.

twikoff
10-09-09, 05:12 PM
tebow is important to them.. but his backup has a ton of snaps, since tebow is typically out early.
and they still have the #1 defense in the country.. not to mention demps, james, moody, and rainey... when you have players like that, you just need someone that can get the ball in their hands

Daryl
10-09-09, 05:12 PM
Never would have thought a team ranked #4 in the country, playing at home at night (where they have been near unbeatable), would be a 8 or 9 point underdog to the #1 team with it's QB's health in question and not practicing

Red Dog
10-09-09, 05:20 PM
The irony is that win or lose, I still think Florida wins the national title (assuming Tebow returns).

Daryl
10-09-09, 05:58 PM
I agree. They have (rightly so) built up an incredible cache of "benfefit of the doubt" where no one will blink twice if they lose this game regardless of whether Tebow plays or not. They just need to win the SEC championship game.

Daryl
10-09-09, 06:00 PM
Oh, meant to post this yesterday, could any other coach in America get away with Bobby Bowden's epic "just like a woman" comment the other day? It was like "oh he didn't just say that, did he?!" followed by huge laughter.

Yes, the Big Ten has no shot vs the mighty SEC. The mighty SEC has that awesome 4-6 record vs the Big Ten in the Capital One and Outback bowls in the last 5 years.

Yep and they have a built-in 'out.' Either Tebow doesn't play or he played hurt. The pollsters won't slide them down much, particularly losing to a top-5 team in an environment LSU never loses in. The computers will treat it more harshly though since it doesn't take into injuries and history, which given the college fooball set-up, is correct. That won't be enough to overcome the humans though.

Yeah, just a little behind, had to pause for a bit for some dumb reason. heh.

Hopefully tonight's games will be a little more eventful. Not much in question today.

It's funny because I thought it was pretty good to watch despite the penalties since I so rarely see defense at that level played in college football these days. We're in a era where the offenses have moved/evolved several steps beyond the defenses. Gets a little frustrating at times.

Iowa beat Michigan. It's a big deal to us. The first time at Kinnick since 2003. They are also on a 10 win streak. The first time since 1923. It was also homecoming and getting fans on the field after the game was planned before the game started.
